La Paz to Los Cabos Road Trip

  • Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo are about 2.5 hours from La Paz. Together they comprise "Los Cabos." They have the best airport and even a Costco. So we decided to take a day to make the trek and check it out.
    On our agenda:
    2:19 Farm Tour at Flora Farms
    6:54 Stop off at a beach (East Cape Beach I think)
    7:46 Downtown Historic San Jose del Cabo
    9:06 Tienda 17
    In December, there's really not sufficient daylight to make this into a good day trip. But in the spring, fall or summer it could be a good trip. Our next trip will involve an overnight stay to experience more time in Los Cabos.
    What did we miss? What's so great about Los Cabos? Tell me in the comments below.
    Also, what do you think about the term GenMex?

    We have always enjoyed San Jose del Cabo because of its local culture and residents. The pandemic really did a job on the locally owned shops there. They have closed, and as you said, the trinket and jewelry stores have moved in. It’s sad. We are hoping things turn around post-pandemic and the locals and their shops are able to return.

      Thanks Heidi. There are still some locally owned shops, but they cater to tourists.
      But I walked away from the tourist area and found more shops for locals (and the mercado.)
      I’ve been surprised to see all the new businesses opening during the pandemic in La Paz.

    Just watched you vidio of traveling to Cabo & San Jose Del Cabo through Todos Santos. We did that last week to check out Vidanta in S.J.C. which we belong to. My info. is that if you like carnitas tacos, there are two roadside restaurants in Pezcadero on the left, heading South,
    that serve the best I've eaten anywhere. We'll have to check out the Farm next time. Thanks for the vidio.

      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Joe. Vidanta looks posh! A little nicer than the hotel we stayed in this week (great location in San Jose del Cabo but rock solid beds and crumbling concrete...) I'll be sure to check on the taco places. This time we stopped for sweets at the French Bakery in Pescadero... next time tacos!

    Cabo San Lucas is always going to be popular with tourists because you don't need to ever exchange your money (if you're coming in with Murican money) and you never have to try to communicate in Spanish. There is a lot of housing up in the hills/mountains above town that really is spectacular and is definitely worth driving up into those areas (if you can get past security). San Jose really has some amazing restaurants and not just the expensive stuff and it would be awesome to live there if you fly a lot. Those two cities are much more exposed to hurricanes than La Paz is, that should be mentioned. If money were no object, I still like Todos Santos the best but real estate is crazy there. It's all good, though, really. All these towns have some great aspects to them.

      All true. We were there yesterday to pick up friends at the airport and spent the night. Prices in dollars and everyone speaks English. And still lots of hurricane damage from this summer. Glad to be in La Paz (especially with my palapa roof) when it comes to hurricane season.

    I’d like to visit both San Jose del Cabo and lapaz to explore for pretirement but Huatulco is top of my list. Have you taken a ferry over to the mainland? Interested in some of the towns on that side.

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We haven't taken the ferry over. I'm hoping to fly to Guadalajara soon to make some videos there. I'd not heard of Huatulco before - we really didn't do our homework before deciding on La Paz - we jumped right in.

      @@AlmostRetiredinMexico well you jumped into a beautiful place! Probably less humid too.

    I like SJD but prefer La Paz for the more real vibe. Sometime, check out Pescadito Break restaurant near Zippers at the Costa Azul exit. It is, probably, our favorite place. Oh, and Memo’s for tacos, the BEST!

      Thanks for the tip on Pescadito Break. I just added to my "want to do" list on Google Maps. Next time I'm out that way... It looks very nice from the online photos!

      Great question. Shore breaks and rip currents are common and make for dangerous swimming

    gracias! :) You seem to prefer the "authentic Mexico" rather than the tourist trap areas... Nothing wrong with that in my opinion!! It's like when I went to Hawaii so many times down in the Waikiki beach area... One or two streets back is DUKE street that has people chasing you down to sell items from China... Sometimes Tourist towns in Mexico are the same way! I do love how Mexico has vendors but where I stay you have to chase them down. :)

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Have you ever been to the Mexican pavilion at Disney World? Cabo feels just like that. In La Paz, vendors don't approach anyone. I love Waikiki and Duke's lane is all the vendors from the old International Marketplace. I feel like Cabo vendors are even more aggressive than Duke street.

    I will be flying into LaPaz and staying for 2 days and then I will be driving from lapaz to Cabo. I have never rented a car in Mexico before. Do you have any tips? Do I need pesos to pay for gas?

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As to car rentals, beware of insurance requirements. Maybe ask in advance by phone so you have no surprises. Mexico requires insurance (and your credit card insurance doesn’t work down here.) some rental places include it, but most don’t.
      You can pay for gas with a credit card.
      But in La Paz you will need pesos for most places outside the most touristy places. Some restaurants can charge your meal, but tip must be pesos.
      Have fun!
      The road between Cabo (thru Todos Santos) and La Paz is great. Just don’t drive at night!

    How long have you lived in La Paz please? What is best gym in la Paz please?

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico

      I've lived here 4 winters. There are many many gyms in La Paz. Most are smaller gyms, but there is a Family Fitness where a few friends of mine go. It seems to be like a 24 hour fitness or other large US chain: maps.app.goo.gl/Ec6ax3bPHXsXxEAq7

    Looking forward totodos santos s trip !!!!..have friends there and hoping its cheaper than cabo ...could u check for monthly rentals availability in winter ,,as i cant find many at all..???

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be cheaper than Cabo, but more expensive than La Paz. Also try Pescadero, which is down the highway and much more local. I suggest Facebook Marketplace. That works best in La Paz - not sure about Todos Santos.

    What's the coolest weather in LA Paz

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It gets down into the mid 50s at night in December / January. But usually 70+ during the day

      Thanks a lot for the temperature it's make a lot of different I am always hot person, what do you think about P V and la paz witch is cooler , I am coming for sure but I would like to know where to stop.

    • @AlmostRetiredinMexico
      @AlmostRetiredinMexico  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd suggest adding Guadalajara / Lake Chapala to your list. Much cooler there during the summer. In the summer, La Paz has high temps but lower humidity. PV has temps in the 80's or 90's, but high humidity.
