Marina isn't just black by skin color, she's also coded as a black woman, and this kind of exchange is common for that demo. When insulting a woman like her in a subtle or cultural norm style way, she'll retort with an earnest energy that fully diffuses the situation and frustrates the person trying to get at her. It's why Marina interrupts on the "It's getting late" line, saying she can do it all day. Then Pearl sees that skill and admires it with the next line because it compliments her brash personality. I really love this pair.

In love with Marina and Shiver's part- A lot of people think Marina doesn't get that Shiver is being passive aggressive, but I don't think that's the case (she's smart, and they're literally having a rap battle). The most savage way to deflect passive aggression is by taking it as a genuine compliment. If the subtle jabs don't get under your skin, you've won. (And Marina's lines, while far sweeter, are also a bit passive aggressive: "I can learn so much from your style"? True, and softened by the fact Marina most likely genuinely likes Deep Cut - but she never said Shiver's style was better. Or even good.)
Marina sings the first line with Shiver's inflection so I think she's mocking Shiver's singing style. "I *love* your vibe" can also be like a mean-girl bitchy thing to say too

Once Shiver tries to tell her to leave, Marina's line is clearly a flex: "I could go on like this all night long". Marina is being just as mean but better. It's even better because unlike the other three, she does it in a way that really gets under Shiver's skin/deflects all her comments until she straight-up tells her to leave, finally giving up the nice facade. On the other side, while Frye is more ruder and makes better jabs, Pearl is above it, even allowing a whole verse to her girl instead of trying to get at Frye. She's a star and she knows it. SHE has nothing to prove and can do whatever she wants (esp important because of the context of the song). This makes Shiver and Frye petty and rude in general while OTH is above them and looks better in general. We know Deep Cut LOVE their publicity stunts and aren't above using drama for clout so they made themselves look bad on purpose. There's a whole logic to it that fits pretty well with the characters!

My favorite part about this song is how Off the Hook is schooling Fire & Ice, literally teaching them how it's done. Starting with Pearl v Frye Pearl opens slow and simply, taunting Frye into losing her temper. Frye's a great performer, but lacks presence, and Pearl is great at getting a reaction. By cutting her off, she forces Frye to be more aggressive and more vocally forward, which Pearl acquiesces to, going at Frye's pace, matching the rhythm of the song like Frye does, fishing for the Marina insult with the "where's your buddy". Then, when fry does try and take a pot-shot, Pearl uses the advantage to hype Marina up with the fastest and hardest line in the song, baiting one more insult to transition to the chorus (sung by Marina primarily) with even more hype. Pearl goes through the entire verse showcasing how Frye is out of her league, while demonstrating how to set up a killer song: play along, hype yourself up, and target you attacks specifically to get the best reaction. You come across as more confident and more competent through this. Then we get to Shiver v Marina In contrast to Pearl, Shiver starts horribly. She tries to lean into her country gimmick by passive-aggressively mocking Marina while making fun of her singing style, but does so in such a way that both sounds terrible and makes her seem less aggressive. In a rap battle. Again, terrible start. Marina takes advantage of this by keeping the vibes going and showing off at the same time, countering the passive-aggressive lines with her own, more subtle ones, all while singing the same tune in her usual, inkredible, fashion. As such, she not only sounds better, and states she can do whatever Shiver does, but better, she also retroactively has Shiver making a fool of herself, which Shiver doubles down on by telling Marina to stop copying her, as Marina had baited her to do. Marina mostly obliges, by singing a more complex and auditorially interesting line than Shiver's more by-the-beat verse, flourishing her lines with a soulful high note before a syncopated stop at the end, all while maintaining that passive aggressive style (it also functions as a "yeah, I am better at this than you are" in conjunction with the "stop copying me" line). The moment Shiver says she's heard enough, referencing the time while also mocking Marina's long-winded verses (finally using that passive aggressive style to her advantage), Marina drops the facade, sounding stronger and directly telling Shiver that she ain't done, only for Pearl to interject with a "had enough yet?" simultaneously mocking Shiver's earlier line about it getting late, playing to her attention-seeking persona and heavy boasting, and disengaging Marina, which gives the impression that Marina was holding back the whole time and was about to let loose on a Shiver. This also reframes Shiver's earlier line as her giving up. Basically, Shiver got brutalized in this battle, and only has herself to blame. Meanwhile, Marina comes across as a genius to those who get it, and adorable to those who don't. She couldn't have come out of the verse looking bad. Effectively, Off the Hook used this as both a means of maintaining their own hype, while simultaneously needling at the new kid's flaws, and following with examples of how to effectively use their own styles, plus how to effectively rap battle. It also shows Off the Hook's skill both as a team and individually. Pearl can play the hypeman and abrasive teacher that she excels at, while Marina can be passive and throw ruthless counterattacks while still coming across as sweet. As a team, they run the conversation, with Pearl leading the tone, even when she's off the mic, and serving as the bridge to Marina, who dominates the song via her constant presence in the chorus and instrumentals. Everyone's mind is on them while Shiver and Frye don't even interact. Frye refuses to mention Shiver, even when brought up, while Shiver's verse is entirely focused on (unsuccessfully) dissing Marina. They come across as disoriented and isolated compared to their opponents, who work as well together as a married couple (which they might as well be). There's a reason everyone says Off the Hook wins in a landslide.
Shiver and Frye just went full-on gangster rap. I really like the idea that Big Man is constantly having to rope them in because they get dangerously close to doing things that probably shouldn’t be broadcasted over a staple news network. Kinda matches how casual they are with their lines on the Splatcast - the other idols were smart enough to stay quiet about their role in the story modes, but Deep Cut just kinda dropped the bombshell that not only do they personally know the Squid Sisters, Marie is now their boss out of nowhere.

