Can I say that it is amazing to see how you have grown as a reviewer. You have become one of the key people I use to decide whether I am going to use X pounds to go see a film in the cinema or not. :)
I don't think the movie gets too slow, at all. The crew has to regroup and figure out their plan. I loved every second of this movie and I think it's my favorite movie of the year. 9/10 I will see this a second time in theaters and may even buy the DVD. Inglorious Basterds meets Reanimator, or Saving Private Ryan meets Universal Soldier.
Man, I love your reviews, you always put so much thought and effort in them, I really respect that. You got me curious about this movie, this is the first time I hear about it, but it seems right up my alley. And it has Kurt Russell's son?? I didn't know he was an actor too... If he's half as talented as his dad, I already hope I will see him in more stuff, even before seeing this movie :D
Same actor will be the lead in the pet semetary remake coming up. Personally I'm excited for that one. Warning though, don't watch the second trailer. Apparently they give away a lot more than the first.
Film Brain You're much too modest, Mathew! You always give a thoughtful introspective about your feelings of the current movie/ director, including how you've reached your conclusion. I personally appreciate this approach, as opposed to the usual TH-camr who screams "I hate this movie!" You are one of the few that I've enjoyed from Channel Awesome days, and I love to see you going strong!
Overlord reminds me of a 60s screenplay that was filmed today. Like it was going to be a hammer horror movie but it got scrapped, and Abrams just found it in an old file cabinet and went "yes"
Just come back from watching it. I enjoyed the hell out of it and didn't mind the lull in the middle as I think it'd have been a bit much if it didn't slow down for a while. As for the characters... I thought they were handled just well enough to make me like them enough to want to see them survive without bogging down the films pace. Totally agree about Russell's performance.
I went into this not knowing it was crossover, I thought I no please not zombies, but the characters were so convincing it worked and took us on won hell of a ride. Nice one JJ & nice review !
I saw an advanced screening of this at my school on Monday night (and I even got to briefly review it on Double Toasted). Really dug it. I do agree that the characters aren’t written that great and it does take a little while to get to the horror stuff, but it didn’t bother me that much because the actors (especially Russell) were able to make up for the lack of development and I was still engaged before the horror stuff came along.
Nitpicking. The minute I saw the main African American paratrooper, I knew this movie was in an alternate reality, as I don't think there were any African-American paratroopers on D-Day. African-Americans were segregated to fighter pilots in the Tuskegee Airmen as well as various Artillery battalions, as well as lots of menial support duties. Later on, there were African American infantry battalions, but these were in different theaters of the war.
It seemed strange to me at first that they had an intergrated American unit in WW2, but then i remembered its a Nazi zombie flick, was I really expecting Band of Brothers levels of historical accuracy here?
There were in fact 'African American' participants in the D Day landing and specifically as paratroopers. I know there were not many in context of the overall number of allied participants, but they were there.
Upon additional research, there were African American Units involved in the D-Day invasion, but no paratrooper units. There was an African American paratrooper unit, the 555th. in training then, and it saw action later in the war, particularly in the Battle of the Bulge, but not on D-Day.
I’d like to thank you for getting my name right in the credits, it was misspelled for awhile, and I wasn’t going to say anything because it’s not important, but I was super excited to see that you got it perfect this time 😊 Bless you for that, Flemish names are not easy.
Thanks for another great review. I don't quite get the story. It sounds like the Germans made no effort to evacuate the lab or cover up their misdeeds when they were invaded, which is what they did everywhere else. True, the exact location of Overlord was a surprise, but even to build a major facility in Normandy seems incredibly foolish. But I guess the film makers wanted a big air scene, no matter what..
Come on, Abrams (The Star Trek Destroyer) is unable to make serious movies, and this one isn't serious either. Or should we all learn how to talk seriously about utter nonsense ? Today's movies are a disease.
This just feels like the part in Captain America: The First Avenger where he attacks the base and finds the Nazi's have been operating on Bucky stretched out to a film.
Small nitpick, but you mention Wyatt Russell is Kurt Russell's son and has his father's charisma. True, but his mom, Goldie Hawn, has amazing charisma as well. He probably got a double dose of it!
Oh, I loved that the main villain was doing evil for evils sake. Don't get me wrong. It is always fine to have someone like Thanos or Killmonger who actually have an understandable point to their villainy. But in some cases, and especially in movies like this, you just love it when the villain is simply an evil son of a bitch. No sad backstory, no honorable motivation just a very bad person who loves to do wrong.
Oh yeah, I thought Pilou Asbaek was pretty much spot-on; most of my comments are with regard to the doctor character, who is built up as a prominent character and then... isn't.
This is like the 3rd review complaining about the "depth of the characters and Nazi motives. WHAT MORE DO YOU NEED?! The motive is Nazi's want to live longer and be stronger. Do you really need another 10-15 minutes knowing each character's backstory to know what they're thinking? No. I ask again, what more do you REALLY need to know?
I did think its rather unusual for this kind of movie to have a doctor character that is barely one. That's where a lot of that came from, and the fact that the soldiers were a bit one-note.
So basically a really small scale war operation with barely any zombies and it takes place in just 2 locations... Yeah this was not worth a cinema release, more like something that should have gone direct to DVD
I was very impressed with this one. Here's where you can watch my own review. th-cam.com/video/4xOlGfCZLPY/w-d-xo.html There's also a tribute to Stan Lee about nine and a half minutes in.

I appreciate that you give us a history of the director's work going into a review of the current movie, it gives a good perspective
Well, in this case I got a little lucky, because I looked him up and realized I had actually rented his previous film, haha.

love all the great reviews

I've been up for so long. I need sleep but I appreciate and love your reviews too much to wait.

Is this the best videogame movie? (Wolfenstein hinthint)

I agree!! this was a fun one. reminded me of Dog Soldiers, same kind of thing. Soldiers vs monsters, werewolves in the other movie. Loved it!!

Thank you for the extra information. It helps to adjust where I had the wrong information regarding D Day and African American paratroopers.
Great review!

Yeah, my sincerest apologies for that, I think I did fix it a few episodes back quietly.

I might check this out, but I have a feeling I would enjoy the anime by the same name more.
Nazi Mutants: The Movie
Its barely a zombie movie.
Huh, guess I dun goofed up...
...so shit?
Technically they're more Mutants than Zombies.
+Rem Natsuki That makes sense.
Ooh cool
Wyatt Russell really was fantastic in this movie.
Great Rview!
So it's *Dead Snow* meets *Frankenstein's Army* ?
Stripped to its bare bones, this the same plot as "Frankenstein's Army" (2013), which is a much more batshit crazy, fun as hell movie!
How could you see a movie from 2103? Are you from the future?
Yeah but Frankenstein's Army ripped off Overlord. It had long enough to study it.
The Misunderstood Assassin Yes I am. President Baron Trump III sends his regards!
@@BlastAction Is Baron Trump III a competent president? That would make him automatically better than his great-grandfather.
Small nitpick, but you mention Wyatt Russell is Kurt Russell's son and has his father's charisma. True, but his mom, Goldie Hawn, has amazing charisma as well. He probably got a double dose of it!
The original universal soldiers !over lord

Not a JJ fan after his destruction of Trek.
What the flip dude calm your pickle with the facial expression on that thumbnail.
