Putting in an ls2 engine into the brz is completely genius! He pretty much increased the power to weight ratio 200% and by only adding on an extra 200 lbs, the car is still significantly lighter than an ordinary corvette .
Love it and now I'm rethinking the FA20 build with forced induction and instead prefer to go with and LS. I was going to spend around $25k on making a reliable 500hp with the FA20 but now I've got to go back to the drawing board.
Jeremy Zavitz 25K would certainly include forged internals, plenty of small 4 cylinder engines make 500hp reliably, it's just expensive to do so and much easier with a higher displacement motor.
this is one of the amazing things i've seen in a while...nicely done. and i like that the guy left the corvette engine covers on...quite often I see people putting a custom cover on.
You know what, at first I was like "Fuck this guy. Swapping a freaken LS engine into an import." Then I realized, it's not my car. It's his. It's HIS preference, HIS experience, and in the end, HIS money. So, I learned to respect the fact that he didn't have to upload this for us to watch; Would I do it to my BRZ? Probably not, haha. But it's cool to witness nonetheless.
Also, the BRZ is 2700lb on the ground, the LS engine is extremely light for it's power output. Don't matter where it is from, but high power and light weight will always win!
Well, said. I still can't stand the 2jz engine in the mustang body but I understand that it is probably faster and they can do what they want with their car.
Even still, an average combined rating of 19-22, and up to 30mpg on the highway is truly exceptional for such a car.. Hell, my old Toyota MR2 Turbo returned similar MPG numbers, and that was a 4 banger!! Of coarse, it was boosted up a bit : )
The old LS1 cars (with 350hp) did it all the time. Since they upped the displacement the rating is a bit lower, but people still achieve high numbers. A friend of mine had a ~400hp LS1 RX7 that consistently got 32mph on the highway. Its all about gearing...something that Honda and Mazda never figured out with their 4cyl sports cars getting horrible gas mileage.
There is a shop here in phoenix az that will do the swap and still make it street legal for everyday driver. Yes my 2016 frs is getting a lt1 come January. I'll post picks and track videos. When its done. I bet that car screams tickets 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Rims: enkei raijin Built by Weapons Grade performance in Connecticut They do offer a conversion kit on their site. Minus the engine and tranny. $3000 for basic, $9000 for full kit. Engine swap said to add 60 or 80 pounds over stock. Engine is a fully rebuilt LS2 engine from a Pontiac GTO. They are selling this prototype for ~$55k
for all of you saying it's adding 100+ pounds.. no it only adds around 60 pounds according to the guy that does the swaps. all the cornering ability is still the, but now it gets out of the corners much quicker;)
If I remember the article correctly, 9K for the swap kit. A decent pull-out with a harness and brain runs for 2K, and count on another 1-3K for a rebuild if you want one. That's on top of the 25K for the car itself.
Cool engine swap, but personally I am not a big fan of swaps especially when it is a bit unbalanced like this. The engine for me is the heart of a vehicle, it gives the personality and has much to do with the balance of the car. The LS is so much more suited for a FMR layout. The FA20 in the GT86/BRZ was specifically designed to fit a FR layout with a mid-engine feel due to how low that thing sits in the bay so I assume considering the placement and weight of the LS the car probably loses much of its neutral balance. Though I am still impressed by how cleanly the LS sits in there. When the GT86/BRZ first came out I was skeptical about how much room you would actually have to work with but it seems pretty straightforward swapping in a LS or 2JZ.
You seem to know what you are talking about considering I had to Google just about every acronym you used. I'm 17, and I am fairly interested in cars. I have a Mercedes 600 sel with a 400 sel engine in it as a daily driver. I want to get into modifying cars, but I don't know where to start. I have the budget of a 17 year old, so I know the advice you could give me is limited. I want to save up money and eventually buy something inexpensive to repair (thus not to old), sporty (thus 200+ hp), and easy to modify (thus not too much electrical stuff). Is there somewhere I could learn to work with cars as a hobby without making it a full-time job? is there a car you would recommend investing 5k into? I considered the MR2, but I don't know. How much would modifying a car to a medium extent set me back?
