Solid video. Thanks for your contributions to the art community! I didn't expect the time, effort and pressure of inktober to be so astounding. I need some more practice!
Very informative video! I've been inking my work for several years now and I learned some new stuff from this. I got a question. I've been inking with a pentel pocket brush pen in combination with microns but am thinking about trying my hand at inking with a brush and bottled ink. Just to experiment for the most part. That said, what would the advantages be in inking with a brush over a brush pen? Thanks in advance!
no problem. I know these style of "learn this or that" are low hanging fruit for youtube hits...but I seriously felt like this was a very key video I needed to do....for people to get into inking...doing it for a while. I can easily assume that some of this stuff is obvious...and I know that isn't the case. I will go over clipstudio as well...because that's a major tool being used now (myself included)
THAT was a weird experience... I was sitting at my desk inking a page, your video on my monitor, headphones on... I dont know what you record your sound with but the result was so similar to my own room atmosphere that it was a) like you were sitting right next to me and b) made it sound like all the clattering noises you made with the tools were happening in my immediate vicinity, like, right on my own desk. More than once I thought I had knocked something over on my table. Cool video though! I am a little further down the road, I just realized that my crow quill and my paper don't match, the paper is too rough apparently.
I ink over pencil, and losing ink when I erase the pencils is the bane of my existence! ... Using strathmore 500 has really helped! I'll experiment with different erasers also, like you suggest here.
oh god. I forgot about paper....that's a 100 part series and will break hearts and divide countries. hahahaha I remember years ago reading dale Keown hated erasing pages and I didn't understand at the time why. I thought well come on..erasing pages is your pet peeve....but with experience you realize why an artist like him would hate it!! live and learn...sometimes we think we understand something and then way later...you go...OH that is what he meant/
@@RichardFriendartist ah haha, yeah a lot of it is seeing what other people are doing and thinking hey why doesnt my stuff look like that? what am I doing wrong? what are they doing right? ... that's the fun of it honestly
@@jedd1099 I mainly use Copic Multiliners over Microns now...but was trying to be a little budget conscious on this first video because I know out of the gate most people don't have a ton of money to spend on supplies.
This is great, man, thank you! I've been trying to delve more into indepth inking stuff, using nibs and so forth. I would REALLY like to see a techniques video, and if you could demystify french curves, that would be amazing, lol. Thanks for all the great videos!
great idea. Watching this back. I caught small things I should have gone into more...but the next video can pick up those pieces and then move into using all this stuff~! :)
I was just watching this video out of curiosity, because I have all my inking gear...and I noticed the super opaque white you have is a different looking bottle. I remember when you first mentioned it I got a bottle and loved it. I find that its hard to find now. Where do you get yours ? I've checked Amazon, Dick Blick, Utrech and Jet Pen.
How long has it been since you bought microns, or are you buying them whole sale.? Microns run about $3-$4 a piece. On occasion I find them on sale $2 each. Or if i get 40% coupon from Micheals.
also for sure wait for sales. I always look around and also because I buy in bulk things like free shipping or discounts at certain spending levels (like spend over $60 get 15% off etc...or over $120 get 25% off) that all helps and I stack stuff on. I only buy supplies maybe 1 time a year..maybe even once every 16 months.
@@VictorRodriguezArt also for the familiarity of the video...you have to understand almost every time I post a drawing. I will get asked what tools I use/ literally every single day...so this topic even if you address it daily in replies...is always relevant. and something I have to hit on in current content because people want the new videos and are far less likely to find something similar posted a year or two back/ So for inktober this seemed appropriate and is a new video/
Hey Rich, i do appreciate the videos. Im loving all the videos. I know ive bumped you a few times on various social media platforms. You’ve said before that you typical just use water to clean your equipment. Is there a specific cleaner you use for brushes or nibs? Ive trashed at least three different brushes (raphael and windsors) because the brush hair frays out and refuses to stay in a point in only a matter of weeks. Any tips for maintenance/care so i can stop asking my wife to buy more tools😂.
I don't. I dont even clean my tools honestly. I use that dirty ink water to clean my brush. If it gets too many particles in it. I'll switch it out. That's really it. I use a rag and wipe off my hunt 102's
Richard Friend i thought it was just a “bad” raphael brush when it happened, but shortly after it happened to my second. So i grabbed a few windsor brushes and it happened again to one of them. Just sucks cause i really likes using the brushes.
@@coreyisinking I had the same problems when I started using brushes. It felt like their lifespan was a month. Now most brushes I can use for 6-12 months. So at least for me. It was me, not the brushes most times. There are bad brushes but past that. You just need to spend more time with it. Take a lesson from me and send me a video of you inking. Not a sales pitch but if you really want proper feedback that's one way to get a direct assessment.
Richard Friend i will have to do that. One thing that i have noticed recently is just the way i hold my tools. I was trying to use them as if i were holding a pencil. I have switched up my grip similar to what i have seen in your videos and have already noticed improvements in line consistency. Id really like to join your patreon channel for the portfolio reviews (and all the other content i could soak up).
yeah and it goes both ways...being a inker, isn't the same as being a penciler, or layout artist...they have some crossover but are very different muscles. thanks!
HAHA! I bought some of those Chinese knock off pens and they were all dry. They weren't even the right brand and the logo was smearing off. It didn't cost much so I just thought it was funny. Lesson learned. ;)

The other place you can purchase art supplies is Jet Pens (online art store for brush pens and LOTS of great tools for drawing and inking)
I love JetPens!
Wow, I can say you have been a great ink profesor. I should take a look at that patreon

For me it was ink. I switched from microns to an rotring isographs and the I stopped losing ink.
(I use kaimei sumi ink and a gpen these days though)

How can you get blue line drawings to practice inking on with out drawing them yourself? I can't seem to find any info on that

They just switched the "name" it was called "aero flash " and now it's "acrylic ink." Still super opaque white is the color
