So many memories. Rest in power, Jim, Dannie and Punky. They opened my young, budding punk rock mind to music and navigating life issues I was dealing with in the late 70s/early 80s. Wax Trax! was a shelter from storms of intolerance and ridicule for being a Black girl from the South side who loved punk rock. Whenever I got off the Fullerton EL, walked down to Lincoln and turned left...I knew everything was going to be ok. Thank you for sharing this xox
This Polish-Persian punk from the sw side hears ya. Oh, the exhilarating feeling of sneaking up to the north side and turning up Lincoln into another world! I used to like cutting through the weird alley behind Woolworths.
Wow, I was 12 when I first walked into WT and was forever changed. That entire neighborhood so cool Belmont/Sheffield/Halsted. Shopping at the Alley, 99th flr, eating burgers at Muskies, and dancing all night at Medusa’s. Ohh my glorious misspent youth! Lol
HAHA! Muskie's. A free cockroach in every burger. I remember all those places and Mamacita's. They served these huge burritos and an endless bowl of these really greasy nacho chips. So good.
Used to go there with friends, we'd travel from the far south suburbs of Park Forest. Absolutely the best place to find alternative music, imports, and other cool stuff.
Thank you for recording this and for sharing it here. "Why is this music not played on the radio"--I can answer. Because the band was Severed Heads and I doubt a radio station would announce that back in that era. The last two shots also Chicago's underground music history: Limelight and NEO, both of which featured music from Wax Trax. I was a Neo regular from '94ish to '02. Both of these clubs were like Mecca for rivetheads (industrial music fans), goths, and all other types of wonderful weirdos.
I feel so many connections to this video -- much of my early 20s were spent here and at Neo, I worked security at the Limelight, AND graduated from Northwestern in 87.
WAUW. A dream shop to me. Being from Copenhagen, where there were only 1 small shop, Gry Records, we use to tour Amsterdam and Brussels in search of these rare 12" records. I or we, would have come to Chicago for this shop only😂...if only I knew then.
The closest thing Portland Oregon had to Wax Trax was a record store called O Zone’s. Every record put out by WT as well as local artists like TV:616, Big Daddy Meat Straw, and Napalm Anything was sold there. Then it shut down.
This is Wax Trax! Record Store in Chicago... What year was this great footage filmed? By chance, do you possibly have any video footage of Wax Trax Record Store in Denver / Boulder Colorado? The Wax Trax! Documentary is killer! Now someone needs to shed some light and create a new documentary on the lesser known Wax Trax Record Store in Denver, Colorado to accompany the excellent "Rocky Mountain Low" 1976-1979 Denver / Boulder punk rock / power pop / new wave scene 2xLP / CD compilation that was released about 12 years ago circa 2009 and reissued in 2015. The couple who originally created Wax Trax Record Store (first known as "Wax Tracks") in Denver, Colorado After 3 years in late 1970's sold the record store to 2 new equally cool gentlemen and both moved to Chicago and formed Wax Trax! Record Store and Wax Trax! Record Label. In 1981, the Wax Trax Denver duo created the first indie record label in Colorado known as Local Anesthetic Records that released records by bands in the punk rock / hardcore / art punk / goth genres.

Crow's Nest in Joliet(outside Chicago) was great source for music back then as well!
A whole section for Snowy Red records. I'm in love.

It’s strange to think mainstream music nowadays is probably even worse
