This works, tried it with a dead car battery by replacing the old acid with salt water. It only put out about 90 amps though we're as battery acid generated 600-700 amps. So it's not nearly as powerful as an acid battery but it does work.

Best to use a piece of cloth between them to keep them from touching. Fill the jar up with warm Salt water that's been distilled or rain water will work too. Then charge them by placing the positive terminal on one plate and the negative terminal on the other, once you choose which plates are pos/neg, Mark them because they'll stay that way forever. You should get about 2volts with each pair of plates. You can connect the pairs in series to get the voltage you want, good luck.
That fluorescent lamp requires alternating current, 120 volts. That single cell for its size would produce quite a substantial current but the voltage is probably about 1.2 volts of direct current. So we dislike it because of the fake display at the end.