lucidarik Biggest help by far = online car forums. Find a car you like or are interested in buying/modding and join a corresponding forum. For example, many BRZ/GT86/FR-S enthusiasts are registered on www.ft86club.com where everything is discussed like instructions on installing specific parts or common known issues and how to fix them. As far as choosing a car, it really is up to you especially if you are going to be heavily modifying it. The Mercedes may be tough to keep as used German cars are typically expensive to work on and parts can be difficult to get but if you really like the car then go for it, just research online to see how much mods will cost you. The MR2 is a very popular car to mod and there are dozens of forums online for all three generations of it. However, just be warned, finding a nice used stock MR2, whatever generation, can actually be a little expensive now.. Used stock Japanese coupes have really gone up in value in the past decade, a stock Mark IV Supra for example is almost unattainable. As far as how much it can cost, in my experience if you are going to be doing forced induction, like installing a turbocharger, then you will need at least $10,000 in mods alone because if you are going to be properly modding a car you have to upgrade everything like the brakes/suspension/tires/etc.. Some people just slap on a turbo and get a cheap tune which is cool I guess but that makes the car pretty unbalanced. With $5,000 USD it will be tough to find a nice stock sports car but look long enough something will turn up. The reason I would go stock is because buying a modded car most oftentimes just leads to problems that will cost you more money in the long run. In short, just join a car forum :)
The LS engines barley weigh more than the FA20. The LS3 weighs about 7lbs more. They are aluminum block V8's. If you look at Ken Gushis reviews he states the car still retains its balance.
FullMetal1717 where did you get that idea? The LS is no doubt a very light V8 but it still weighs more than the Camry's V6 for example... I haven't seen exact weight stats on the FA20 but if we compare it to Subaru's other 2.0s there should be at least a difference of 100 pounds..that difference is also exaggerated by the CoG a boxer has versus a V engine, because again, that boxer sits low as hell for a reason. The car Ken tested probably retains its balance because of a major suspension upgrade which on a track is fine, but I would imagine many people would find it stiff as hell on public roads.
FullMetal1717 The Chevy LS V8 weighs 200 lbs more. FA20 - 260lbs, Chevy LS 460lbs.. And all that extra weight is in all the wrong places, ahead of the front axle, and much higher up. It's like driving with an adult deer strapped to your hood.. . Still. Not a bad choice if you just want a drag car, or a steer it with your right foot drift car!
its probably a crate LS2 from GM. They can be purchased (like the LS3) in a variety of different HP levels beyond the factory specs from the Corvette. They use the LS3 in the "Flying Miata" and its rated at 480hp which I though was weird since its rated at 430HP in the Vette. I contacted the company and they explained the crate engine thing to me. Thats why they dont put an LS7/427 in a Miata because from a cost stand point it doesn't make sense when compared to the cheaper LS3
I imagine the power/weight of this car is CRAZY. LSX's are very efficient. You can go down the highway at less than 1,500rpm in a car as light as this the fuel economy probably isn't as bad as one would think.
Much better setup going with the Crawford IMO, still get to keep the boxer which is a good thing but the only drawback is i hear Crawford hasn't figured out the overheating issues :/. but for 20 grand i think having the Crawford BRZ is a better investment. But LS2 sounds purdy and makes good torque to power ratio soooo i guess it all boils down to preference
This is one of those no brainer ideas that just doesn't quite work in the real world. I'd rather have a detuned LS1 to keep the power to more managable levels for the weight of the car. 300 rwhp in a 2750lb car is more than enough for most people. Excellent execution and im sure the thing is stupid fast, too. good job.
People keep stating that the balance won't be affected because the wight diff is minimal. Weight is not all that matters; center of gravity is important. The boxer engine sits lower then the LS this could drastically change the balance
May get better. I get 26-30 in my BRZ depending on where I am driving. I was able to achieve 32 in my C6 Corvette. With the weight savings, it may be able to get upwards of 35. Craziness!
Nice work.... kind of "best of both world". The only strange thing for me is "why install a 500HP in a BRZ when you can put 500HP in the BRZ engine ?". My BRZ (in fact a GT86) do have 476RWHP and I'm not even trying hard (supercharger, exhaust line, and some minor stuff).
I'm pretty sure thats what they did the corvette cover doesnt fit right, if you notice the oil cap is at an awkward place. They are all ls2 engines, but have different accesories to fit the different car's body
At a constant 65 mph I get 39 mpg in my manual BRZ. The Zo6 Vette can hit 30 mpg at the same speed ( I have a friend with one). At 80 mph the Z06 Vette will most likely get BETTER mileage than the manual stock BRZ. The Manual 4200 pound 560 hp CTSV gets 23 mpg at 65 mph.
I respect the work. It is awesome and beautiful. Just not my cup of tea because it defeat the purpose of 'lowest CoG for any production car' due to the boxer engine. To each their own, it's a nice ride.
It's not a "giant" V8. The only thing big about it is it's displacement it'll fit into pretty much anything and it's also aluminum. Not only do you get tons more torque, LS swaps usually end up with a power/weight improvement also.
