Here in Sweden we have 90% of employees in collective bargaining. That's the sort of number that the UK should be aiming for, but won't. It's too far down the Reaganite plughole.

This stance was in line with that of his RMT union which encouraged its membership to vote for Brexit, providing several reasons including protection of workers rights. He stood by his support for Brexit in 2022, and later stated that he had done so in order to renationalise the railways, which he believed was not possible within the EU.

Fortunately in the private sector unions have much less power than in the public sector and quasi public sector. Lynch and co would not be able to bully their way to grossly inflated pay which either taxpayers or passengers have to pay for. When the unions ruled Britain between 1945 and 1979 we had the slowest growth in the western world, close to the highest inflation, and in every cycle unemployment and inflation were higher at the peak than in the one before, except that inflation in 79 didn't quite reach the 75 peak of 26%. That had to change.

We could borrow money, but no lender is going to give Britain money to help with radical changes in wealth distribution.
You need to walk before you can run.
At the next election, change should be expected and demanded, but for this term, undoing 14 years of austerity and all the other bs the tories pulled is more than enough.

In the 70’s they did prevent a lot of investment in this country (but were these potential investors just looking to shaft the British worker?). Now after 25 years in the NHS we can’t recruit any staff other than from poorer overseas countries. This shows that nobody in this country wants to do this work for the pay offered. Just remember that between 1945 and 1979 the UK had the slowest growth in the advanced world. After 1979, at least until covid, UK growth was faster than western Europe and I think than Japan. It also had close to the highest "incremental capital output ratio", that is to say more had to be invested to get the same extra production out than in any other advanced economy. That may partly have been down to antiquated management, but many of Britain's economic problems receded once Thatcher controlled the unions. It was a shame that it was as costly as it was, in terms of jobs, and better monetary policy such as we have had since 1993 [inflation targeting] and 1997 [central bank independence] would certainly have helped. But it was a cost that had to be endured. It would be a great shame to revert to the 1970s, when some unions could and did hold the economy to ransom, growth was the slowest in the western world, inflation close to the highest, and in every cycle inflation and unemployment were higher than in the cycle before.
Jim Callaghan knew it was unsustainable and told the Labour party so, but it took the more brutal Mrs T to actually do it.

Mick as ever speaking for his members.
When the UK workers hold the same rights to pay, terms & conditions as those who serve the establishment, chief execs, members of parliament, etc, then we will all feel we are in it together.
ASDA brought in like P&O fire & rehire with Contract 6. GMB did nothing for those mainly female workers because of there gender. Surely that in itself should be a reason to give some representatives the elbow for those that won't pally up with CEOs but fight for those same workers.

This man speaks absolute utter sense. This country needs its unions back, they are the ones that care about the people and their welfare and they are the majority in this country. Fairness has to be seen to be fair. We have gone back to the dark ages as far as employment for us ordinary bods, they are who we should be thanking for any of the benefits we get. I’m 69 and if am certain that my kids won’t get a state pension, the NHS will be long gone, not surprising when the folk at the top are selling it off bit by bit for their own financial benefit, shame on them, they have ruined our NHS and people will die that would have survived if an effective NHS was still in place, and whatever he says Starmer is definitely not on the side of the working class.

Thatcher and Blair made Unionism a Dirty word.
When I was a Unison Rep at the Hospital I worked in , nobody wanted to join.
As soon as they needed help , Then they would come to me.....
They would pay one year's fees for me to help them, and then close their membership....
