Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!

I’ve kept a juniper indoors under lights for 13 yrs and counting. Recently I started placing it outdoors on my new patio in summer. It’s the one with tiny compact needles, I think Japanese. They need lots of water and humidity trays. I’m in Toronto so the winters are too cold outside, but the Netherlands is fine outside in winter.
Can I ask what lights do you use to keep the plant alive? Does it also damage surrounding furniture?
@@tazzmania6292 I use long fluorescent shop lights on shelving units, a set of two, each with 2 48” bulbs, so 4 lights. I keep the open light side covered with white Bristol board to keep too much light entering the room, so no furniture damage, I don’t think it would damage the furniture anyhow. But when I replace the bulbs I will use LEDs next, better and less power.
How many hours do you keep the lights on?
@@thrillhill5257 in winter about 8-9 hrs on during the day, and I guess that makes 15-16 off. I imitate the low sun and short daylight of winter…

I live in Siberia. Traditional bonsai species die outside in winter unless they are brought inside, which is not good for them either. So I made my own bonsai from the Siberian pine, a close relative of the Japanese white pine, and also from the Siberian larch. This winter all my bonsai got damaged or even died (it was - 40 C). But the Siberian pine seems to feel even better. Weirdly, the Korean pine got hardly any damage. Northern white cedar got significant damage (but all 4 survived). All my 4 Scots pines, which are actually the most common tree species here, died completely.

I have part A (pk) and part B (nitrogen) solid fertilizer. I often feed 700-800 ppms with crop plants, how much should I feed a juniper bonsai?

great video! I am just curious, does the frequency at which you need to water a Juniper stay the same year round? or do you water less in winter time when it's cold?
Definitely less in winter, the tree slows down and requires less water - if you water on observation you'll notice the differences in seasons.

When repotting a Juniper from a garden centre pot (plastic) to a bonsai pot, is it safe to clean out all the old soil or should some be left in the root ball please?
I usually leave some, and remove the rest on a later repotting a few years down the road.

I got my first at Christmas last year. I never had one and didnt know they were suppose to stay outside. It did well inside near a window bit I just got around to looking it up.
Im still not even sure which type it is since my sister and mom bought it online. I didn't even think to ask or look it up.
I put it out when it got warm but unfortunately I was worried about deer eating it at night but would put it out. I watered when dry but then I got paranoid it was drying out when the spine started to look pale. I thought it was due to the sun like maybe if its in direct and hot sun it somehow dries the spines. Sometimes it gets more green again but recently the top part gotten pale.
I now know it needs sun but now Im wondering what to do.
The most important thing is to always keep the Juniper outside, if kept indoors it will slowly deteriorate as these trees need a period of winter dormancy. Lots of sun, and never let it dry out.
@bonsaiempire I think many of the viewers are possibly ones with a Procumbens juniper. These are commonly sold in Canada as bonsai. I believe they are sold hastily and require more specific care then most fully understand. A greenhouse selling it as an indoor "plant" is so misleading and I myself have had several die even with the most conserted efforts. If someone could do a deep dive on this topic it would help many many beginners.
How do Ash Juniper do as bonsai? They’re native to where I live and would like to make a bonsai of one so that way I can bring a piece of home with me whenever I move. Also unrelated question: what’s the music used in the background?

I have a Juniper I’ve had for 13 years grown indoors under lights year round, though I now put it on the my new deck for four months in summer…. It has fine small needles, probably Japanese or common juniper, not like the ones you have there…. The typical one they sell.

I have a question tho, hope u can help; I live south of the US, in the desert. Summers get hellish and dry, sure there's plenty of sun, but it can get up to 50°c. Should I still keep it outside, or could it get damage from the heat?

When you say we need to place it in the shade for the first month does that mean indirect sunlight outside or can it be indoors with indirect or direct sunlight? Maybe it needs wind and humidity I suppose
Not indoors, unless you mean an unheated greenhouse. Indirect sunlight, just to make sure the tree does not lose all its moisture in the wind/sun.

I got a jumpier bonsai for Valentine’s Day and started doing research… I found out I need to “winterize” my bonsai but If I put my bonsai in the garage for the winter will it be okay? I don’t have any equipment for heating 😬 if the temperature drops to freezing what should I do?

Hey love the vid, but I have a question. I live in Arizona and it’s around 110 Fahrenheit right now, should I still put the tree outside!
Absolutely, but likely protected from too much direct sunlight around midday.
These are not to be outside in Az they dry out to fast and need way more water to survive
@@Johnny-zu7poI just got one, I’m in Vegas. Same Arizona weather. When I got it the dirt was DRY. Absolutely no moisture in it. I soaked it yesterday morning, left it outside for most the day, by nighttime the dirt was dry again. Idk if it just drank it all up or what. Should I just keep it watering to keep the dirt from drying? Been reading some ppl let it dry like that for about 3-5 days until they water it again as junipers seem to be pretty sturdy

I have a new little Juniper from a store like you have in this video with the very small leaves. I am new to this. With the soil in these types of Bonsai's, it's really hard to tell when the soil is dry. How many days does it usually take to be dry in a dry, sunny climate?
That depends way too much on the weather, season, wind, etc etc - so you will need to monitor your tree and water it before it becomes dry.
@@bonsaiempire the soil is covered in pretty decorative rocks so it's hard to tell if the soil is dry. At this point I'm watering every three days. I was doing every week but after 1 month it started to go yellow in some leaves. I have it inside in direct sun on my window sill. Will being in indoors kill it, even with plenty of Oakland sun?
Junipers can not, ever, be kept indoors. And perhaps get rid of those decorative rocks - you need to water on observation and not every 'x' days. If you continue to water un-observed, your tree will die.

@@thecelebrationdj Yes there are. (even though most of bonsai trees should be outside) but if you really watered every 3 days and even 1 week, it will definitely die. You have to water everyday, as they said water when it gets slightly dry, but that means everyday, so just look up some videos how to treat bonsai trees properly🎋
What should I look for when trimming/ pruning? I have a baby juniper only about a year old. Should I trim or wait till it’s older?

To me, it is an absolute no. They need winter dormancy, temperature changes between day and night and LOTS of light.

So if Junipers have to stay outside but can't tolerate frost more than -15 celcius...How does a Canadian go about it? I have a slightly insulated garage with a big south facing window. Would that be alright? I heard dryness could become a problem if kept in such place. I don't know what to do anymore. Help :)
I got one for indoors I'm a beginner but I've had it for a few weeks I keep the soils slightly moist and have kept in a window becasue it's been so cloudy and raining here I think i found what works for mine but only time will tell idk if this helps but that's what I do
I wonder if lamps could help, I have adhd and I worry I will forget caring for mine if it’s not in a space I see every day in the morning after a few months when the novelty goes off, I am considering getting an indoor plant that reminds me to care for the one I have sk i Can place it in the back yard but maybe plant lights could work? No - Junipers need to be kept outdoors. They can not survive indoors.

Well it depends on your goals - if strong growth and development is your goal, you need a larger pot. If the tree is 'ready' you want it in a smaller pot.

No, it means you no longer have big changes in mind for its development. So you are happy with the root surface, the trunk and main branches. From this point on, you focus on maintaining the tree instead of developing it.

There’s an app that comes up when you google juniper identification or related querries, I identified my bonsái with it because in my country people who grow plants don’t know or care for scientific names haha!
It’s called plant me, but I assume any app with lots of users should work, also be careful it looks like you need to pay for a premium subscription but you don’t, you just need to find the skip button I almost fell for the free trial they tried to push me!
