    Thanks Mike. That was a big help! The first one I did definitely put the FU in fun. As you said, practice, practice, practice. After a few more, I’m hitting my stride. Good news is, it doesn’t get much smaller than 316.

    Mike, Love your videos, I've been a ham for almost 42 years, & I used to get my connectors from Old timers at hamfest back in the 80s & 90s. I also worked for big computer companies like DEC & Wang Labs. We would use only Amphenol for our Data cables I would get mine from there and only use really good BNC/PL-259, etc connectors. But after leaving there I learned by mistakenly getting the cheap versions when I had no more of my stock left & would buy from E-Bay most times. I had problems, so I now only use Amphenol connectors because of their higher quality. You Pay a bit more, but you are getting a much better quality item.

      I guess I lucked out! I've not had any problems with the eBay connectors I've purchased, but I do understand the difference between good and cheap.

    Great video Mike, I need to put together some bnc coax cables. Had a major WTF moment a few months ago when I drove down to the Outer Banks to go portable and got my gear out on the beach, went to hook everything up and when I pulled out the PL259 coax I realized I left my bnc adapters at home. I just went to the bar, drank heavy and accepted defeat. 73 my friend!

      Oh man, I've been there. That feeling when your heart just sinks when you realize you won't be getting on the air is the worst. But, at least there's alcohol!

    Mike,
    First, thank you for showing the differences in the BNC connectors. I have used the first type and it is not so easy. I didn’t t know about the other two but they make the job easier and more trustworthy.
    Second, I see you are doing it by the clean cutting board in each new view but please tell others to have a vacuum running while cutting the shield. Those little pieces of the braid look so innocent but when they get loose and get into other projects they wreak havoc with electrons and will cause great amounts of hair loss while trying to find the cause.

    Nice video Mike - and very timely. I agree with the comment regarding use of Amphenol connectors due to their quality. However, I have no experience with RG316 coax. What is your preferred source and/or brand? The flexibility makes it ideal for use in the shack. Do you use if for jumpers? What is your primary use? Thanks.

      I got the RG-316 from PackTenna. I use it when portable for my feedline. Not so much in the shack.

    thanks Mike! I've been thinking about getting some rg-316 because of how small you can pack it. I'm guessing I could get some "jaws" I guess you'd call them to put in my powerpole crimpers?

      Absolutely you can. I have 2 crimpers and I’m always swapping out dies from one to another.

    Finally got the parts to do this. Looked great but shorted. No idea where the problem could be. To many variables.

    • @hamradiotube
      @hamradiotube  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      could be a tiny drop of solder under the center pin? That's about the only place it could short I would think.

    • @forgetyourlife
      @forgetyourlife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hamradiotube I forget to update this after we talked on Discord. I tore it apart and I think the solder blob was to big and spanned the gap to the rear of the inside were the center comes in. Who knows but I tried it again with less solder and it’s now working great. Old eyes as well, it’s so tiny in there even with 4X magnified glasses.

    What happens if I cut one or two strands of the center conductor?
    I ordered some of these connectors in January and they never arrived. I got a refund, but never purchased more.

      I’d try my hardest not too. There’s only like 6 in there :). But I believe that can change the resistance too so if you do cut some, I’d just do it again.
