When I was a senior in high school in 79, Blackfoot, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, Boston, Eagles, Yes, Rush, Peter Frampton, Led Zeppelin and many other great bands were all on the radio 24/ 7. So glad I grew up back then.
The band was formed in 1969 and was named Hammer. During the early spring of the same year, the band, after learning of another band on the West Coast named Hammer, decided to change their name to Blackfoot to represent the American Indian heritage of its members:[3] Jakson Spires (from Oklahoma) had a Cheyenne/French father and a Cherokee mother;[4] Rickey Medlocke's father was Lakota Sioux[5] and Blackfoot Indian, and his mother's side is Creek/Cherokee, Scottish and Irish; Greg "Two Wolf" Walker is part Eastern (Muskogee) Creek, a tribe recognized by the state of Florida, but not federally. Charlie Hargrett [6] was the only white man of the original, classic line-up. Although they are considered a "southern rock band", they have a great native american flavor to their songs in the drums and Ricky Medlockes vocals. wiki
I was 16 in 1977, so much great music back then. So happy to see the younger generation appreciate it. Blackfoot is right up there at the top. I love southern rock!!

Like all Southern Rock bands, their sound varied between hard songs and ballads, with elements of Blues, Country and Rock! Even the Allman Brothers had ties to Jacksonville and it's said that, Whipping Post, was written there!
The Allman Brothers definitely had a connection to Jacksonville they played at a local club call the comic book club before they started touring they did their first real concert at the Jacksonville coliseum and their last concert at the veterans arena...

"Cant You See" is simply incredible (Toy Caldwell, lead singer & guitar, won a purple heart in Vietnam with the Marines!). Also "Fire On The Mountain". Enjoy!

The "Dueling" guitar sound was popular with "Southern Rock" bands of the era. Allman Bros, Lynard Skynard, Blackfoot and others all had dual lead or lead/rhythm players that could play like demons together. You can instantly tell if you're listening to some Southern Rock from the 70's/80's by that sound.
I heard Dickey Betts say one time that the reason why/inspiration for Southern Rock bands to have 2 (or more) guitars was the twin fiddles in Bob Wills & the Texas Playboys. Can't say if that is true or not, but if you ever listen to any Bob Wills songs from the 40's and early 50's it is definitely similar to the intertwining play of Southern Rock guitars. They are from Jacksonville, Forida (just like Skynrd) The line up for this album was Ricky Medlocke - lead vocalist/lead guitarist, Charlie Hargett - Rhythm/Lead Guitar, Greg T. Walker - Bass, and Jackson Spires - Drums. So they are absolutely "Southern Rock" Rick Medlocke's Grand Father "Shorty" played the harmonica on the song "Train Train" that you enjoyed the other day.
It's even more interesting than that- Shorty was in the house band for one of those variety shows that used to be all the rage on network tv. He brought on Rickey to play Eukale in his band- on national TV- when he wasn't yet 10 yrs old. So, he was a seasoned veteran even before Blackfoot, or his first stint in Skynyrd. Jackson "thunderfoot" Spires was a monster of a drummer- and Charlie was a freakin beast on guitar.
Shorty was actually Ricky's grandfather. But, yes, he killed it on harmonica. My recommendations for next time are "Diary of a Workingman", "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", and "Wishing Well, " a cover of an old Free song.
I would say that train train was actually in earlier and bigger hit but yeah, both of them became iconic for blackfoot. And they were both off of the Same album, Blackfoot strikes.

And of course I also love Highway Song but yeah, I didn't hear it on the radio nearly as much. Although I did play the hell out of that Blackfoot Strikes album!

Blackfoot is from Jacksonville, Fl. The lead singer, Ricky Medlocke grew up on the Westside next door to my uncle. He was raised by his grandfather Shorty Medlocke, the harmonica player in Train Train. Ricky was the original drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd here in Jax way back before they were famous.
We absolutely loved this band when they came over to the UK as support to a few bands like April Wine and Molly Hatchet. They were back soon after headlining all those iconic venues like Hammersmith Odeon. Went down a storm every damn night. The live version of Highway song on record goes on much longer , recorded in England. When they played Reading Rock Festival there were Southern flags everywhere (just in support of their roots , non political). Great to see them on your channel 🙌🙌

