I've been trying to learn how to do this for years. Multiple videos, but no one seem to be able to lay it out simply. I finally came across this video and it makes so much sense. Thank you.
Hi Matthew. I searched for "outside Jazz" and found your video. Very clear and instructive. "How outside do you ant to be?" I'll think about that one all day! Thanks.
This is what I love, when a person is insightful enough to distill a thing to its essence. Outside, inside, tension and release, and you work out the implications on your own. Masterful instruction. And since I'm in the Philly area I will have to roll up to NYC and hear Mr. Wolff play some time. Much thanks for posting this.
Hi! I`m from Croatia, and I` a school teacher (music). Last few years I`m trying to figure jazz progressions, chords by myself, watched a thousend tutorials on youtube, read many books, but this video helped me the most to comprehense that jazz moments when nothing seems to have sense. Thank you very much!
A great lesson in just 5 minutes and 17 seconds. He made a great point on how to utilize or applying it to songs. I wish everything was made this simple.
Terrific! Such a clear explanation! You read stuff about tritone substitutions and altered scales and it sounds head-wrecking. Michael Wolff shows that it is within our grasp if we just work on it. Many thanks!
Grasping the principle of playing outside is very easy. Just play any of the 5 tones not in the scale. But the magic lies in the phrasing and timing of the phrase. The same lick with some outside notes can sound much better an eight note later, simply because of the relation between the strong beats in a measure and the placement of outside tones in relation to these beats. Especially when you are playing over chord schemes and even more especially with chord schemes that go all over the place by shifting keys constantly. That takes a life time to develop and discover, according to your own tastes.
Michael I am learning so much from your videos. You've got it all, the whole package -and you're so relaxed when you play. Your cameraman on the other hand seems to be suffering from bouts of schizophrenia. Perhaps he should invest in a steady tripod. lol
always enjoy coming here for a breath of fresh musical air! much appreciated Matthew and thanks to Michael for sharing so generously his unique talent and art!
Makes me angry. I could hear Inside and Outside clearly in 1970 but didn't have the ear to identify the notes and figure it out. I only knew a few local rock musicians and no jazzers - I took jazz lessons anywhere I could find them including the University of Pittsburgh back in the 70's trying to find someone who could explain what I was hearing, but there was was no mention of this whatsoever. Back then Modes were the magic mojo that were whispered in dark corners - but what did you do with them? I laugh. Did these definitions exist back then or where they kept secret like magicians and pool sharks? Now in like 60 seconds I know how it works and also the language that describes it. I am 64 and haven't tried jazz for 40 years. And am now tempted to give it another go... but I'm still pissed... THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO
So bloody happy you said that mate... think many of us experienced and felt the same thing as you. I'm now 73 and will get the Soprano going on this super lesson...
Michael thank you so much! For years I heard people like McCoy Tyner and Herbie Hancock do this but I couldn't get my head around it. You explain it well
Thanks so much for this knowledge that college professors don't want to explain. They want you to keep guessing. (maybe it was because I was a girl LOL). I took a college course in jazz studies and they missed the boat. It was a very good music school too. I had to analyze jazz chords and couldn't figure out the root note of the chord. With all those accidentals how could you. I was frustrated and failed the class miserably. THANKS for making it easy to understand without all that theory.
The only thing this video needs is a tripod. It's a little distracting when the camera man feels the groove and starts dancing the camera about. The info was priceless and fantastic though.
Enjoy so much to hear you playng and singing,,,beautiful voice!Once I get a course of you,PianoToday,,,but I lost it,so I feel happy to find you again. How to make contact with you?Regards!!
Wow. Any note thats not in a given key is a pentatonic scale. (Like every note thats not in C major is in the F# pentatonic) Thanks for the insight man!
Bloody good stuff. Tho I play guitar, all these vids are better than all of the guitar videos out there because most fail to state the general principle involved
Oh My god!?!?!??!?!?! You have a Steinway & Sons piano . That are My favourite Pianos and I'm a very Big Steinway Fan!!!! To can Play on a Steinway Would be the biggest present for me!!!! respect; GREAT PIANO!!!!
Great stuff! And nice view you have there! Sometimes sounded like McCoy Tyner to me. Is there a technical reason some outside notes sound good and others sound like gross mistakes or is it just in the ear?
DucksDeLucks Been 9 months but if you still have the same question: Yes, there is a reason and it has to do with using different modes over one chord. This makes some notes sound 'good' when using the 'right' mode. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Such beauty in its very simplicity. A big thanks to you, Matthew!
Love those diminished chord patterns. Its great to be able to pause your lesson and then repeat it on my piano. Thanks.
Really liked this video. Delivers the concept but doesn't overdo it. Leaves it to me to do something with it. Please do more!
Love this video. I like the way Michael Wolff explains the changes and playing outside and how he associates it with quartals and modes

I'm a guitar player, but seeing you explain this on piano helped me out so much. Thanks!
thank you so much Michael to give me the opportunity to understand the way to play outside!
Snake thank you for featuring Michael on your channel
Great concept. I've long wondered about notes outside the scale in written pieces that I play.
The best way to learn out is to watch the video of Mccoy Tyner in Belgium 1965 playing My Favorite Things. LOL.
when your playing out on the G7, its not neccasarily playing out, its more like treating it like an altered chord which resolves really well

The only thing this video needs is a tripod. It's a little distracting when the camera man feels the groove and starts dancing the camera about. The info was priceless and fantastic though.
