What is PRINCE2 Agile? ...and Does it Make Sense?

- PRINCE2 Agile is for PRINCE2 Project Managers who need to be able to tailor PRINCE2 to an agile context or environment.
PRINCE2 Agile is a formal Project Management methodology that lets practitioners combine the strong governance principles of PRINCE2 with the flexibility, responsiveness, and rapid benefits delivery of agile methods such as Scrum and Kanban.
It offers a certification for individuals involved with project, product, and program delivery and support. Its owners claim PRINCE2 Agile is the world’s most complete agile project management solution.
There are two tiers of training and certification:
• PRINCE2 Agile Foundation
...that covers the basics
• PRINCE2 Agile Practitioner
...applies it to real-world project examples
Tailoring is a central principle of PRINCE2. PRINCE2 Agile is an effective hybrid approach to project management, that allows organizations to combine what is best for them in terms of delivery, with an imperative for a strong governance framework.
• The ‘PRINCE2 part’ focuses on the products the organization requires to support its business needs
• The ‘Agile part’ focuses on delivering those products in an adaptive and efficient way, incrementally delivering more working products as the work progresses.
A PRINCE2 Agile project can use any development approach: Scrum, Kanban, or any other. The only requirement is that they comply with the structures and governance that PRINCE2 wraps around the agile cycles.
PRINCE2 has 6 performance targets (time, cost, quality, scope, risks, benefits).
In PRINCE2 Agile, time and cost are fixed. So, to deliver what users need, scope and quality criteria can be flexed, as agreed with the customer. They can also determine how much risk to accept and the amount of benefit they will prioritize. To achieve this PRINCE2 Agile uses prioritization techniques such as MoSCoW, along with sprint backlogs.

A while back, I asked Project Managers in a couple of forums what material things you need to have, to do your job as a Project Manager. They responded magnificently. I compiled their answers into a Kit list.

Great explanation Mike! I am from the USA, and thus, a PMI PMP-dominated arena. Yet, the more I hear about Prince2 Agile the more I think this could be beneficial to many of our development efforts on this side of the pond.
I wish PMI did the same with Agile, instead of just lumping it in with the PMP. Thoughts?
One could argue that both the PMP and PRINCE2 are both methodology agnostic. Both started out well before AGile was a thing. Both organizations also have an agile certification: PRINCE2 Agile and PMI-ACP.
[What is the PMI-ACP? The Agile Certified Professional - th-cam.com/video/r7D75fjiZSM/w-d-xo.html]
The difference is that PMI first, deliberately munged agile into its main 'methodology statement' with PMBOK6 packaged with the Agile Practice Guide and then added Agile explicitly to the PMP exam. Now Agile & Hybrid account for half the questions. Then PMI made PMBOK7 entirely approach-neutral. The have an Agile Practice Guide as a book. What is effectively a Predictive Practice Guide is the PMIstandards+ website and, arguably, the new 'Process Groups: A Practice Guide'.
Thanks a lot for your video, I'm from France and didn't meet an organisation or even people who talk about prince2 yet. It's more about Scrum and SAFe. Maybe a little late :)
Yes, PRINCE2 is used in Europe, but mostly in Northern Europe. All that matters is what the employers you may want to work with expect. PRINCE2 is a good certification, but by no means a necessary one in most places.
Great video Mike, thanks for a helpful explanation of the course 👏
You're very welcome, Anjum.
Great video Mike. Some fantastic info. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Cian.
Lovely video Mike. Absolutely billiant.
One of the LinkedIn instructors (British too) said something go for PMP and he said the Prince 2 is not a brilliant qualifications to have. He also said Prince does seem to be coming to the end of its life now.
Your thoughts please? I am more focused on PRINCE 2 than PMP.
I see no reason to think PRINCE2 is nearing end of life. Does it need to evolve? Yes. Will it evolve? Probably. But extraordinary claims like this demand evidence and I see none. This influencer needs to put up or shut up - it sounds more like clickbait to me. Is PRINCE2 a brilliant qualification? Yes, if you are working for organizations that demand it or you need to work in high governance environments. No, if you are working for organizations that just demand a PMP. As always, each qualification is right for some people and wrong for others. As PRINCE2 has been telling us for years (and PMI's PMBOK has underplayed) - do a business case. Studying for any certification will take time and cost money. Compare that commitment to the benefits YOU will get for YOUR career, and make your choice. I still believe that PRINCE2 and MSP are excellent bodies of knowledge that can serve serious practitioners extremely well.
@@Onlinepmcourses incredible reply Mike. Just love it, Do you habe Cyber Monday sales for Prince 2 courses?
@@ArohShukla No sales I am afraid - because I don't have my own courses. But you can see the ones I recommend at onlinepmcourses.com/project-management-certification-programs/prince2-qualifications/
My PRINCE2 resource guide and roadmap is at: onlinepmcourses.com/project-management-certification-programs/study-prince2/
Hello Mike! Thank you for taking the time to make this video. What would you recommend doing ? CSM/PSM/PRINCE2 AGILE.
I am from India .
As always, I’d recommend you to research the market where you want to work both sector wise and geographically. Which Qualifcations does the market value or demand for the work you want to do?
Wow, great
I had a thought that I need to get the certification in both Prince2 and Prince2 agile...
But it's clear now.
Let's start with Prince2 agile and follow Prince2 agile practitioner 😊
Best of luck to you.
Hey Mike, could you give more tips for someone who wants to have a Project Management career but does not have experience in a specific industry.
Nicolas - happy to. What in particular would help you?
@@Onlinepmcourses Well, let me explain my situation. I am 22 years old, I have a 3-year degree in Construction Technology, and I am taking an MBA in Project Management. Unfortunately, due to family and personal life problems, I have not had working experience.
I love Project Management, especially because I love to see ideas become reality. It's my dream to become a PM, but I don't know how to start. I wonder if it would be better to learn programming, and then switch to IT due to opportunities...
I am confused and I'd love your advice. Thanks for your attention!
@@nicolaspaiva4790 Nicolas - aha: the old chicken and egg problem of no experience, so hard to get a job. No job, so no experience. First, I'd say stick with your dream. Perhaps look for local engineering or construction companies that can offer roles with an element of PM in them. Your degree will seem relevant to them and your MBA will be attractive. This could get you your starter experience. Other tactics may depend on market intelligence for employers in your target sector and local area.