Blackfoot wasn't as nationally known as Lynard Skynyrd or 38 Special but those that were really into southern rock knew who they were. Rickey Medlocke (vocals and guitar) is the only member I know. He was in Skynyrd for a time. They're from Jacksonville, Florida.
About ten years ago I had the distinct honor and pleasure of sitting in with former Blackfoot lead guitarist Charlie Hargrett in a couple of local rock shows here in central Florida. One of the nicest and personable celebrities I've ever met, he was still a monster on guitar in his mid 60's. Great reaction... there's a lot more to this band, check out 'Good Morning' from the Marauder album. It's where southern rock meets metal.
One of the best songs ever in my lifetime!!!!! Since I was a teenager I have always listened to it!!!!! I'm 53 now and it will never get old!!!!!!! Amazing to listen to on my way to my sons house in Texas!!! I live in central Alabama so it is about a 13 hour drive down some old 2 way highways

And right at this time stamp, Amber your mentioning the backing vocals and of course all the other wonderful stuff, but it made me think back to earlier in the reaction when you can see J just sitting there experiencing those backing vocals. J, you were putting your hands up in front of you and feeling the swell of it and I'm so glad you guys are checking out this kind of music. This meant so much to me in junior high and high school, I can't tell you how much. Even after all these decades I still feel the emotion from it. And Amber you were talking about it was hard and authentic and that is a really apt description. Another one in that direction from this Blackfoot Strikes album talks about life on the Indian res, although once again it could apply to anything, and it's called Wishing Well. It got some radio play but it wasn't as big of a hit as the other two, but this whole album is fire really, but Wishing Well is one that I think you guys would be really moved by for sure.
Wishing Well is actually a cover song. It was originally done by the band Free on their last album before Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke left to form Bad Company.

I just bought the album in junior high and played it over and over and over again and then later I bought that Lynyrd Skynyrd album from shortly after the plane crash called first and last and it's got Rickey medlocke singing preacher's daughter and white. And maybe one other and I just I don't know I was blown away by the synchronicity of all of it I thought it was awesome.
@Steve Dahlberg if you buy the cd Skynyrd's First The Complete Muscle Shoals Album, there's a song called You Run Around that Rick sings that has , in my opinion, a better ending solo than Freebird. On it, Allen and Gary both do killer solos.
@@timskelton2325 interesting. I'm not familiar with that and to be honest. I was in 9th grade when the plane crash happened and my first girlfriend ever was in 10th Grade and we were devastated. And back then people went to the movies all the time because there wasn't any sort of internet or TH-cam or anything and they managed to throw together a really quick biopic seven-minute thing that they replaced all the previews of Coming Attractions with which was a huge deal. And about the year after that I think it's when I bought that Lynyrd Skynyrd first and last which has Rickey medlocke on a lot of it and yes it's from those Muscle Shoals recordings for sure. And I guess they did release something that's more complete later so I've never even heard the song you're talking about at all. But yeah man all that shit was so good and I bet it's a fantastic song man.
Great reaction! Blackfoot was one of my favorites back in HS. The southern rock bands from Jacksonville were all friends and all interrelated. Blackfoot's Rickey Medlocke (the lead singer and lead guitarist) grew up in Jacksonville with Ronnie Van Zant and the Skynyrd guys. Rickey's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke, was one of the inspirations for Skynyrd's "Ballad of Curtis Loew". Rickey actually was in Skynyrd as the drummer for a while in the early 70's before the first Skynyrd album came out. He wrote or co-wrote 6 songs that they recorded in the Muscle Shoals studio. Thost tapes were rejected by the record companies, but later released after the Skynyrd plane crash first as a subset of the tapes on "Skynyrd's First... and Last" album, then in the 90's, the whole muscle shoals album was released. Some people claim that Rickey was "just a studio musician" for them at that time, but how many bands pay money to a studio to go in and record the songs written by the studio musician??? None. Early Skynyrd had Larry Junstrom (38 Special's bass player) as their bass player. After that, Greg T Walker (Blackfoot's bass player) was also in Skynyrd at the time when Rickey was drummer for Skynyrd. 38 Special's female backup singer is Dale Krantz Rossington, Gary Rossington's wife. Rickey came back to Skynyrd in the 90's as their lead guitarist, along with Hughie Thommason from the Outlaws. As your next Blackfoot reaction, I'd suggest Diary of a Workingman or Left Turn on a Red Light. Both are phenomenal.
The Outlaws is another southern rock band worth checking out. Check out “Green Grass and High Tides” and “Ghostriders in the Sky.” Molly Hatchet’s cover of “Dreams I’ll Never See” is another big guitar song. Great songs all.
This song appealed to a wide swath of America at the time: Truckers, Greyhound and other bus line drivers, and especially touring bands and their crews. This is essentially their Turn The Page.
Ever get the feelin that Ricky never got that Lynyrd Skynyrd out of his system? The end of that song calls back a little Freebird only bigger and much much better. He doesn't just string bend and noodle like the end of Freebird the man SHREDS and absolutely kills it, yet what song gets all the attention, go figure. Saw Blackfoot in Oct 2021 Columbia SC and they still have tons of energy. Was a great show, in a small venue and when they were done, they stepped off the stage, no security, and hung out with the crowd. Wish more bands did that

