I really like the music in this version, both NES and MSX versions of this game are jewels, But the Famicom port was king with the story cinematic, map screen between levels and small graphical changes like trees blowing in the wind and more.
I actually played this game all the way through despite playing the NES version a million times. This was due to the fact it changes a lot of things around like weapon drops let you choose which gun you get. The only major complaint I had was with the lack of scrolling where the game kept spawning enemies from the side of the screen you were near. Though the lack of scrolling in and of itself wasn't bad. It just felt like one of those NES games like Snow Bros. or Bubble Bobble where you go from room to room which was cool.
I never saw these graphics, colours or speed movement in my old MSX. And I couldn't imagine it was possible. This looks like more a NES game than a MSX one.
@@jendorei , and ditto for Contra, as the NES/FDS port of Contra came out a full year before the MSX version of the game. Honestly, it would not be that difficult to add in the extra levels, since the same sprites are used in those parts of the game as they are elsewhere in the game.

I do not consider this game to be the true Contra game...it is a decent port, certainly, but it honestly could have been handled better, and this port is also essentially the same thing that is also on the IBM PC from back in the day +Yu KiRo. Yes, it had a few good things, namely a life gauge, the ability to switch guns on the fly, the ability to keep said guns even AFTER you die in the game, a gun that could fire from the front AND rear, which should have appeared as a "D" power up in the NES/Famicom versions of the game, and a "V" if you wanted to up the ante and have a four way directional gun, AND more levels than any other version of Contra, but the enemy reactions in this port of the game were too slow, the turret guns were too lazily designed, the enemies, including the bosses, kind of are lazily designed, they lack the variety of their NES/Famicom counterparts, and it moved not unlike Super Mario Brothers Special for the NEC PC 98, which is to say, too damn slow to be any good (though, to its credit, NOT as badly as Haunted Castle for play on arcade systems, and its controls are also much better than that game). The music, while recognizable, honestly could have also benefitted from a bit more work.
Actually, the Famicom version of Contra (which wasn't a direct port like the NES one but rather a major enhancement) actually had a message that could be activated I believe with a button combo at the end which directly leads to the events of Super C.
Funny how the info says " Im amazed they dont have Final Fantasy on this console" First, it's not a console, it's a computer. Second, it does have Final Fantasy :D Both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest got ported to the MSX.
I actually didn't expect another incomplete version of the theme at 18:32. Even moreso as while it is at the same tempo as NES, it is also in the same key as arcade.
@ValisHD yeah its just...disturbing..a gun that shoot front and rear...so the guy is not getting killed by his own gun but can get hit by others bullets...nice >.> lol
Gosh, the imitations this console has compared to the nes, but nonetheless it still a pretty good version of Contra. Really like the ability to switch guns whenever and having a health bar.
Airsh Bornely The MSX's limitations are a bit of an odd beast -- the MSX1 was basically a Colecovision, the MSX2 (as pictured here) was like an NES with better sound but no hardware support for horizontal scrolling (though a lot of developers found creative ways to program around this), the MSX2+ was the same as the MSX2 but with horizontal scrolling support and a few other added features (thus making it technically superior to the NES in most regards), and then finally, the MSX turboR was an absolute beast that almost felt like a predecessor to the TurboGrafx-16. The longevity of the MSX platform in Japan made for a huge variety in its gaming library -- from "primitive" games to titles that could potentially fool people into thinking they're 16-bit (look up footage of Space Manbow sometime!). It all depends on when the game you're playing was made, and how ambitious the developers were with the hardware.
Ramiro1992 (Mr_X) Not in the West, but it was HUGE in Japan. It was easily the Famicom's biggest competitor, blowing away the Sega Master System and pretty much everything else. That's why it survived in the marketplace over there for like, 12-13 years, and got so many upgrades and expansions during that time -- because people just kept buying it!
@Sholmesher Or play the best version on the Amstrad CPC and preferably on a 14" CRT TV for smoother graphics. The CPC had almost 16-bit machine graphics on this game, which was amazing for the time; loads of colour and detail etc.

It's completely LAUGHABLE how the MSX hardware can provide superior background graphics but can't handle scrolling due to a weak processor that is inferior to the ones found in the NES and Famicom.
