Wow, that made me cry. I'm so proud of him for using his platform to draw attention to some of the less savoury aspects on the fashion industry. So many industries are regulated and yet with fashion people have just come to accept these things as a standard. It really needs to change and I hope James's speech provokes some serious thought amongst other leaders in the industry. Furthermore I hope that thought then morphs into positive action and change. People are not commodities and they ought to be valued. When money and prestige take precedence over human value, it is a sorry state of affairs.
Here here. Celebrities killed my interest in Vogue and most fashion magazines. It's pandering to... I have no idea who it's pandering to. Bring back the models that are 18+, healthy looking and have personalities. Thanks for your words, James.
I'm surprised most fashion magazines are still being sold. I don't see anyone buying them. I also miss the womanly models from the 90's and before. The models today look like kids, even though they're in their 20's.
Agree. I miss the days of seeing the next new face on Vogue and watching their career grow and they got cover after cover and you learned their names. In this day Naomi, Linda, Cindy, Christy would barely have careers. There are no star making covers to be had.
I agree with you guys, but I'm afraid Vogue doesn't care about losing a bunch of fashion-admiring subscribers since they got hundreds of thousands new subscribers interested in celebrities. If I'm not mistaken, the issue with Kim Kardashian on the cover became the best-selling, and it says it all.
This was such a good topic and I wish he had time to talk about more of what's going on. It's so true that fashion has lost its fun. Nowadays you walk into a room and it's about hierarchy, the snobishness, etc. I really hope they change up the casting directors abusing the girls and system to their benefit. And it's about time they push diversity on every designer participating in a fashion week

I am a woman who is not in the fashion industry but loves fashion. A few years ago I picked up a top fashion magazine and opened it to beautifully done photos of obviously 13-14 year-old generically pretty girls who were supposed to entice me, a grown woman, to go out and buy certain products. I distinctly remember thinking "Really?!?", feeling a little creeped out, and I put the magazine down and have rarely picked one up since.
James, your passion for the industry comes across strongly and I want you to know that people like me understand what you are saying and completely support you. Too many industry people think we are stupid; that those of us out here in the Corn Belt don't know what is going on and they are wrong. The most beautiful thing about life in every aspect is it's diversity and it's past time that an industry that relies almost 100% on visual stimulation to embrace Diversity in all it's glory once again. Thank you for speaking out, James. And thank you BoF for allowing James' Voice to be heard.

This whole thing is not only in fashion but in music, art and many other creative industries. House discos in the 70's and 80's and even 90's were organically full of people of different kinds; white, black, latino, straight, gay whatever you wanted was there and everybody were respectful. DJ's were playing House, Disco, Electro etc' and you'd never knew what would be played but you came for the musical ride.
What do we have today? bullshit clubs with mostly horrendous DJ's with nothing unique to offer and a crowd of wanna be VIP idiots. Same goes for the Art scene, all is contemporary bullshit with all artists looking the same, talking the same and basically a copy paste of each other. Why would the fashion industry be any different. No risk taking, no boundaries are being pushed, sales sales sales nothing else really matters most of the time. The amount of people that remain true to their own style (like Yohji for example) is at minimum. Diversity should be organic, and not enforced just to delete it from the list. Celebrity culture should be demolished, and creativity should be celebrated and not popularity.
I hate forced diversity. There's no authenticity to it. Also having a check list of races and sexualities that need to be involved is slimy and disgusting. I don't care about diversity. I care about meritocracy. If the diversity is organic because the people are there for their talent and merits, then I'm fine with that. Talent has to be #1.
That's bullshit. This not forced diversity. It is saying that our world is not made up of one kind of people. If you are thinking that it's forced you are basically saying that if you have choice then you want only one kind of person (white, right?) and if you choose someone else then you are being made to do so. Talent? Joan Smalls is not talented? Jourdan Dunn is not talented? Really? It's this kind of attitude that keeps the BS intact and thriving.
If he had just said music instead of fashion, it would have been right on the head, I have worked in music and yes the same dynamic is there and so disgusting.
This was amazing. I am graduating now in Fashion Design, and I really want a career in Fashion Journalism, and this was what kept me from persuing a career in Fashion in the first place. All the petiness and bullying, It never felt like a caring, human place. But it feels like something's changing and I'm happy for people like you and people who are brave enough to share their broken hearts so something can be done about it and this business can hope be a more humanly area one day. You are one beautiful soul!
Very touchu message, I cried plenty when I was laid off from my job, and have done the best , and not being recognized for what I did on the job :(
I just want to give James Scully the biggest hug. Despite having always been completely drawn into the beautiful world of fashion, I have shied away from it at the thought that I was `too nice` and incapable of projecting the illusion of confidence to build a successful career in this industry. It seems there`s more work to be done that I/we can take part in.

