Yes, Beethoven has to tell a real story. Many pianists have not much more to tell than Beethoven is crazy. His music isn´t. I´m also trying to find the true story of Appassionata, and here I feel familiar :-) P.S.: ... after listening to the end, I feel no more so comfortable - it is a bit to... hard
Part of the emotional effect here is that Pierre-Laurent has a wonderfully clear idea of the architecture of the piece. Opus 57 is after all a masterpiece of integration.
Interprétation agréable et très maîtrisée. On entend parfaitement toutes les notes, ce qui en fait le charme. Un peu trop gentil à mon goût. Beethoven était un intempestif et aurait certainement souhaité plus de fougue. Ceci dit grand Bravo pour votre performance.... c'est du cousu main
A very interesting pianist, with a particular, personal tone pitch that makes distinctive everything he plays. Don't know if he'll ever record the Von Beet piano sonatas, but if he did so, I'll be of the first in getting them. This is kind of a Beethoven interpreter. Very good, really. 🙄👍❤️🙏
I wonder if there are any rivals in tragedicality to the Appassionata final coda besides Chopin's 1st, (2nd though in a different way,) and 4th ballades + 1st scherzo.
f.e. 3rd mov.: transition 18:18ff (exactly 18:27) - and, not so significant, the transition back 21:21. He didn´t lose the big way and remained in a similar harmony, but perhaps hasn´t come fully inside the development of the music there. I´ve just passed the same problem...
Way better! He has an unusual commitment to contemporary music, better than any other musician in the world. His playing has substance and not frivolous showpiece antics!

Es geht nicht um "runde Finger" oder wie auch immer geartete "Handbewegungen" sondern schlicht darum, dass waltervonstolzing13 völlig richtigerweise erkannt hat, dass Aimards Aufführung etliche falsche Töne und Ungenauigkeiten hat. Das kann man monieren, wenn man möchte, muss es aber auch nicht. Aber ein "Dummkopf" ist er/sie deshalb mit Sicherheit nicht. Aimard amazed me way back when his Ligeti etudes came out . He was always in televised Boulez appearances but I neve saw these till they were available . He plays this mid-period Beethoven without the neurosis and electric anxiety and ( tightened posture I guess Brendel , Sokolov and others bring to it . Even Arrau's harder and hot tone seems right and the really granite slow tempo he & Backhaus gives us in the slow movement is to my mind perfect .Fazil Say is a genius in this music ! I've never forgotten hearing him with Guilini in 4th concerto ) Around 8th minute I felt tension but the pedal mars this . I"ll never be skilled enough to study with Aimard but I hope one day to find out why he plays Beethoven this way . French pianists like Fray ,Collard , Katsaris are really great !
Gould was not the worst Beethoven pianist. The last 3 Sonatas he played great, some of the earlier sonatas, the beethoven concerto 1+2 are wonderful plaed by Gould. Even Stravinsky admires his recording of the last 3 Beethoven sonatas. In the Mozart Sonatas there are movements, he played surpringly and not boring, like so often, for sure not all them.
Dieses Video zeigt einmal mehr, dass Aimard einer der besten Interpreten ist, nicht nur von Ligeti (den er persönlich kannte!), sondern auch von vielen anderen, teils klassischen Komponisten. Ähnlich wie auch Ligeti (um bei dem Beispiel zu bleiben), ist er ein sehr analytischer Spieler, wobei man ihm seine herausragende Musikalität deshalb nicht absprechen kann... Ich selbst bin Freund der Musik von Beethoven, sowie von einigen der modernen Werke Ligetis (z.B. Der Zauberlehrling oder einige Werke aus Musica Ricercata) und kann mir ungefähr ein Bild davon machen, wie groß das Talent und vorallem die Übung sein muss (ich spiele nämlich selbst Klavier :D), bevor man sich an diese hochkomplexen Komponisten herantraut... Hut ab für diese wundervolle Interpretation, welche mit einer unfassbaren Perfektion gespielt wurde... Fazit: Aimard ist ein wahrer Geheimtipp (der es meiner Ansicht nach verdient hätte von mehr Leuten gehört zu werden) und ein genialer Interpret vieler moderner, aber auch klassischer Stücke. With respect - I don't think this slow tempo is quite right. Where is the excitement that should set the tone at the outset? Honestly - I almost fell asleep about 2 minutes into the first movement.

If the first movement's score has tempo mark "Allegro Maestoso" and time signature "6/4", I think his play is the best.

He plays as if he wanted to convince Glenn Gould of the value of this sonata.
Gould was not the worst Beethoven pianist. The last 3 Sonatas he played great, some of the earlier sonatas, the beethoven concerto 1+2 are wonderful plaed by Gould. Gould is beneath him, he is a Frenchman, with the Glory of Louise 14 and French Classicism, not a Canadian, never the centre of Western culture.
Even Beethoven, wherever he is, is saying "Damn. That's good."

What happened at the section around 9:50: He played the RH in measure 235 in the wrong octave.
Obviously a mistake which happens sometimes also to the greatest masters.
