  • Dialing in your skateboard is as important as nailing your tricks. The pros have some secrets of their own when it comes to gear tweaks and personal preferences. In Setup, they reveal it all. For this installment, we hear from legendary skater Steve Caballero.

    Fuck it's so awesome to still see guys like Cab still ripping it up..makes me want to get back into skating. Love the old school pros..great that they still make the wider boards too..

      So, get back into skating :) Started a couple of months back after a 21 year break, it's still great... learning to carve bowls and ride ramps again is a blast.

    • @gregvance
      @gregvance 10 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Why do we ever stop?! I 'outgrew' it to be more 'grown up' I suppose - stupid mistake! Now I remember how much fun I used to have and now that I can actually afford a good setup I might do that.

    • @terrabun
      @terrabun 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The amount of choice in quality gear now is amazing, so much better than it used to be leaving all nostalgia aside. Would recommend looking at modern shaped decks if you get back to it, some really nice ones about. Riding a 9.25" Anti Hero Jeff Grosso now and loving it. Black Label (Lucero's company), Welcome and Death (if you're UK) all do nice boards in the wider widths.

      terrabun gregvance I stopped skating for 2 years almost but then i started again and Idk why i ever did. Im only 22 years old but man, i had forgotten how much fun it was to just skate for run.

      *****
      I had to scale back my expectations because of this. I used to skate vert ramps but now 5'-8' bowls are my limit and even then it scares the crap out of me regularly. Broke a rib 2 weeks on, slammed heavily a few times but got away with it so far. Yeah it's tougher on us, bu fuck sitting around getting old. Sounds like you had a real nasty bit of luck, some falls like that are just unavoidable.. been knocked out for an hour and smashed up on a vert ramp as a kid. see how it is when you're recovered, take it easy.. skate smaller and slower and love it for what you can do now, not trying to be Hosoi again :P

    That's a real skateboarder. Getting old and still rolling. Doesn't stop at 30 to go on with all the commercial skateboard bussiness. Just keep rolling. Damn, that deserves some respect.

    Just a little advice/Tipp to all younger real 🛹'er outta there who really love this great sport‼️: …
    When you become older & Life steals you the time for all those things like a full-time job, having a own family, etc., etc., …
    PLEASE go skateboarding minimum 1 - 2 Days a week & don’t stop‼️
    Otherwise you will regret it sooner or later because you recognize that you lost the skills & have to learn almost everything completely new.
    This is what I really regret =/ … never stop skating completely‼️✌🏼

    i never really understood what the rails are for. do they just help for sliding or what?

    • @akobiwilliams3752
      @akobiwilliams3752 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      slides and grabs

    • @blowenfuse
      @blowenfuse 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Less friction than the deck. You slide faster and smoother as well as keeping your graphic nice. Rails moved out of skating when street become more popular due to getting caught up on uneven ledges as well as the fact that people liked having a worn deck to prove they were skating hard. Rails are still favoured by bowl skaters for their smooth riding and grooves which lock into the edge of a pool or bowl every time.

    • @weekmill1684
      @weekmill1684 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people just buy them to protect their Graphic when they're doing like lip & Board slides

    • @dogerine
      @dogerine 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      they also protect the graphics and the bottom side of your board if you care about them

    • @rickh3714
      @rickh3714 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Back when people wanted a cool board to last cos they had better things to do than unnecessarily replacing boards every 4 mths! Plus smooth on slides coping etc. Inverts and handplants were more popular in the early 80's and these helped! Gloves/wrist guards also worn back then. Stopped the leather slipping when doing these plants.

  • @GuitarGod1512
    @GuitarGod1512 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    What independent trucks were they? Were wondering if my 149's would fit with an old school skateboard (maybe with risers)

    • @stefanvanjaarsveld7589
      @stefanvanjaarsveld7589 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      GuitarGod1512 Prob not a 9,5 , i would say you need at least about 169s, but some boards are more narrow at the truck ends. So have a look at the shape. Skateboard Warehouse has a recommended truck size for some boards, maybe go check that out.

    how long to rails usally last

    • @BIGBLUETIGER96
      @BIGBLUETIGER96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on how thick the rail is, rib bones are like an inch while pig rails are a half inch. Pig rails wear out even on steel coping or handrails while rib bones dont yet pig rails slide better but don't last as long but it of course also depends on how often you do tricks involving the rails.

    • @BIGBLUETIGER96
      @BIGBLUETIGER96 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** well if you love doing slide and rolls all the time on transition especially on pool coping it wont take long for pig rails to die in less than a few days, but it really depends how often u use the rails in ur tricks

Those orange things are plastic sliders so that the coping or pool ledge will not mess up or eat up your board. Steve still enjoy using those old school hardware on his new school setup.