there is a new wave of the it girl. your parents have to be famous or rich. state your family net worth on your resume. who you know you your genetic connection. the person you know are the a list or d list celebrity. thats the new trend.
I have so much respect for this man for speaking out about the modeling industry. A few models of the now like blanca Padilla and Ashley graham spoke about the harsh ways they were treated by the industry but I didn't see the depth of how serious the issue is until now. Leonie Anderson even encouraged girls going into the industry npto be thick skinned, and not to start at a hound age because, she said in her Experience a lot of girls are sexualized too young or suffer anxiety due to the comments about their body. Aldo a lot of m!models have spoken out about the racism in the Industry.
Thank you James Scully, this is eye-opening for someone who's working in the fashoin industry. Everyone who's watching, let's make a difference. We have the power to make this industry a positive.

All he is saying about the fashion industry is 100% true. Good for him for exposing these cruel people. Anna Wintour is also part of the problem too. It’s now about power and massive, fragile egos. I’ve worked with beautiful teenage girls who are clearly anorexic. It always broke my heart and I would tell the agencies to help these girls.

I did work experience in a UK MAJOR BIG modelling agency and although I didn't see anyone getting treated badly, what I saw put me off having a career in the industry. The way they treated me and the way I saw some of the girls look... as well as just being bored of how everyone looked similar too... it just wasn't as fun and exciting as I thought it would be, it was down right stale as hell. I could understand if of was accounting but this was FASHION.
15:30 YUP! I won't say their names but I immediately noticed several of my favorite models suddenly were looking gaunt and it was to fit those measurements. It's ridiculous these girls/women are already 5'11 and size 0-2's. Forcing 2 inches off waist & hip measurements is absolutely unrecognizable when they're already so svelte. I felt so sorry, I'm glad that they luckily are all alive.

I started to fall I nlovewith the I dustry because it did bring light to my world. It excited me, I felt happy and being part of it would be a dream come true.I watched coco Chanel the movie and I ddidnt understand where all of that drive, that I inspiration, that vision went.everything seems so straight forward now or the same. The ability the models had to inspire people with their walks, the feel rush of excitement or goosebumps when a model would walk, where did it go? I still have hope, alot of hope for the future. Maybe I could be one of the girls to change the industry, who knows. I just want the joyful bright runways and editorials to come back, instead of what there is now. Also I do agree that a lot of celebs are invading the fashion industry.
I hear what Mr. Scully addresses and it's quite compelling. But, fashion being fantasy, is there a place for diversity in it? I say yes but for those of us who consume and support fashion houses we need to send a message with our pocket books. They cannot thrive or survive without our financial support. If designers refuse to get with the times and include diversity in their representation of a fantasy world then they need to be left behind. We need to support those designers who do include diversity to the extent that it feels like a natural reflection of today's society. Fashionistas know who which designers get it and which ones don't. Let's start pressuring them to get with the times.

Is the fashion industry the ultimate example of "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely"? I'm stunned by the amount of cruelty that these people do to other human beings! I have often wondered whether or not some of those in fashion hate women based on the amount of energy expended in making sure that little girls with no hips, breast, or behinds are exalted and idolized and the moment that they gain an inch due to puberty they are considered undesirable because now they are starting to look like women instead of boyish girls. WHO are these people who commit, what I consider, emotional crimes and atrocities against these models? Who are they that they can do and say these cruel things to people (who are in some cases children) without thought or care? What happened to these stylist and designers in their childhoods and upbringing that can create despicable human beings? If they were bullied as children and teenagers (and I imagine there were a lot that were) how can they then turn around and create atmospheres of the WORST kind of intimidation and bullying? The fashion industry is like a high school gang of bullies who have decided to create a world in which they can act out their most cruelest, heartless feelings on other human beings. Except...you are not children! If you have even an ounce of humanity, empathy, sympathy, feelings you cannot possibly become the kind of person that could and would do this to someone else and then go home and sleep well. Where did the extreme racism come from? Haven't any of them grown up in situations in which they were excluded either based on sexuality or individuality? How then, if you have experienced that, can you then turn around and perpetuate the same outrageous behavior of exclusivity on someone else? Madia and Rami (the stylist with some of the worst reputations) sound like sadist! Everyone turned a blind eye to this? Bravo, Mr. Scully, Bravo. You have the courage and audacity to speak out and expose vermin. One can only wish that it starts a landslide of change.
