I was like 5 years old when I first played Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the game almost ended for me at chapter two. Them catacombs scared the living crap out of me. I remember playing that village level over and over again until finally manned up and jumped down that hole. And after I finally emerged from the crypts I had to fight the boss. Holy shit that was intense for little me.
Same here. I was like 10 when I played this and catacombs scared me so much I didnt touch the computer for a week, I swear. Then I got over it and catacombs and crypt missions quickly became my favourite part of the game.
Gotta love that moment when you finished a great mod to a game, only to realize later that the mod just have a huge overhaul update right after you finished it. 10/10, great timing.
My Uncle got me into this and Half Life 1 as a kid, had him beat the catacomb level for my first run but for whatever reason never got spooked by the super soldiers and later use of the undead.

with the retrostein mod and the axis language patch (which makes the germans speak german in gameplay) its easily my favorite wolfenstein game, raven software were gods
the hardest difficulty only caps your max HP in the mod, the original only makes the healing items heal you less from what I remembered and noticed, since enemies didn't hit harder, there weren't more of them etc
I just love the drake and Josh bit. Especially as a german. 😂 Return to Castle wolfenstein will always stay in my memory as the game that scared the shit out of the 10 year old me. 👌🏼

This was technically the first real PC game I ever played. I didn't discover it until a year or 2 after it's release. My cousin had the OG Xbox version, which we hardly played thanks to Halo 2. But around that time, I saw my moms friend playing RTCW on her crappy desktop computer, and something about seeing the game run on that kind of hardware REALLY made me more interested in it and in PC gaming in general. Shortly after my cousin and I played the OG Xbox version after realizing what a gem the game actually was.