LS2 10,000$ Kit to do it: 8,000$ Labour if you cant do it yourself: 1000$ Total: About $20,000 with taxes 30,000$ car (after taxes) + 20,000$ = 50,000$ total + stickier tires, better rims etc probably around the 50,000$ price range in total for this I could think of better ways to spend your money. For example, you could easily throw a crawford turbo kit on this and get similar performance. But the naturally aspirated LS2 would probably still destroy it. If I had the money I would do it. I wonder what the 0-60 time on this car is. I cant see it ruining the balance too much after you put on the bigger rims/tires. Maybe adds an extra 150lbs. In total with the tires and everything maybe 300lbs in total to the car. With double the horse and like triple the torque that wouldn't be an issue.
well theres's one guy running a bmw v10 from a m5 with nos 800+ hp it's just up to what you want really how far you want to go and how deep your pockets are.
The LS engine fit because it was pushrod. Also - the fuel mileage of an LS engine, power to weight and power to physical size are comparable to any "modern" engine
frs/brz is about center of gravity not about being a brute force muscle car, the flat four moves the weight of the car down low, while the vett engine run its weight up much higher, while this brz has alot more power, it can handle corners like a stock
There goes the balance that toyota and subaru worked so hard to achieve, this car must be crazy front heavy, unstable wobbly and oversteer like a bitch.
The auto is rated for 25/34. No one buys an auto twin for performance. The manual is rated for 22/30. You're off on your corvette numbers as well as the LS2 was rated at 18/28. I will say that the twins will not get 40mpg in manual trim. I don't know about the auto though. I'd love to get my hands on this one though just to see what it can do. The balance is already a bit off from the factory unfortunately. I'm working on losing a bit of front end weight on mine. :)
People always say this on videos as if they know how long it's been since the engine was running. Maybe he just got there, shut off the engine, and people asked him to fire it up right after. You will never know the truth but you assume the guy is a moron.
they filmed the exhaust and there was no condensation coming out so it wouldn't have been terribly cold. Besides he didn't rev it that high either. It sounds like it because its a bad ass engine :P I wouldn't throw it in my BRZ though...
what is the thing in the description about the LS2 Z06? I could've sword the Z06 has never come with an LS2? I could be wrong but I thought the c5 still had a 5.7L and the c6 had a 7L...
Oh, ok.. Sorry, it's rated at 25/34.. You're right, I was WAY off! LOL.. Meanwhile, the Corvette is rated at 16/26... Now, one could argue that the Corvette's EPA rating is conservative, but the same could be said of the BRZ/FRS numbers, as I've heard that they can do better than 40 on the highway.
Wondering the same thing. Would this be less than a 2014 stingray, which starts at ~$51,000. I would easily say 20K ontop of the price for the car, but with the reselling of original parts, not sure.
Depends on what you have, and what skills you have for fab work. You can get a chevy 5.3 from a truck for $500, you can can get an ls2 and t56 pullout from a GTO for $4000, and you could buy all brand new stuff for quite a bit more than that. The best way to do this is probably with a crate LS3. Zero miles, 7 grand gets you 430hp/430lbft with OEM reliability. After that, you could get a TR6060 for about 2 grand probably. You're up to 9 now, factor in wiring and ECU probably another grand, $1500 for a driveshaft assuming you want alu, and probably $1500 for a decent differential.
Skylar Garrett still cheaper and will be better then other cars out there at that performance level shit i would do it the thing finding a shop willing to do it without charging to much of a service charge
I find this video odd. What other mods does the car have? The LS2 is not the Z06 powerplant. That would be the LS7. The LS2 came out of the 05-07 base model corvette and is pushing far less than 500hp.
I'm not sure where you are getting your info. The automatic BRZ doesn't even get 35 mpg. The manual is rated at 30. I averaged about 28 in my C6 corvette and was able to get 32 on numerous road trips. My BRZ averages anywhere from 26-30.
Touche. It appears the ratings change hurt the corvette a bit. Looks like the EPA gave it a 2mpg hit. My sticker says 18/28. The 16/26 number is most likely more realistic anyway.
Stock BRZ engine is hell of a lot stronger than an STi engine, and there are plenty of STi engines with 500hp out there. If STi can take 500hp easily, BRZ will do 650hp. So putting a V8 with 500hp is pointless and a waste of time. You just added 250lbs to the front of the car, for no reason. Now if that V8 was making 1000hp, that would be different.
