    I've been a huge fan of Marais ever since my cello teacher introduced me to the soundtrack of Tous les matins du monde, with Jordi Savall. Thank you so much for this extraordinary Christmas present, it is one of the best that I've ever received. Craig and you play beautifully together.

      I too was completely gob-smacked by "Tous les Matins du Monde" and instantly became a fan of Savall and Early music. And now I'm developing a weird obsession with the theorbo after watching a number of YTube vids!

    To think that someone wrote all this down and we can enjoy and understand this many centuries later. This wasn't possible only a few decades ago. Science fiction come true. What have we forgotten and lost for ever if not for the efforts of musicologists and players.And maybe it can be lost again if you think of it... It speaks of a need and emptiness that is filled by the rediscovery of the music of this era. The dim lighting and warm sounds make this an unforgettable experience.

    • @timothy4664
      @timothy4664 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@vitors.7759 Looks like Brandon may have understood but that doesn't surprise me.
      It is from a 1991 French film named Tous Les Matins Du Monde. The movie is about a French composer by the name Monsieur Jean De Sainte-Colombe told through the memories of an old Marin Marais. St Colombe was a celebrated composer during his time and a viola de gamba master. The movie is about his grief and depression following the death of his wife as he must raise 2 daughters while suffering. Marais shows up wanting to learn from the master. He is undisciplined, and immature in youth. Sainte-Colombe accepts him as a student (to the surprise of his oldest daughter) and tries to teach him.
      The scene i referenced had Sainte-Colombe smash Marais' viol against the wall because although Marais can play the instrument, he doesn't the music. He doesn't understand the emotions, feelings and emotive expression behind the art.
      As an aside, I remember speaking with my lute instructor in college and we spoke of that movie. It came out about 6 years before. He mentioned how that scene resonated with him as a teacher because though some students have talent physically, they may not have the mature sensibility and emotional intelligence required to fully realize a work. I didn't understand that until I took my own students later.
      I never destroyed an instrument but honestly at times..... lol.

      @vitors.7759 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oh! Nice! Yeah, I sometimes share that feeling about smashing a viola on a wall hehe. Even though I'm an English teacher, sometimes the students are pretty tough to handle...

    The Viola de Gamba has the same sound profile as the Hurdy Gurdy but without a drone. I wonder if it has to do with the strings used and the material of the bow.

    Love this theorbo/gamba duet! But I'm puzzled by how the longest strings of theorbo are tuned, with tuning pegs on a neck much longer than any human can reach!? Does it take two people: one person adjusts the tuning pegs while another person plucks the strings to check the tuning? Also, how does one travel a distance with a theorbo? If you have to travel, say from NY to Boston by train or plane, does the theorbo have a 6-ft. long case?