It doesn’t get any more southern than this. Skynyrd’s Free Bird with its blistering back and forth extended guitar outro most certainly laid out the blueprint for Highway Song. The Outlaws took note, too. Green Grass and High Tides, released a few years earlier, was their “Free Bird.” After a few verses (and tension building), the vocals take a back seat and all hell breaks loose to the finish line. Then you exhale.
So many great songs by Blackfoot....Wishing Well, Fly Away, and To hot to handle, are a couple more I'm sure you'll love. Go on down that rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed.

As mentioned below you need to check out "Green Grass and High Tides" by The Outlaws (also known as the guitar army, 3 guitarists) another song with a similar vibe and killer riffs. I started seeing Blackfoot in 1980 when I was 16. 43 years later and Ive met Ricky several times here in Fort Myers. Same guy just older. Still one of the best lead men in a band and has a big heart. Skynyrd did a hurricane Ian benefit down here and they sounded like they did 30 years earlier. Saw him in the airport the last month and he said hi, like a normal person.
Ricky Medlock is the lead singer and guitarist. He is in Lynard Skynard now. He is the one with snow white hair now. He was a founding member of Lynard Skynard back in the day.
Southern Rock fan here since 1973. I love seeing the music that I’ve loved for 50 years, being heard by young folks for the first time. Watching you two groovin’ to Highway Song and Train, Train made my day! Saw Blackfoot in early 80’s in Florida. To cram more into small arena, entire seating was standing room only. Nobody cared because we were all too busy rockin out to that incredible rock. You guys played the first two of (IMHO) their three best songs. The third (again IMHO) is Fox Chase and it’s my favorite. I love the country harmonica followed by the hard driving rock riff. Everyone instantly turned into an expert air guitarist. Who the hell needed a chair.
In the 80s the late great Ken Hensley was joining them after leaving his band Uriah Heep (he also played with WASP and Cinderella for some time). Please please do some Heep once, you didn't touch them at all but they were as importantant in the development of Hard Rock, Metal, and Prog as Zep, Purple, and Sabbath. If you like this song, do July Morning, where the brilliant Manfred Mann was joining Ken on a 10' psychedelic organ trip! One of the biggest annual festivals in Eastern Europe is named after this song. The Heep just released their 25th!!! album in 53 years and they are still as strong as any youngster prog metal band.
The lead guitar on this is Ricky Medlock. He was a founding member of Skynyrd but left before their 1st record deal. After the plane crash Ricky rejoined the band

I saw Skynyrd back about 20 years ago with Rickey Medlocke at a Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga TN,great show,he is a great performer with Skynyrd and Blackfoot.

Little trivia…Rickey Medlocke (guitar shredder and vocals) played with Lynryd Skynrd 71-72 and also from 1996 when they reformed with Ronnie’s little brother Johnny as their vocalist. Sounds so much like his brother.

Blackfoot's lead singer Rickey Meadlock played with Skynyrd before starting this band, and he's now back with Skynyrd playing lead guitar .

It's even more interesting than that- Shorty was in the house band for one of those variety shows that used to be all the rage on network tv. He brought on Rickey to play Eukale in his band- on national TV- when he wasn't yet 10 yrs old. So, he was a seasoned veteran even before Blackfoot, or his first stint in Skynyrd.
Jackson "thunderfoot" Spires was a monster of a drummer- and Charlie was a freakin beast on guitar.

My recommendations for next time are "Diary of a Workingman", "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme", and "Wishing Well, " a cover of an old Free song.

This was their radio hit. Great album.
I would say that train train was actually in earlier and bigger hit but yeah, both of them became iconic for blackfoot. And they were both off of the Same album, Blackfoot strikes.

And of course I also love Highway Song but yeah, I didn't hear it on the radio nearly as much. Although I did play the hell out of that Blackfoot Strikes album!

Blackfoot is from Jacksonville, Fl. The lead singer, Ricky Medlocke grew up on the Westside next door to my uncle. He was raised by his grandfather Shorty Medlocke, the harmonica player in Train Train. Ricky was the original drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd here in Jax way back before they were famous.
Blackfoot should be in the rock & roll hall of fame..
By 1979 I had already traveled all over... , & this is an awesome on the road song...
We absolutely loved this band when they came over to the UK as support to a few bands like April Wine and Molly Hatchet. They were back soon after headlining all those iconic venues like Hammersmith Odeon. Went down a storm every damn night. The live version of Highway song on record goes on much longer , recorded in England.
When they played Reading Rock Festival there were Southern flags everywhere (just in support of their roots , non political).