For the fa to put out 650 the block will need to be sleeved, force induction with ridiculous lag but with the v8 all motor with upgraded internals that motor can easily make 700
Y10Q Stock BRZ is making the same torque and HP as my 2011 honda accord. An STI has 270hp stock with the turbocharger and also has a larger displacement. The STI limited has 306hp and 290ftlb of torque, it blows the BRZ out of the water
Why does everyone cry over a beast ass motor getting put in a nice ass car?
Proving once again that there is nowhere you can't wedge a small block.
Remigus Ker I can think of afew places....
Brett Collins No, not a bobcat. Pretty sure one of the places he was referring to, is up an asshole...

.
xColours it's unbalanced now
60 pounds of extra weight is no worse than adding a turbo to that boxer. And this will make more power much more reliably.
Love it and now I'm rethinking the FA20 build with forced induction and instead prefer to go with and LS. I was going to spend around $25k on making a reliable 500hp with the FA20 but now I've got to go back to the drawing board.

Cops will never know what hit 'em, nobody expects a Z06 engine swap to be in a BRZ.
LS2 was never a Z06 motor. Base 'Vette, but still...
+Ultrakillerism It doesn't mater what engine you have, You can't outrun a Motorola.
+godofawesum223 Yes you can. I've done it a few times.

Thats how you make the slowest sports car In the world not slow
+Badaboom Badabing Well said! That thing is A complete beast now dam!
brz are so slow stock it's so disappointing and depressing smh
There are a lot of slower sports cars. The new Miata is a lot slower than the 86.
Slowest "sports car" in world would go to the miata i believe

we need more people like you !!!
Well, said. I still can't stand the 2jz engine in the mustang body but I understand that it is probably faster and they can do what they want with their car.
Wise observation, we should all think like you more.
Damn exhaust setup is amazing on that one. Sounds just like a nascar..
Whoever did this did a nice job of making it look like it came that way somewhat as well!
they should have built in a 8 cylinder boxer engine XD
Why? So you can spin more bearings?
Even still, an average combined rating of 19-22, and up to 30mpg on the highway is truly exceptional for such a car.. Hell, my old Toyota MR2 Turbo returned similar MPG numbers, and that was a 4 banger!! Of coarse, it was boosted up a bit : )

i bet most of the people that think small blocks are heavy and dont belong in imports dont know how much a 2jz actually weighs.
See this Toyota!?!?! This is what you need to be doing. Light stiff chassis, good solid engine.
That was the first thing I noticed...but still BRZ06 is a freaking cool name.

The Z06 motor was a 5.7 L LS1 that made about 415 HP, about that same as the 6.0 LS2. Getting 500 hp out of an LS2 is pretty simple.
weapons grade performance sure does some beautiful work

I could think of better ways to spend your money.
But now you turbo the ls2 for even more power lol like Shure you could turbo the smaller stock engine but why not go crazy if you have the cash right?
Jesse Dean Because that chassis can only handle so much power. Once you get to the 400HP 400Ft/lbs mark the chassis becomes overwhelmed.
well theres's one guy running a bmw v10 from a m5 with nos 800+ hp it's just up to what you want really how far you want to go and how deep your pockets are.
10000 for a LS2? i can get a LS2 from a junkyard for about $500
***** I agree granted here in Canada they are a bit more then $500 most of the time, not much more though.
The LS engine fit because it was pushrod. Also - the fuel mileage of an LS engine, power to weight and power to physical size are comparable to any "modern" engine
frs/brz is about center of gravity not about being a brute force muscle car, the flat four moves the weight of the car down low, while the vett engine run its weight up much higher, while this brz has alot more power, it can handle corners like a stock
how is that fucking it up? this is awesome. same concept as the cobra big engine+little car=awesome
Doesn't sound stock at all (the LS2 motor that is), so I'd probably give him the benefit of the doubt. Bad ass swap either way.
I thought my keyboard was wet, but it was only my drool.
can you do this to an frs as well since theyre essencially the same car
They are the exact same cars...
wrifraff no
one has the logo of subaru adn the other doesent
BLR IDRIFT Don't forget the HID lights in the BRZ. They are obviously dramatically different :-P
So awesome, LS swap always wins
I love cutting up new cars.
as much as the boxer sounds good, its tough to beat the roar of an LS V8
This is amazing.
There goes the balance that toyota and subaru worked so hard to achieve, this car must be crazy front heavy, unstable wobbly and oversteer like a bitch.
Except LS motors don't weigh much more.
