    Dude!!!! I can’t believe it. Your video saved me hundreds. I troubleshot the relay, the fuse and I bypassed the conector.
    Fans worked, but wouldn’t come on as the temperature increased.
    Replaced the sensor as you stated and everything works like a charm.
    My beloved civic lives again because of you and for a fraction of what it would’ve cost me at any shop.
    I loved your video.
    Subed.

    Thank you for a great diagnosis video, I knew it was the thermostat but the mechanic said it wasn't proving faulty for him. Overheated again on a longer drive. The cold hose confirmed the coolant isn't getting past the thermostat. Nice 1

    Tried what you told in this video using the paper clip and both the fans turned on. So its evident that the coolant temperature sensor is broken

    I've been a mechanic for over 50 years I randomly watch videos from time to time my son's car is an 01 Honda just a little beater commuter car overheats intermittently fans are coming on they don't come on at 95° they come on at about 180 with the AC off and they cycle on and off some cars go get as high as 220 or even 230° before the fans come on if you're not using the air conditioning this one is being really sneaky the combustion gas test was negative most of the time when you have head problems you don't get water in the oil nowadays you just get combustion gas in the cooling system sometimes it can be really sneaky sometimes it'll go along fine for even a month before it overheats usually when it's like that it's because the head is slightly warped so even if your radiator is clean your thermostat is good your fans are coming on your car will still overheat just an FYI for all you troubled people out there

    My son's 2003 Civic just overheated 3days ago. I checked the fan and the radiator hose, it's not even warm even when the temperature reaches redline. The fan doesn't turns on at all. So I just replaced the thermostat, and now, the radiator hose feels warm/hot which is good. But I still have to trouble shoot the fan issue.
    After watching your video, I was able to trouble shoot that the coolant sensor switch is ALSO bad. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP on how to figure out a faulty switch.
    I addition, I also discovered that the radiator is also leaking at the top, which is causing some steam once the engine gets hot.
    So three things that I had to fix: Thermostat + gasket ($28), coolant sensor switch ($10), Denso Radiator ($85).
    The CIVIC has only 240K miles, barely breaking-in, LoL. 😄

      Same thing happened to me but at 150K. First, the radiator had a crack in it. Then the radiator cap was bad too. Then the switch had to be replaced because fans were not coming on. Last but not least, the thermostat had to be changed. Plus I changed the top and bottom radiator hoses just to be safe.
      My car has been great and hasn't overheated at all since the changes for 5K miles. Hope it stays that way for a while.
      Radiator
      Radiator Cap
      Fan Switch
      Top and Bottom Hose
      Thermostat w/ Gasket
      Spent probably around $130-150 but I changed everything so that was great.

    @ricardosom7766 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Let me ask you a question. Before I’ll tell you the issue. My car takes long to start, and when it starts it sounds like going on and off. There’s a lot of people going though the radiator hose, it’s packed with air pressure, and the car starts blowing stons of white smoke. In Drive it goes slowly cause reverse you have to amost have the pedal to floor to move it a little. How do I know if the heads are blown ?

    • @HighRidgeHandyman
      @HighRidgeHandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually white smoke from the exhaust means there a coolant leak into the engine. To test for a head gasket leak open the oil fill cap and if it’s a brownish yellow milky substance that will indicate you have a head gasket leak. Good luck 👍🏻

    • @HighRidgeHandyman
      @HighRidgeHandyman  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The drivers side is the AC condenser fan the passenger side is the main cooling fan. Turn both on by running engine and turning on AC. If only one comes on get some type of object and tap the motor to the fan not working. If it comes on you most likely will need a new fan motor. If not check the wiring connections. Then check the fuses associated with the fan not working. And obviously checking to see if the sensors are good.

      Drain coolant. Stick water hose inside radiator and radiator hoses. Fill radiator with white vinegar and run car for about 20 min with heater on. Drain white vinegar and flush again with water hose and then refill with coolant. More likely your heater core or motor has a blockage. I know it sounds crazy but it fixed the same problem you were having.

    My temp needle goes all over the place while driving. It will go up to redline then come back down once im doing 50mph or more.
    Ive had my radiator bled and gotten air bubbles out. Checked it for a blown head gaskets or leaks and that came back fine. Work well for a couple weeks after the system was burped. Now im over heating again.

    • @HighRidgeHandyman
      @HighRidgeHandyman  ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason your civic is not overheating when you are driving on the highway is because the air is passing through the engine keeping it cool. But when you’re idle or driving around town and not getting a lot of airflow it will overheat possibly due to faulty fans. You have to check your radiator fans to make sure they’re operating properly.

    Thank you for the video. If you could tell me the part number of the radiator cap with the relief valve I would appreciate it. My 2004 Honda with 223k miles had a bad thermostat. I would like to say the OEM thermostat I bought had 78C stamped into it. 78C is close to 178 F. After changing it and purging the system the ODB-II reported 180 degrees F as I took a long test drive. If you are moving the electric fans are not required, if the thermostat which controls/regulates heat and flow fails then there's different issue. Thanks Again take care.

    Good morning, I have a Honda Civic 2003, that the radiator and hoses were changed last December 2022, 3 weeks ago the coolant reservoir cap blew on it, repair shop said they put a sealant on the fluid and tested everything and should be fine after a week same thing happened. Now they are saying its the head gasket needs to be done( That's a lot of money), but my oil is dark as hell not any sign of coolant/water in it. So I bought it home for now.
    I already did checked the fuse and fans with a pin myself and they are working. What would be my next step? Thanks

    • @HighRidgeHandyman

      Sounds like your pressure is building and unable to release so it finds its way to the reservoir cap. Try changing the actual radiator cap, I would also change the thermostat. See if that helps before changing the head gasket. Good luck

      D16V1 cooling problem is known!
      The point is that the expansion tank should be filled to the maximum level when the engine is warm, and the radiator should be filled to the maximum level as well. If there is still air in the system, the car should be parked on a sloping driveway with the front facing upwards. With a warm engine, idle the car and turn the heat to maximum and set the internal air circulation to on. Remove the radiator cap and wait until all the air comes out through the radiator. When no more air is visible coming out of the radiator, the engine speed can be increased to 1500-2000 rpm. This further circulates the water and more air will come out of the system at this point.
      As air comes out of the system, the radiator should be continuously refilled. After this process, there should be no more problems. Every mechanic told me that my car had a blown head gasket, this was 6 years ago, and there has been no problem to this day!
      I hope I was able to help...

      If you tried the paper clip and they went on. I would make sure the thermostat isn’t defective. Oh make sure you have the correct temp switch for that model. There are a few different ones that will fit but not communicate. Remember the temp has to rise considerably before they operate.
