This was very fascinating. I am looking to breed snakes. Everyone has Ball Pythons. I have thought about the Blood Pythons with their gorgeous colors and I love the Palmetto Corns. I also love the African House Snakes. This is very helpful. I have chickens and have raised quail before too just never to feed snakes and not for a commercial level. I would like to eventually get ASFs.
Really nice break down by the numbers. Good presentation of the kinds of considerations anyone who wants to be a breeder should be looking at. We did a similar analysis here, which led to our ASF setup. Two additional thoughts for you and your viewers which you didn't cover, for good reasons, probably time mostly, and because these two are harder to quantify in numbers. First, knowing the quality of the feeder and food bio-security. When you buy f/t or live from "some place," you don't know or control the quality of the feeder. What did they get fed? How long has it been frozen? How healthy is the rodent colony? If you are getting live feeders, are they bringing mites or other problems into your collection? Are your snakes turning down the rodents because they smell wrong, were any chemicals used, were the rodents ethically euthanized, etc? I have found that our animals do better, eat more willingly, and just seem healthier on our home bred asf feeders. And no, we generally don't have problems getting them to switch between asf and rat or f/t and live. Btw, asf are great for switching a dedicated mouser.😁 Second, once you have really nailed down breeding rodents, it is relatively easy to scale up. Now, that seems to be a simple add, "great, as I have more snakes, I can just scale up the food production!" Yes, and you could stop there. But, more than that. If you get connected into your local scene, you can work on becoming known as the "go to" for extra feeders. And from there, it is not too hard to build up a dedicated weekly buyer list for rodents, which won't even need shipping, just meet once a week or month and hand over the bags of f/t that were ordered. So, as an additional part of your business, you can be selling rodents. So, since the savings for you feeding your own collection pays for the rodents in the first place, the additional income becomes pure profit, which can be scaled up at your speed and comfort level. There are several yt breeders, and I have spoken personally with many others, who admit that the rodent/insect sales carry their business, or at least until they break out into the higher tiers of being reptile breeders. When I switched to live didn’t have any waste but the stores never had the right size, out of stock or bad quality feeders . Just made sense to breed my own once I figured out a good process to cleaning I can get it done in a hour with the help of a shop vac.

I wish that I knew that breeding ball pythons was 95% breeding fucking rodents and 5% taking care of the actual snakes. I spend SO MUCH TIME cleaning rodent racks. I need to start selling some snake so I can afford to buy my rodents. It is nice knowing that I have super healthy nutritious rodents tho. Everything said and done it’s definitely worth every penny and every minute spent.

And when I want to slow down breeding I take half of the breeder males and get rid of them then throw in a hopper male with the females and he grows up to be the new stud when I wanna pick back up plus I cycle the stock often.
Great analysis. It's all about freedom and flexibility. Over-production can be a nice side-hustle, but can also be challenging because the rats grow so quickly and soon become too big for young ball pythons. It's nice to have a go-to breeder of larger snakes that will always take over-sized rodents and retired breeders. We don't care for gassing and freezing. It's also fun to combine different morphs of the rats to create variation in color and pattern. We made a nice cut sheet plan for a $200 home-made rat rack, free for anyone interested.

In my 1st year breeding rats, mice and hamstes i was able to not buy anything from the pet stores for 4+months! (I fed my babies to my own snakes for that long) i saved SO MUCH $$$!!!❤❤❤
Started at 30 snake's for the convenience of having food on deck whenever.... I used all the rats that didn't get eaten to start my breeding and built all the racks myself so start up was not to bad.
I started breeding when rodent pro wanted $400 to feed my 20 snakes for 2 months. Fast forward 3 years and now I have 50 ish snakes. I also have 20k in my rat building. Expenses are $611 on food every 2 months and $234 on bedding every 3.5 months. I have 180 breeding females and 30 males. I always sell enough to cover cost and more. My rats are the foundation of my business. So I would tell everyone not to raise their own and buy from me. Lol
Asfs are VERY GOOD FOR GETTING YOU A LOT OF RATS FAST 15+ PUPS PER LITTLER! THATS CRAZY NUMBERS IN 1 YEAR! Most People that Like reptiles are going to be excited about the combos that you breed. However, there are always karens out there that think they know better than you do. Curious if its a normal thing or few and far in between.
Hey there! We haven’t had many negative reactions so far. The occasional negative reaction is usually from someone who isn’t part of the hobby and doesn’t understand why certain animals cost so much or something like that. Overall, it has been really positive so far!
Are you feeding all 70+ weekly? If not your numbers are off. I produce a couple 1,000 rats and asf weekly to feed over 100 ball pythons, keep up with sales, and have future breeders. Hit me up if you ever have any questions.

I spend about an hour a week cleaning the rats and never have to buy rats. You have to make sure you hold back females to constantly replenish your breeders as their production slows.

Completely agree, breeding can be done fairly inexpensively and the freedom of not having to relive on someone else to feed you snakes is so valuable!
