To be honest the biggest danger of being drunk on an e-bike is to one's self. Therefore there should be limited regulation. The government should generally stay out of anything that can't get above 30mph.
Plus You would need balance to operate such things. Drunk people can’t even walk straight. They probably won’t make it out 100 meters before they fall.
@everyday tenor I think he was drunk when he hammered out that statement. No laws regarding typing while drunk. As you can see when reading back the post a sobriety test is not needed. :)
A scooter with pedals is not the same as a bicycle with a small electric motor. A scooter with pedals is just a way of bypassing the normal licensing and insurance requirements in Canada. In the EU/Britain they are very strict, Pedals are not enough, it must be pedal assist, no throttle(except if you retrofit) and max speed while assisted is restricted to 25 KPH or 15.5 MPH(which i think is too low) and 250 watt max power which i again think is too low BUT at 69 i can keep up with most of the lycra boys and I can climb hills that even when i was young i would have to get off and push, so maybe they have got it right. If you want to go 30 mph plus and not pedal then its not an Ebike its a scooter/moped and so is a motor vehicle and is taxed etc accordingly. I am all for Ebikes, I have three, and i think max assisted should be 20 MPH and max power should be 500 watts but its not going to happen so i have to make do. BUT i can see Canada following us in the near future and tightening up the laws so as to remove what is seen as a loophole in regard to scooters.
Everything else is impossible to afford here not to mention that it’s not people “bypassing laws to drive it without insuring it” it’s using a “loophole” it is not wanting to spend an exorbitant amount on insurance, have to wait 3 years to get license or to even buy a car anybody with a option would very likely rather an actual electric bicycle but they are not affordable. Not to mention you’re acting like Canada and Britain is the same it takes you guys 3 hours to cross your country some people here can’t even get to the nearest city in twice that and a large number of people live an hour away from town even a 15 minute drive into town (extremely normal) would take like an hour and a half at 20kph. 30-50kph is reasonable and almost needed here there it is simply a safety hazard Not to mention we have wide open roads and a lot of fields and open space you guys have narrow roads that are very interconnected and tend to be much much more densely packed You guys have .0014 square miles per person we have .096 per person that’s like 15 times the amount of space per person where not gonna follow you’re laws because they make no sense there not to mention if they did the ones bought before the law change can likely still ride them
I wanted to get a Eahore M1p but not totally sure if these are allowed bc they don't come with pedals, but they do come with a DOT and vin number for it please help
Check your local laws. As in the government website and NOT TH-cam. Every state etc is different. For the most part the definition of an ebike (electric bicycle) includes pedals. So where I live in Ontario for ex, no pedals?means it's not an ebike and you'd need a licence and insurance.
Hi! Ontario Government says "a permanent label from the manufacturer in both English and French stating that your e-bike conforms to the federal definition of a power-assisted bicycle".... mine was bought from the US and sure thing they don't have any labels like this, I certainly can provide the spec sheet of my bike but it will be extremely challenging to get a label from the manufacturer. Any advice? Thanks!
Hmmm I think a MOTORCYCLE! That's clearly what u want, so go for it! People like u who try to work around the rules are part of the problem. If you can't answer your own question, then you clearly know little about batteries and shouldn't even consider tinkering around in the 1st place!
@@cameranmanner4701 I mean, 40kph is the limit on residential roads, it'd be safer at 40kph than 32kph IMO. More than that it's not ideal though, especially since these things don't require insurance or registration.
The pedals are annoying. They hit your legs and drag during low turns. They are removable. The ebike has compartments. I removed mine and placed them in the compartment. Now how does that fundamentally change my ebike. It still has pedals, albeit not visible. If they become necessary I can attach them and away I go. Not that I ever would though. The pedals are attached to a short chain and provide very little momentum when used. It's much easier to just push the bike. The only reason the manufacturer adds the pedals is to mollify the powers that be. If a cop can't tell the difference between an ebike and a motorcycle unless he sees pedals, after 10 years of ebikes being around, I have to wonder about that policeman's judgement. Our laws in Canada are based on commonlaw, which is supposed to be derived from common sense. Common sense would dictate that the removable pedals are just as usable after being removed from a storage compartment and reattached, and that this would in no way change the characteristics of said ebike. The government of Canada has detemined the speed of freedom in Canada is 20 MPH/32 KPH. I get the feeling that bugs them.
It's ridiculous. If you take the pedals off a bicycle, does it stop being a bicycle? If you put training wheels on a bicycle, does it stop being a bicycle? What's even worse is that on NCC trails, e-bikes are permitted, so long as they "look like a traditional bike". If your e-bike doesn't look like a "traditional bicycle", you're not permitted to ride on the multi-use pathways. It's not based on any kind of specifications, and even though your e-bike is complies with all regulations defining your e-bike as a bicycle, if it looks different, it's not permitted on the pathways. Discrimination based on appearance only.
Yes but like they said in the video as well as I've read on ICBC's website that you cannot remove the pedals or else you need a license and insurance. If you removed yours and haven't gotten into trouble yet then you're lucky.. assuming you're also in Canada
Tighten up the rules but dont change things so that you need a license to operate. If that happens, that would make ebikes obsolete and pretty pointless. I see nothing wrong with people trying to be more eco-friendly and save some money! The problem is that ppl will try and take advantage if they can. Those ppl should be punished. On a large scale, the biggest ebike concern is actually THEFT.