Blackfoot wasn't as nationally known as Lynard Skynyrd or 38 Special but those that were really into southern rock knew who they were.
Rickey Medlocke (vocals and guitar) is the only member I know. He was in Skynyrd for a time. They're from Jacksonville, Florida.
About ten years ago I had the distinct honor and pleasure of sitting in with former Blackfoot lead guitarist Charlie Hargrett in a couple of local rock shows here in central Florida. One of the nicest and personable celebrities I've ever met, he was still a monster on guitar in his mid 60's. Great reaction... there's a lot more to this band, check out 'Good Morning' from the Marauder album. It's where southern rock meets metal.
One of the best songs ever in my lifetime!!!!! Since I was a teenager I have always listened to it!!!!! I'm 53 now and it will never get old!!!!!!! Amazing to listen to on my way to my sons house in Texas!!! I live in central Alabama so it is about a 13 hour drive down some old 2 way highways

And right at this time stamp, Amber your mentioning the backing vocals and of course all the other wonderful stuff, but it made me think back to earlier in the reaction when you can see J just sitting there experiencing those backing vocals.
J, you were putting your hands up in front of you and feeling the swell of it and I'm so glad you guys are checking out this kind of music. This meant so much to me in junior high and high school, I can't tell you how much. Even after all these decades I still feel the emotion from it.
And Amber you were talking about it was hard and authentic and that is a really apt description. Another one in that direction from this Blackfoot Strikes album talks about life on the Indian res, although once again it could apply to anything, and it's called Wishing Well. It got some radio play but it wasn't as big of a hit as the other two, but this whole album is fire really, but Wishing Well is one that I think you guys would be really moved by for sure.
Wishing Well is actually a cover song. It was originally done by the band Free on their last album before Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke left to form Bad Company.
I was gonna say Wishing Well but went with Spendin' Cabbage.

I just bought the album in junior high and played it over and over and over again and then later I bought that Lynyrd Skynyrd album from shortly after the plane crash called first and last and it's got Rickey medlocke singing preacher's daughter and white. And maybe one other and I just I don't know I was blown away by the synchronicity of all of it I thought it was awesome.
@Steve Dahlberg if you buy the cd Skynyrd's First The Complete Muscle Shoals Album, there's a song called You Run Around that Rick sings that has , in my opinion, a better ending solo than Freebird. On it, Allen and Gary both do killer solos.
@@timskelton2325 interesting. I'm not familiar with that and to be honest. I was in 9th grade when the plane crash happened and my first girlfriend ever was in 10th Grade and we were devastated. And back then people went to the movies all the time because there wasn't any sort of internet or TH-cam or anything and they managed to throw together a really quick biopic seven-minute thing that they replaced all the previews of Coming Attractions with which was a huge deal.
And about the year after that I think it's when I bought that Lynyrd Skynyrd first and last which has Rickey medlocke on a lot of it and yes it's from those Muscle Shoals recordings for sure. And I guess they did release something that's more complete later so I've never even heard the song you're talking about at all. But yeah man all that shit was so good and I bet it's a fantastic song man.

Blackfoot was one of my favorites back in HS. The southern rock bands from Jacksonville were all friends and all interrelated.
Blackfoot's Rickey Medlocke (the lead singer and lead guitarist) grew up in Jacksonville with Ronnie Van Zant and the Skynyrd guys. Rickey's grandfather, Shorty Medlocke, was one of the inspirations for Skynyrd's "Ballad of Curtis Loew".
Rickey actually was in Skynyrd as the drummer for a while in the early 70's before the first Skynyrd album came out. He wrote or co-wrote 6 songs that they recorded in the Muscle Shoals studio. Thost tapes were rejected by the record companies, but later released after the Skynyrd plane crash first as a subset of the tapes on "Skynyrd's First... and Last" album, then in the 90's, the whole muscle shoals album was released. Some people claim that Rickey was "just a studio musician" for them at that time, but how many bands pay money to a studio to go in and record the songs written by the studio musician??? None.
Early Skynyrd had Larry Junstrom (38 Special's bass player) as their bass player. After that, Greg T Walker (Blackfoot's bass player) was also in Skynyrd at the time when Rickey was drummer for Skynyrd. 38 Special's female backup singer is Dale Krantz Rossington, Gary Rossington's wife.
Rickey came back to Skynyrd in the 90's as their lead guitarist, along with Hughie Thommason from the Outlaws.
As your next Blackfoot reaction, I'd suggest Diary of a Workingman or Left Turn on a Red Light. Both are phenomenal.

