Lumix Gh5 Low Light Anamorphic 4K 50p

  • Anamorphic test with one of my anamorphic scopes in Cine-D 4k 4:3 50p 8 bit on a sunday during sunset, all shot within 1,5 hour. No real story intended and nothing really planned out. I let friends decide to do whatever they wanted as long as I could shoot, for me it beats shooting trees and branches for testing.
    Wanted to test the gh5's white balance and find out how it reacts with different street lightning situations and how it would grade in post. Still have trouble dialing correct WB K values by eye on the fly.
    There's some vignette because of a combination of the temp DIY clamp, lens potrusion and a temp filterholder. Not the most ideal combination, but a temporary solution.
    Some shots are with a LED but most without. The darkest shots at the end were shot without a LED at 1600 ISO, but could've used 3200 instead, it's a bit underexposed. Stil testing out what works and what doesn't. Trial and error.
    Gimbal: Defy g2x
    LED: Yongnuo YN360 LED
    For one shot I used the SLR magic achromatic diopter +0.33

    You are killing it with these tests! I love it. I don't mind the distortions and vignetting. I like the imperfections. It adds to the anamorphic look.

      Thanks Byron. So do I, although I still need additional testing different taking lenses with less distortion I keep coming back to the non ais 50mm Nikkor, it has some surreal 3d pop to it.

    Hi ichidomo, fantastic video.
    I'm making the leap into anamorphics with my GH5 and found a 16H, and nikkor 50/f2 (non ai, converted to EF) to use with EF metabones ultra .71 speed booster. Two questions.
    1 - You mentioned your 8-Z has a sharpness mod - does this just mean internal realignment, or is there a resource where I could find out more?
    2 - I also grabbed a 58mm helios on a friend's recommendation. Would that eliminate some of the vignetting and distortion?
    Thanks!

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Alex Clark thank you. :)
      The sharpness mod means you'd have to open the lens and realign the front element. But only do it if it's necessary. Tito Ferradans has a tutorial on the basics. I used a slightly different method but the basic principals are the same.
      Helios has some nice vintage character on it's own and a lot of anamorphic shooters use this as a taking lens. I have 4 different models and while they do add some character I prefer the old nikkors instead. Helios is known for their barreldistortion and swirly bokeh, the scope will only enhance it's character, it's a matter of taste actually. It's all still experimenting when it comes to DIY anamorphics. :)

      I used the Nippon Kogaku auto H 50mm f2 as the taking lens. The 3d pop is a trait from this lens, besides colorgrading I didn't do anything to the footage to enhance the pop.

    how does the GH5 + Nikon speedbooster + Nippon Kogaku + Kowa 8z balance on the DEFY g2X ? shouldn't that setup be above the 3.5lbs weight limit ?
    Would u recommend the Helios 44-2?

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Hikari Frozen
      I didn't weigh it actually but I think I'm just under that weight limit most of the time. I stripped the kowa from it's collar. But even with the sigma 18-35 and var diopter I'm just above the weight limit but it still holds quite good actually.
      I would recommend the helios 44-2, lovely bokeh.

    Were you using IBIS along with the gimbal? The shot at 0:40 has a little bit of up and down bounce to it. Do you know what caused it?

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Kin Kwan
      Hi Kin thank you. I was using IBIS, the bump in the shot was due to the LED wand I mounted on the gimbal, the LED is pretty long and off balanced the weight distribution. In that shot I held the gimbal with one hand while tweaking the LED settings.

      I use several scopes, the scope in this video was the kowa 8z. I’m personally not a fan of the Sirui lenses but I can see the appeal since it’s a simpler and cheaper way of starting out with scopes. DIY scope adaption yields much better results but it takes more time and patience to make it work.

    Super mooi gedaan man, echt heel inspirerend! Ik heb een vraagje omtrent 4k camera's. Ik ben van plan om een nieuwe camera te kopen alleen vind ik het super lastig welke ik moet kopen. Ik gebruik de camera voornamelijk voor docu's/reportages/human interest en daarnaast ga ik nu ook beginnen met het maken van after movies (clubs/festivals). Mijn budget op dit moment is rond de 2500. Zelf zat ik te denken aan de Sony a6500 of de GH5. Ik neig misschien toch iets meer naar de GH5 alleen vraag ik mij af hoed goed de camera functioneert in omstandigheden met weinig/ongecontroleerd licht aangezien ik dus ook in clubs moet filmen. Wat zou u mij adviseren (lens en/of andere bijkomende gear)?

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nick
      Hey Nick. Elke camera heeft voor en nadelen. Waar de een uitblinkt kan weer de zwakte zijn van een andere. Ik heb geen ervaring met de a6500 dus heb geen first hand experience tussen beiden. Wat ik wel zo lees her en der is dat de a6500 oververhit bij het continu filmen in 4k en dat het menu niet lekker werkt. Wel is de a6500 iets beter in lowlight. Maar ik heb zelfs met de gh4 aftermovies gemaakt in donkere clubs op een redelijk laag iso, had een gekleurde LED wand. Ik vind de gh series zo lekker om mee te werken, dus mijn mening zal enigszins gekleurd zijn. De gh5 functioneert prima in low light zoals je hierboven ziet, zolang je maar niet verwacht dat ie in het donker kan kijken, het is geen nachtkijker, maar met een simpele LED heb je meer dan genoeg licht. Wat je met je ogen ziet kan je filmen, de a6500 kan in het donker kijken zonder LED. Maar zelf een peperdure RED moet je zorgen voor redelijk licht, dus als je zorgt dat je een snelle lens hebt icm een LED zit je safe. De betrouwbaarheid van de gh5 is zonder meer erg fijn, dual slot kaarten zodat je zeker weet dat je alle shots hebt. 10 bit of 4k 60p zijn functies die de sony niet heeft en voor mij wel doorslaggevend zijn. De kleuren en de sensor van de gh5 zijn tevens beter en minder video-ish naar mijn mening. Wat ik je aanraad is om beide camera's een keer te huren om zelf erachter te komen waar je voorkeur ligt.