Too many people think that Marina is just being nice or oblivious. If you listen to the lyrics AND the singing, you can see why this isn't true. Listen and hear that Marina's first verse uses almost the exact same notes as Shiver's. Her lyrics say "I love your vibe. I can learn so much from your style." Marina is being sarcastic and showing that she can sing something better than Shiver can. That's why Shiver then says "Octo see, octo do." She's saying Marina is just copying her and isn't original. Then in Marina's 2nd verse, she says "Thanks to your notes, I'll find my groove!" This part is multi-layered and honestly impressive. On the surface it sounds like she's genuinely thanking Shiver for the feedback and will improve. In reality, "your notes" refers to Shiver's music notes in her 2nd verse, and "my groove" refers to how Marina doesn't copy Shiver this time. She builds off what Shiver sung and shows that she does have her own skill and originality. Marina's 3rd verse is most obvious. She's saying that she can sing like this all night long, implying that Shiver cannot. This is why Pearl concludes with "Had enough yet?" It's because Marina was fighting back the whole time. This is Marina's turf! She ain't no pushover!

It's funny when you look at the idols. The squid sisters are deadly experienced agents trained by captain cuttlefish that have a song with healing powers. I like how Shiver is trying to make her mad but Marina is such a godsend and doesn't get the drill.
Context: Shiver has a stereotypical Kyoto personality where they use a lot back handed compliments and passive aggression. (Or at least that’s how her dialogue is written in Japanese)
It’s not really working on Marina, who’s very earnest. Pretty fun dynamic there.
I really like the idea that Marina is well aware of this and intentionally takes it as genuine compliments just to frustrate Shiver

Marina isn't just black by skin color, she's also coded as a black woman, and this kind of exchange is common for that demo. When insulting a woman like her in a subtle or cultural norm style way, she'll retort with an earnest energy that fully diffuses the situation and frustrates the person trying to get at her. It's why Marina interrupts on the "It's getting late" line, saying she can do it all day. Then Pearl sees that skill and admires it with the next line because it compliments her brash personality. I really love this pair.

