    Tesla's 'Redwood' Compact Crossover. How's 4680 Battery a Game-Changer for Model 2? Detail HERE.
During the recent Q1 earnings call, the Tesla Redwood board shed light on the future of the 4680 battery project and its anticipated integration into upcoming car models. Today, we'll take a closer look at this development, examining the current progress of the 4680 battery ramp-up, and addressing the question: Why is this battery the optimal choice for Tesla's affordable model? Lastly, we'll touch on alternative battery options that could potentially be considered for the Model 2, should Tesla decide to pivot from their current plan. Let's now delve into the main topic.
How is Tesla's Redwood current 4680 ramp up going?
Here's what Tesla mentioned in the shareholder letter: “4680 ramp continued successfully in Q1 and continues to stay ahead of the Cybertruck ramp. Costs continued to come down sequentially as scrap, yield and production rate improved.” This indicates that the production of the 4680 battery is progressing smoothly and Tesla will have sufficient battery cells available for other Tesla vehicle models. Looking ahead, by the close of 2025, Tesla plans to have battery production from LG Energy Solution (LGES), Panasonic, and their own 4680 cells at the expanded Giga Nevada facility. LGES is considering mass production of the 4680 battery at its Nanjing plant in China, while Panasonic may add 4680 capacity at its Kansas facility, according to Electrek. This diversified supply chain ensures an abundance, if not more than enough, of battery cells not only for Cybertruck but also for other Tesla models.
Tesla Redwood also highlighted in the Q1 earning call that the development of the 4680 battery has enabled them to reduce supplier costs, and the company can leverage those savings within its supply chain, even when sourcing the end product from external battery manufacturers. In other words, Tesla can buy inputs to battery cells on the cheap, pass those inputs on to battery cell producers, and then benefit from lower battery costs compared to competitors.