The Outlaws is another southern rock band worth checking out. Check out “Green Grass and High Tides” and “Ghostriders in the Sky.” Molly Hatchet’s cover of “Dreams I’ll Never See” is another big guitar song. Great songs all.

This song appealed to a wide swath of America at the time: Truckers, Greyhound and other bus line drivers, and especially touring bands and their crews. This is essentially their Turn The Page.

Ever get the feelin that Ricky never got that Lynyrd Skynyrd out of his system? The end of that song calls back a little Freebird only bigger and much much better. He doesn't just string bend and noodle like the end of Freebird the man SHREDS and absolutely kills it, yet what song gets all the attention, go figure. It's a shame these guys don't get the recognition they deserve. Thanx for getting back to them so quick. I couldn't wait for you to get to it because I knew you'd love it.

Saw Blackfoot in Oct 2021 Columbia SC and they still have tons of energy. Was a great show, in a small venue and when they were done, they stepped off the stage, no security, and hung out with the crowd. Wish more bands did that

It doesn’t get any more southern than this. Skynyrd’s Free Bird with its blistering back and forth extended guitar outro most certainly laid out the blueprint for Highway Song. The Outlaws took note, too. Green Grass and High Tides, released a few years earlier, was their “Free Bird.” After a few verses (and tension building), the vocals take a back seat and all hell breaks loose to the finish line. Then you exhale.
The Outlaws "Hurry Sundown"...Nuff Said.
So many great songs by Blackfoot....Wishing Well, Fly Away, and To hot to handle, are a couple more I'm sure you'll love. Go on down that rabbit hole, you won't be disappointed.

I started seeing Blackfoot in 1980 when I was 16. 43 years later and Ive met Ricky several times here in Fort Myers. Same guy just older. Still one of the best lead men in a band and has a big heart. Skynyrd did a hurricane Ian benefit down here and they sounded like they did 30 years earlier. Saw him in the airport the last month and he said hi, like a normal person.
Ricky Medlock is the lead singer and guitarist. He is in Lynard Skynard now. He is the one with snow white hair now. He was a founding member of Lynard Skynard back in the day.

Watching you two groovin’ to Highway Song and Train, Train made my day! Saw Blackfoot in early 80’s in Florida. To cram more into small arena, entire seating was standing room only. Nobody cared because we were all too busy rockin out to that incredible rock. You guys played the first two of (IMHO) their three best songs. The third (again IMHO) is Fox Chase and it’s my favorite. I love the country harmonica followed by the hard driving rock riff. Everyone instantly turned into an expert air guitarist. Who the hell needed a chair.
I love your reactions to Blackfoot. As I was listening the band The Outlaws came to mind with songs like Hurry Sundown and Green Grass and High Tides.
In the 80s the late great Ken Hensley was joining them after leaving his band Uriah Heep (he also played with WASP and Cinderella for some time). Please please do some Heep once, you didn't touch them at all but they were as importantant in the development of Hard Rock, Metal, and Prog as Zep, Purple, and Sabbath. If you like this song, do July Morning, where the brilliant Manfred Mann was joining Ken on a 10' psychedelic organ trip! One of the biggest annual festivals in Eastern Europe is named after this song. The Heep just released their 25th!!! album in 53 years and they are still as strong as any youngster prog metal band.
The lead guitar on this is Ricky Medlock. He was a founding member of Skynyrd but left before their 1st record deal. After the plane crash Ricky rejoined the band
The next song of theirs should be 'Rattlesnake Rock'n'Roller". Starts off with a banjo intro then changes to a piano driven rocker Jay will love. These guys still do live concerts and still kick it !

I saw Skynyrd back about 20 years ago with Rickey Medlocke at a Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga TN,great show,he is a great performer with Skynyrd and Blackfoot.

Yes another Jacksonville Fl band! I still have a few pics of Blackfoot opening for Nugent in '79 when this album came out. This was Blackfoot's 'Free Bird' , sort of. Start off slow then end with all guitars tearing the stage apart. Much longer live. Thank u for this one too. 'Fox Chase' from their next album is banger.
I met Rickey Medlock backstage at a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert In New Orleans. We talked for a while. A very cool and nice guy.

Little trivia…Rickey Medlocke (guitar shredder and vocals) played with Lynryd Skynrd 71-72 and also from 1996 when they reformed with Ronnie’s little brother Johnny as their vocalist. Sounds so much like his brother.