    • @amvjc2
      @amvjc2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ichidomo Heel erg bedankt voor uw uitgebreide antwoord, dit heeft mij erg geholpen! Ik denk dat ik de camera's dan een keertje ga huren al ben ik toch wel zo goed als verkocht, GH5 it is. Welke lens zou u mij adviseren (budget rond de 2600 voor body+lens)

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nick
      Qua lens hang het ervan af van je voorkeur en van welke focal lenght je houdt. Elke lens heeft zijn eigen karakter. Ik heb zelf alleen maar manuele lenzen. Moderne kit lenzen hebben allemaal een fly by wire focus (google) systeem mocht je handmatig willen focussen en dat werkt voor mij niet prettig omdat je nooit op hetzelfde focus punt zit wanneet je moet herfocussen indien een onderwerp beweegt. Ik gebruik ook geen autofocus. Voor 600 kan je een 2e hands sigma art 18-35 halen maar dan mis je wel een speedbooster. En alleen de nikon mount zou je dan kunnen gebruiken zonder speedbooster om de aperture handmatig te kunnen instellen met een simpele adapter, ik heb dit zelf ook, kan het mounten op een speedbooster of op een dummy adapter (2 lenzen in 1) . Ik zou wel minimaal voor een f1.8 lens gaan als je in het donker wil gaan filmen. Je zou ook een goedkopere speedbooster kunnen aanschaffen, zhongyi lens turbo II in EF mount. Met een simpele adapter kan je vrijwel elke lens mounten, van oude vintage lenzen tot moderne. Keuzes zijn eindeloos en divers dus ook hier geldt wat jouw voorkeuren zijn, focal lenght, autofocus, manueel, zoom, prime, lichsterkte. Houd er wel rekening mee dat je voor overdag een variabele ND nodig hebt om in 180 graden shutter angle te kunnen filmen. Als je nog vragen hebt hoor ik dat graag.

    • @amvjc2
      @amvjc2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ichidomo nogmaals erg bedankt dat u mij zo helpt, dat is echt helemaal top! Welke adapter gebruikt om de sigma 18-35 nikon te mouten? En wat bedoelt u met 2 in 1? Ik zelf gebruik ook zo goed als alleen manual focus. Toch zou ik willen weten hoe u vind dat de autofocus werkt op bijv een stabilisator? Sorry ik ben nog maar een beginnende filmer vandaar dat ik nog niet alles helemaal snap.

    Hi! I love this. Beautiful work. I love it so much that I went and purchased the same lens on eBay, but suddenly I'm wondering what adapter you used for the GH5. I keep reading that non-AI lenses are not compatible with modern Nikons, so does that mean that the non-AI lens won't mount on a speed booster? Is there any way you could share the taking lens to adaptor mount info I would be super grateful! I've got a bunch of anamorphic and am trying to find the right combo and what you have here, WOW. Incredible. BTW what gimbal did you use? I'm not on Facebook and can't check there. Sorry for all the questions. Again, GREAT work!

      Hey Scott thank you for the kind words. I'm using the metabones speedbooster with the clickless aperture ring. It's compatible with almost most non-AI and AI AIS nikkors with exception of maybe 2 lenses made in the last 75 years or so. I prefer them over canon, even the aperture of my sigma 18-35 nikon is manual and clickless.

      Runie Kamsin you'll have to try your luck anywhere since they don't make these anymore, this one is between 30/40 years old. Try ebay, secondhandstores, fleamarkets etc.

    Beautiful. Do you have a single focus solution as well (Rectilux, rangefinder...) ?

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Julien Lacombe
      Thank you. I don't own a rectilux (yet). The rangefinder is not on my list since it's too soft.

    • @leojames2050
      @leojames2050 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ichidomo Why do you think it's to soft?

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Leo James
      According to tests I've see the rangefinder is soft wide open at fast apertures with a lot of CA and blooming.

    Is it only me or does anybody see kind a little distortion at right and the left ends of the frame..

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +satish kumar chimmili
      The distortion is part of the anamorphic character when you are on the widest end. Even high end anamorphic cine primes have this trait.

      Compared to the gh4 the skintones are much better. Don't have vlog yet so can't compare with that but colors are much better out of the box. :)

    Is it possible to even get a film look with a digital camera without resorting to slo-mo?

    • @ichidomo
      @ichidomo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duke Sweden I'm not resorting to slo-mo in order to mimic anything. I just like slomotion footage. A matter of personal taste. When it comes to the film-look much has been debated already, in the end it's an art form, digital or film, it doesn't matter :)