Oooooo!!!!!, that mutha spound BadAss, Boi, its Bitchin. Lov it
The auto is rated for 25/34. :)
Yea, I had a hard time consistently getting over 20mpg in my STI.
Haha "It's just a really complicated photoshop"
it's great to cold start your engine and rev the shit out of it gotta love more money than brains
Not to spam, but swapping the engine here reminded me of the Crawford Turbo BRZ
(450 HP!!!)
LOL YOU DONT SEE ANYONE PUTTING A POS DOHC FORD MOTOR IN RX7's AND STUFF LIKE THAT LOL LS MOTORS ARE LIGHTWEIGHT AND POWERFUL! LONG LIVE THE PUSHROD!!
Thank you for screaming to get your point across.
Richard Harrow Sorry im a real car enthusiast.
Me too haha
I'd take the 4 valve Ford 4.6 over the LS almost any day of the week.
chasen432 Obviously not an internet enthusiast.
I heard him say in the video it was 15k in upgrades but the factory drive train can 'easily' be sold for 4500.
Represent CT!! 1 question, why the heck is your exhaust so small with that engine in it? It's so little.
what is the thing in the description about the LS2 Z06?
Possibility of wedging a turbocharger or two in there? 🤔
how much does it cost to do that? including installing?
heard him say it was 15 grand for parts probably 20 grand total
Depends on what you have, and what skills you have for fab work. You can get a chevy 5.3 from a truck for $500, you can can get an ls2 and t56 pullout from a GTO for $4000, and you could buy all brand new stuff for quite a bit more than that. The best way to do this is probably with a crate LS3. Zero miles, 7 grand gets you 430hp/430lbft with OEM reliability. After that, you could get a TR6060 for about 2 grand probably. You're up to 9 now, factor in wiring and ECU probably another grand, $1500 for a driveshaft assuming you want alu, and probably $1500 for a decent differential.
an thats all including getting it install to or u have to install it yourself?
Skylar Garrett still cheaper and will be better then other cars out there at that performance level shit i would do it the thing finding a shop willing to do it without charging to much of a service charge
yeah your right
I dont know about this, but there is a 911 with an LS7 swapped into it and the car actually lost over 100lbs going to the V8.
Crazy... love it...
only fr-s i respect
I find this video odd. What other mods does the car have? The LS2 is not the Z06 powerplant. That would be the LS7. The LS2 came out of the 05-07 base model corvette and is pushing far less than 500hp.
Weight balance is fucked up now. From flat 4 to tall v8.
***** I said weight balance, It could be half the weight but if it sits high, it acts as pendulum.
***** Listen fuckboy to what I'm saying.
This fucking guy refer to center of gravity by saying Weight Balance. Fucking dead lol
I'm not sure where you are getting your info. The automatic BRZ doesn't even get 35 mpg. The manual is rated at 30. I averaged about 28 in my C6 corvette and was able to get 32 on numerous road trips. My BRZ averages anywhere from 26-30.
Do any of the electronics work?
I want to see this thing on the track!!!
Touche. It appears the ratings change hurt the corvette a bit. Looks like the EPA gave it a 2mpg hit. My sticker says 18/28. The 16/26 number is most likely more realistic anyway.
ls2 is not a corvette z06 engine
The 6.0 LS2 came in the C6 Z06 from 2005-2007
Danny Jelencic LS2 never came in any Z06. The LS2 came in the base model C6 as the original engine. The LS3 replaced it. The C6 Z06 had an LS7.
Danny Jelencic the base c6 came with is2 from 05-07 z06 runs an ls7 in the c6 chassis
Yeah just for the word game
What about the drive shaft and diff are they stoke?
Dat burble.
To clarify, though, the engine's originally from a GTO, not a Corvette Z06 (which would've had the LS7).
Being an 86 owner this sounds very unnatural...good but unnatural :P
+Y10Q stock brz pulling 650hp... are you on fucking drugs? its hard enough keeping the thing reliable at 400hp on a stock block alone.
Was this video taken in Danbury Ct?
soooo sick! omg
Nice swap. What's the weight penalty if any?
I think it redistributes the weight to 54/46 but I'm not 100% sure. It's an aluminum block V8 I believe so they are pretty light.
LS7 is the only engine I would want to see in this car.
Awesome !
I would throw a ls2 into a brz they are pathetically slow from factory.
I still want to see a porsche Flat 6 in FRS/BRZ
fuuuuuuuck i know what im getting now.... time to hunt for a performance shop willing to do this without breaking the bank
LS2 came in the gto/trailblazer ss NOT the z06... ls2 is base model for corvette. Your thinking the ls6(z06)