A lot of people think Marina doesn't get that Shiver is being passive aggressive, but I don't think that's the case (she's smart, and they're literally having a rap battle).
The most savage way to deflect passive aggression is by taking it as a genuine compliment. If the subtle jabs don't get under your skin, you've won.
(And Marina's lines, while far sweeter, are also a bit passive aggressive: "I can learn so much from your style"? True, and softened by the fact Marina most likely genuinely likes Deep Cut - but she never said Shiver's style was better. Or even good.)
Marina sings the first line with Shiver's inflection so I think she's mocking Shiver's singing style. "I *love* your vibe" can also be like a mean-girl bitchy thing to say too

Marina's next line is just as aggressively kind: "Glad you approve, your praise has left me moved". She's literally going "aw gee THANK you, aren't you the sweetest thing? Bless your heart" and then adding that Shiver is only fueling her, implying that she should give up now. Once Shiver tries to tell her to leave, Marina's line is clearly a flex: "I could go on like this all night long".
Marina is being just as mean but better. She's more subtle in a stereotypical mean girl way. She knows what's going on and isn't taking it. It's even better because unlike the other three, she does it in a way that really gets under Shiver's skin/deflects all her comments until she straight-up tells her to leave, finally giving up the nice facade. Marina isn't a genius for nothing and Pearl was damn right to acknowledge it. She destroyed Shiver in a way that won't allow her to be angry.
On the other side, while Frye is more ruder and makes better jabs, Pearl is above it, even allowing a whole verse to her girl instead of trying to get at Frye. She's a star and she knows it. SHE has nothing to prove and can do whatever she wants (esp important because of the context of the song).
This makes Shiver and Frye petty and rude in general while OTH is above them and looks better in general. We know Deep Cut LOVE their publicity stunts and aren't above using drama for clout so they made themselves look bad on purpose. There's a whole logic to it that fits pretty well with the characters!

My favorite part about this song is how Off the Hook is schooling Fire & Ice, literally teaching them how it's done.
Starting with Pearl v Frye
Pearl opens slow and simply, taunting Frye into losing her temper. Frye's a great performer, but lacks presence, and Pearl is great at getting a reaction. By cutting her off, she forces Frye to be more aggressive and more vocally forward, which Pearl acquiesces to, going at Frye's pace, matching the rhythm of the song like Frye does, fishing for the Marina insult with the "where's your buddy". Then, when fry does try and take a pot-shot, Pearl uses the advantage to hype Marina up with the fastest and hardest line in the song, baiting one more insult to transition to the chorus (sung by Marina primarily) with even more hype.
Pearl goes through the entire verse showcasing how Frye is out of her league, while demonstrating how to set up a killer song: play along, hype yourself up, and target you attacks specifically to get the best reaction. You come across as more confident and more competent through this.
Then we get to Shiver v Marina In contrast to Pearl, Shiver starts horribly.
She tries to lean into her country gimmick by passive-aggressively mocking Marina while making fun of her singing style, but does so in such a way that both sounds terrible and makes her seem less aggressive. In a rap battle. Again, terrible start. Marina takes advantage of this by keeping the vibes going and showing off at the same time, countering the passive-aggressive lines with her own, more subtle ones, all while singing the same tune in her usual, inkredible, fashion. As such, she not only sounds better, and states she can do whatever Shiver does, but better, she also retroactively has Shiver making a fool of herself, which Shiver doubles down on by telling Marina to stop copying her, as Marina had baited her to do. Marina mostly obliges, by singing a more complex and auditorially interesting line than Shiver's more by-the-beat verse, flourishing her lines with a soulful high note before a syncopated stop at the end, all while maintaining that passive aggressive style (it also functions as a "yeah, I am better at this than you are" in conjunction with the "stop copying me" line). The moment Shiver says she's heard enough, referencing the time while also mocking Marina's long-winded verses (finally using that passive aggressive style to her advantage), Marina drops the facade, sounding stronger and directly telling Shiver that she ain't done, only for Pearl to interject with a "had enough yet?" simultaneously mocking Shiver's earlier line about it getting late, playing to her attention-seeking persona and heavy boasting, and disengaging Marina, which gives the impression that Marina was holding back the whole time and was about to let loose on a Shiver. This also reframes Shiver's earlier line as her giving up.
Basically, Shiver got brutalized in this battle, and only has herself to blame. Meanwhile, Marina comes across as a genius to those who get it, and adorable to those who don't. She couldn't have come out of the verse looking bad.
Effectively, Off the Hook used this as both a means of maintaining their own hype, while simultaneously needling at the new kid's flaws, and following with examples of how to effectively use their own styles, plus how to effectively rap battle.
It also shows Off the Hook's skill both as a team and individually. Pearl can play the hypeman and abrasive teacher that she excels at, while Marina can be passive and throw ruthless counterattacks while still coming across as sweet. As a team, they run the conversation, with Pearl leading the tone, even when she's off the mic, and serving as the bridge to Marina, who dominates the song via her constant presence in the chorus and instrumentals. Everyone's mind is on them while Shiver and Frye don't even interact. Frye refuses to mention Shiver, even when brought up, while Shiver's verse is entirely focused on (unsuccessfully) dissing Marina. They come across as disoriented and isolated compared to their opponents, who work as well together as a married couple (which they might as well be).
There's a reason everyone says Off the Hook wins in a landslide.

