  • When the kiln gives you broken pots turn them into Kintsugi! This tutorial shows an easy way to create beautiful Kintsugi pottery.
    Materials:
    Broken pottery- can be broke by you smashing it gently or by accident
    If you want to prevent your pieces from breaking in the first place do not use warped kiln shelves!
    Speedball Mona Lisa Adhesive
    Speedball Gold leaf(or any color leaf you'd like to use)
    E6000 Epoxy
    Synthetic bristle brush- for applying Speedball adhesive
    Stiff bristle brush or toothbrush to remove excess gold leaf
    Patience

    Is the gold leaf actually Schlag - dyed aluminium, that is relatively inexpensive? The adhesive - is that Acrylic Gold Size?

      Hilary Bravo that adhesive is not even close to a gold size. And while we’re on the subject, this is NOT Kintsugi. All she is doing is taking a modern day glue, gluing her piece together, and ridiculously used gold leaf as if it had anything to do with the bonding process. If you don’t know what Kintsugi is I would HIGHLY recommend you look it up here on TH-cam, because what this is that this woman is doing, to call it “Kintsugi” is a slap to the face to those Japanese people who for, generations have mastered the art of repairing ceramics with real lacquer (urushi) and gold.

    Kin = gold; tsugi = joining. Just a little tidbit of info. Very nice video, thank you!

    Thanks for the video Jessica! My donation pot hit the ground this weekend and the lid broke in two. After applying the E6000, should I wait for it to fully dry before applying the adhesive and also should I wait for the gold foil to dry on the adhesive before brushing it off? I'm retired so I can test my patience......thanks for sharing.

      If I might suggest a different video, try watching this:
      th-cam.com/video/I0S9PdUzu_E/w-d-xo.html
      It offers a more accurate instruction of kintsugi (and I daresay a more permanent method). But heck, it's your party so do as you please

    What really gets me is, I know without a shadow of a doubt that when she took that piece to her little convention or whatever she said it was, I’ll guarantee she made sure to tell everyone that inquired about the (sorry to say) HORRENDOUS looking gold leaf, that it was “Kintsugi.” Now all those people who are ignorant to looking up facts, will think she literally, repaired a plate, with some gold foil. Taking away ALL the real time and work that Kintsugi consists of. It’s almost laughable if it didn’t bother me so much that so many people are doing this and calling it Kintsugi.

    I thoroughly enjoy your videos! I broke a two inch piece off the corner of two of my half shelves for my kiln. Can I still use them in the kiln?

    Yeah, probably don't call it Kintsugi when you're not using any true Kintsugi techniques or materials, and you don't have any real training in it.

    Yea sorry, absolutely positively unequivocally NOT kintsugi. You should rename the title to, “an alternative to,” or something, something other then kintsugi. You can buy urushi and gold micha powder on Amazon so you know if you ever want to learn proper Kintsugi. I certainly hope you aren’t serious when you said you “repaired it with gold.” 😂

      Agreed. How very American of her, though, right? "Look at this beautiful art form steeped in tradition and meaning. How can I do it without any of the effort or expense?" Cultural appropriation at it's most basic form.
      Like the inner healing and transformation that it represents, Kintsugi cannot be rushed. It makes me crazy to work for a month or two on a piece and then see this crap pop up on etsy listed as kintsugi. Piss off with your super glue and paint. That's not kintsugi!

    • @charlescooperderose8872
      @charlescooperderose8872 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lily L yup. She didn’t even come close to Kintsugi. Had she mixed gold powder, any kind of gold powder with the glue she would have, at the very least taken one basic process of Kintsugi and incorporated it into her work. But this, this is a disgrace to Kintsugi, this is nothing short of ignorance and laziness to learning what Kintsugi is and consists of. I really hope she makes another video at least recognizing that what she did was not Kintsugi, after all it’s almost a slap in the face to the Japanese who have mastered the art of it.

      @@charlescooperderose8872 Hello ! All technics, even traditional can be revisited with modern twists. Obviously, this is not Kintsugi, and it should be retitles. But not everyone has time and money to go through lenghty, expensive courses. and not everyone wants to spend 3 months working on a cracked pot.
      I follow the most talented french Kintsugi practicionner (Myriam Greff) and she revisited technics. She works on glass, wood, she used alternatives technics that Urushi lacquers... And I urge you to tell me what she does is not Kintsugi.
      It's not cultural appropriation FFS, she's inspired by an artform, twisting it to her needs, timeframe and goals. Nothing to receive hate from.
      Cheers.

      karudea Caled with all due respect, you just massively confused me by conflicting yourself. Perhaps you might want to re-read what you just wrote? You just stated, “Obviously, this is not Kintsugi, and it should be retitles.” I quoted you word for word. Then towards the end of your comment you are urging me to tell you how what this lady did with glue is not kintsugi? Haha what? Lastly, I never said anything bashing her for not wanting to spend money and time going through lengthy, expensive courses for the real thing. You pretty much stated the obvious, and on the other hand, I don’t recall seeing one video anywhere, of traditional kintsugi, being made by adding anything other then what has been used for generations and perfected by masters of the art. No gold leaf, no E6009 and certainly no modern day glues. I guess I’m just baffled at your comment, you absolutely conflicted yourself.

    Uhm. Yes, well. I'm actually two WEEKS into a course of real, genuine kintsugi and still not even half way with my broken teacup. So, yes, this is an abomination. Please, don't call it kintsugi.

    • @karudeacaled1513
      @karudeacaled1513 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's Kintsugi either, but please be respectful, people don't have your time or money to go through a two weeks course (which is also an abomination, don't think you are a Kintsugi master because you followed a few classes).

    • @ptrkdbrwsk

      @@karudeacaled1513 Dear, I do not claim I am a master of whatever actually, I just think that Kintsugi is so much more, requires a lot of patience and attention to detail, and deserves to be treated with respect. Gluing stuff together with something sparkly does not. Yes, Kintsugi requires time and (for those living outside Japan) a bit of money, but hell, it's all about using great natural materials and applying yourself completely to repairing this precious piece of pottery, and it's what makes it so special.
