    Do you have any thoughts on why the mosaics may be a little destroyed? 🤣

      Much of the local population was transferred to the new town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, about 5 km (3.1 mi) from Volubilis. The ruins remained substantially intact until they were devastated by an earthquake in the mid-18th century and subsequently looted by Moroccan rulers seeking stone for building Meknes.

    Congratulations on the success of your Moroccan series so far. Loved the tale about the mosaics, that pesky Lisbon earthquake 😂. I've never heard of a camel burger but I'm now not sure whether it tastes of beef or lamb haha. Cool ride on the train and the taxis - looks like your tour guide drives a hard bargain!

      Hi Matt, thank you for the congratulations. I had no idea these videos would prove to be so popular!!! I 100% say it tastes more like lamb than beef. But then and again when everyone else says frogs legs are like chicken, I'm the one who says they're more like a flaky fish!

    Right. An earthquake destroyed the mosaics. Lol. I think maybe someone didn't want them displayed in public or that people took them for "souvenirs". Enjoyed this episode Caroline. Train travel seems a bit of an adventure in Morocco too. It is good that you had a guide that speaks the native language so that you don't get ripped off

      Our guide was brilliant, not only with the negotiations of things like the taxi's, but I certainly felt like we were left a little more alone to enjoy things because they could see we were with a guide (and sometimes 2 guides) I love that others have seen the humour with the mosaics too!

    Thanks Caroline, for sharing your adventures in Morocco. Oh the fun of traveling in a large group. You do make friends and meet your fellow travelers. Nice you stayed in peoples homes and enjoyed their food. I would love to do a trip to Morocco. Love the channel and your work. Interesting about your reaction to beef, The less meat you eat the better. but I love it so. Cheers We all love Ice Cream🍦🍦🕵‍♂

      One of the things that I really love about Intrepid (and I promise it's not sponsored) is their ability to link you with locals and being able to visit their homes and eat their home cooked food. It is possible to find this when planning our own travel, but it's much more difficult. I agree about the less meat you eat, the better... but like you, I really love most other kinds of meat so I keep eating it! We do indeed all love ice cream - cheers! 🍦🍦

    How are you doing mrs Caroline. Thank you for your sharing your trips with us. Honestly with every new video I learn new information and new vocabularies as petit taxi is French word is only for short distance and carry 3 passengers 1 in front and 2 in back . Actually we know meat and chicken burgers but camel burgers I just know about it has similar to tast and texture to pork and beef , lamb . Hedim square ( square of demolition) is famous square in Meknes, Morocco. Was built in year 1672 - 1674 after sultan of Morocco Moulay Ismail demolished half of city of Meknes for his palace and square . Mansour gate is front of gate . Volubilis derived from Berber language . It’s Berber Roman city situated near city of Meknes , that may have been capital of kingdom of Mauretania, least from time of king jubail .

      We have lots of different types of burgers in the UK, most common ones are beef, pork, turkey, chicken and fish... but I'd never come across a camel burger so was eager to try it! I love how you know about the petit taxis having 1 passenger in the front and 2 in the back. I didn't know this and in a couple of weeks, you'll see the vlog where we make quite the faux pax as we try to fit 4 passengers in 🤣

    Last part of my research before Volubilis name is Amazigh word means leader grow along side of valley. It’s contains one of finest Truman basilica in Africa and Volubilis name refers to colorful bindweed flower from Berber word . UNESCO listed Volubilis as world heritage site in 1997 . In 1980s held international council on monuments and sites there . There several attractions such as basilica and triumphal arch , capitoline temple . Volubilis was responsible for producing grain which was used all through entire Roman Empire. Fes is city in northern inland and capital of fes Meknes and diminutive region . It’s second largest city in Morocco, north west or Atlas mountain, surrounded by hills and old city is centered around fez river . There are soak ( market) of fesel Bali . Fez old town or Medina. UNESCO heritage site as one or world largest dr ban pedestrian zones . There are several attractions such as Quaraouiyine Mosque. Madrasa ( school) education bou Inania .

      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd forgotten about the grain production in Volubilis - our guide did talk about this. And olives too as they had a reconstructed olive press at the site and were growing them just past the boundary. That area was incredibly fertile and had a very different feel to it compared to a lot of other places we saw in Morocco! I'm excited to share the next 2 Fes videos as I'll get to share a lot of the places your research has thrown up!

      I didn't realise Meknes was the ancient capital. I'm sure our guide would have told us this, but with so much information being shared, some things get missed. Now you've said it, I can see it in the architecture and grandeur of the place. It feels like the tourism there isn't geared towards people from the UK which was very refreshing too!

    I don't think there ever was any removal of "erotic art" from Volubilis, there are plenty of still preserved mosaic art with depictions of nudity in them that are for display for the public in the site itself and others in Museums. Volubilis ruins stayed intact for centuries untouched until the earthquake in the mid 18th century, after the earthquake there was some looting by some residents in Meknes, though Bab Mansur (the one which you mentioned had columns from Volubilis was build way before that in 17th century) the site was quickly later officially excavated and identified as a historic site, only about half the site is excavated and many ruins are yet to be revealed

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no - I completely missed that artwork on the site!! Was I wrong in saying the columbs on Bab Mansur were not from Volubilis then if that was built in the 17th century and the looting happened in the 18th?