Shiver and Frye just went full-on gangster rap. I really like the idea that Big Man is constantly having to rope them in because they get dangerously close to doing things that probably shouldn’t be broadcasted over a staple news network. Kinda matches how casual they are with their lines on the Splatcast - the other idols were smart enough to stay quiet about their role in the story modes, but Deep Cut just kinda dropped the bombshell that not only do they personally know the Squid Sisters, Marie is now their boss out of nowhere.

Which she even did in the interview. She called them stuck-up and shy/awkward for it while she herself is way too casual about it (though she does seem to keep in her rougher edges in general)

Too many people think that Marina is just being nice or oblivious. If you listen to the lyrics AND the singing, you can see why this isn't true.
Listen and hear that Marina's first verse uses almost the exact same notes as Shiver's. Her lyrics say "I love your vibe. I can learn so much from your style." Marina is being sarcastic and showing that she can sing something better than Shiver can.
That's why Shiver then says "Octo see, octo do." She's saying Marina is just copying her and isn't original. Then in Marina's 2nd verse, she says "Thanks to your notes, I'll find my groove!" This part is multi-layered and honestly impressive. On the surface it sounds like she's genuinely thanking Shiver for the feedback and will improve. In reality, "your notes" refers to Shiver's music notes in her 2nd verse, and "my groove" refers to how Marina doesn't copy Shiver this time. She builds off what Shiver sung and shows that she does have her own skill and originality.
Marina's 3rd verse is most obvious. She's saying that she can sing like this all night long, implying that Shiver cannot.
This is why Pearl concludes with "Had enough yet?" It's because Marina was fighting back the whole time. This is Marina's turf! She ain't no pushover!
also, the way she says “i can learn so much from your style” can also imply a kind of ‘steer clear’ vibe. like she’s saying shiver’s whole gig sucks and she could really learn the easy way not to make that same mistake. love it lmaooo

While Shiver is passive aggressive, Marina is shutting her down by pretending to take them as compliments. Additionally, she's being sarcastic, which is shown through the tone of singing (same tone as Shiver's) and the way the subtitles are emphasized. "You're *far* too kind. I *love* your vibe. I could learn *so much* from your style." She also says that she can go on all night long, implying that Shiver can't.

This song splits the other two Deep Cut members away from Big Man and gives them their own band name, but unlike Big Man, they still use their names.
