Oh man I've been wanting to know SKS Prop's painting secrets for so long. I love the fact he has a background in regular art. Thank you Bill for making a video featuring him. I've been panting my foam with the traditional way of back and forth and hadn't thought to use a different technique. Thank you. I just want to see him paint and entire project now. haha ;)
Finally. Coming from painting minis to starting prop making, I was always so confused why everyone just used chip brushes. Glad SKS is demoing a different painting style. Thanks for making this video Punished Props!
1 thing i have always used to clean my brushes, both cheap and good, is paint thinner, even for acrylic colors. i just pour a couple ml into a tray, swab the brush through it, then rinse in water & both shake & pat dry the bristles. Only takes a few drops per brush. some colors like reds might take a couple dips in fresh thinner.
did not see the "BOING" sound effect coming. So many nooks and crannies. You could do a whole episode on brush care. Those brushes can last for years, but they need proper care and use. great video!
Hi Bill n other bloke, Thanks for sharing, nother past life was painting and decorating and signwriting so yeah good brushes GOOD. Final clean with some washing up liquid, rinse then place in both hands and spin the brush back and forth this flings any remaining pigment water out. For your flat brushes or pencils (fine tip) I always get a bar of soap and run the wet brush over said soap then shape the with my fingers this way when the soap dries the brush keeps its shape. Hope all that made sense. G Side note: I once used conditioner on some of my decorating brushes (Hamilton Perfection Plus) and they really did fell great and soo soft:-)
Haha. That Michaels brush value pack. I’ve bought like 3 since I started cosplaying. They’ve been great for me even though I’m so mean to them (the water thing 🤣). I might buy a couple of the nice brushes though and give them a spin! The paints look really nice too but even with coupons that’s gonna be out of my budget. Maybe I’ll spring for the silver since budget acrylic silvers are never quite up to par.
Higher quality tools can make a big difference in your prop and costume experience, but there are also professionals who swear by the cheap stuff. What's important is finding what works for YOU as a maker. - Paige
Sealing/priming helps protect the foam and prepare the surface for whatever finish you're trying to accomplish. That's why theres so many different methods of sealing foam. In this case, we simply primed it with black spray paint.
brush maintenance tips i recommend brush soap something like masters brush soap or something similar a puck or bottle will last a long time. should water brush between coats unless youre using the brush every 2 seconds if not should wet and wipe between coats or the acrylic will dry and makes it harder to rinse out. the tapping on the hand should help. place brush horizontal or tip down for storage/drying so that the water or paint or both dont soak into the furel ferul the metal collar where the bristles are glued in.( its one of the reasons why the bristles lose its point or flatness or sharpness because paint or water gunk can dry down in the fural and splay the bristles out losing its edge.) should load/have paint 1/3rd or half way up the bristles if able because over time especially when wet water paint mixture will soak down into the fural as mentioned previously. dont leave brush in water cup it will bend the bristles and deform it, mess with the glue mentioned in fural, if wood handle will start soaking water and expanding damaging brush handle. last thing from the top of my head is after paint session if possible or end of week proper cleaning. either with brush soap the nicer smelling and least aggressive, isopropyl alcohol which should work on most paints but sometimes not on certain brands/paint types, turps and spirits for aggressive cleaning.
No idea how i missed this video with how much I've watched both of you..lol I REALLY wish I could afford those better paints, but it's just not happening lol I can't spend $17 on ONE paint..I can get 16 (after tax) of the ones at walmart (AppleBarrel/PLAID) for the same price..Can't help it when you don't have income lol That end result is SICK though. Steve is a freaking BEAST with painting. Also, yea. EVERYTHING Steve said about cleaning brushes is 100% what you should do. I personally run them under the faucet on a low stream rather than a water cup, but whatever.
@@punishedpropsOh I know, I use similar techniques with those cheaper brands. I was just saying I wish I could afford those ones because they are priced higher for a reason, they ARE better quality. I DO however, need to pick up better brushes lol I didn't know what those ones in this video were called, so now I do, and can look for them. I just have regular ones, (better than the ones you jokingly picked off the rack), but None of them are in line with mop or filbert style brushes. So I'm gonna be picking up some of them soon.
There's a creepy looking face in the water at 12:29... looks like a Frankenstein's monster! Thanks for the informative video and it was great to see SKS Props there with you!
just picked up your book, I've been watching many videos. i have 1 question tho. How much paint to buy? how many ounces of liqutex is sufficient to cover a head to toe arrmour build? say if you were covering with metallic bright silver?
I'm not sure, as it totally depends on your height and build, how your armor is made, etc. It's worth it to get what you THINK you need, plus a bit more. Sometimes you just have to get more, and that's okay!
I got a question I want to make a prop spider for my sister's Halloween but I need it to be durable plastic I've looked into some resins also but they seem to be brittle and won't hold up. It's going to be animated using a some servos what can I get from smooth on that can handle it tapping its legs up and down on a hard surface. I tried smooth cast onyx but it's brittle. I need a hard material cuz it will be a hollow shell Limbs and body. It's Hollow because the cables that runs to each segment of the legs go through the legs on the inside. Any advice would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.
I would ask the folks at Smooth-On directly. They're really great at recommending the right product. You can contact them on twitter. twitter.com/smoothon
Wow thanks dude :D Great technique! And i didnt know that I'd need this silver colour xD Sadly nothing lf my props i plan to do have rust on it... but ill save it for later :3
I decided just to buy the 50 piece version of that cheap brush set Bill jokingly grabbed because 1) I am a cheap nuggest and 2) I reaaaally am notorious for leaving my brushes soaking or not getting paint cleaned out of them. If I ever build better brush care habits, I'll get decent brushes.
Seeing people's comments about just now realizing they shouldn't treat their brushes like garbage gives me anxiety lol. Clean your brushes people!!! I have a $35 brush I bought 10 years ago that is still in great shape because I treated it well. It's worth it!
Also, Also...get a little thing of The Master's Brush Cleaner and Preserver. It is not as harsh as other cleaners, and if you leave a little bit on the bristles and shape them a bit with your fingers it'll keep your brushes nice and sharp, and all you have to do is remember to swish it around in water before using it again. Brush care matters!!
I've heard the cinnamon tip for creating rust effects before - but my question is wouldn't its organic composition break down over time, or does it get preserved in the paint/sealer?
Spices are designed to be preserved for long periods of time and don't really "go bad," the same way other foods will. And yes there would also be some protection from getting coated in the paint and sealant itself. Unless you're using copious amounts of it, you shouldn't have to worry :) - Paige

The cost of the brushes really translates to how long they last and how well they do what they do. You certainly don't need to get them if you don't want to, but I've found it's usually worth it to pay a bit extra to get a tool that's going to last longer and do the job better!

Is there no need for priming (with plastidip or so)? And how would you go by doing this on armor? (that may or may not end up being hit in some way)
Sealing/priming helps protect the foam and prepare the surface for whatever finish you're trying to accomplish. That's why theres so many different methods of sealing foam. In this case, we simply primed it with black spray paint.

And I always thought I'd go to hell for shortening my brushes
The correct way to paint is what works best for you!
So with acrylics you just use water to clean them? Any thoughts on other kinds of paints, like latex or lacquers?
Rubbing alcohol works for most paints. Mineral spirits work too. Lacquer thinner is aggressive, but will work if you need that kind of power.
