- SIR Lindsay Hoyle has been elected the new House of Commons Speaker by MPs to replace John Bercow.
The favourite beat Chris Bryant by 112 votes in the fourth and final round.
In the final round of votes, Sir Lindsay, formerly a deputy to Mr Bercow, got 325 while fellow Labour MP Chris Bryant received 213.
Sir Lindsay will replace Mr Bercow, who left the role after a decade which has been viewed as a time of reform but also controversy.
Speakers must be politically impartial, meaning Sir Lindsay will be required to resign from the Labour Party in order to carry out his duties.
Speaking after the result, Sir Lindsay, 62, distanced himself from his showboat predecessor.
Sir Lindsay, who is widely popular and respected by colleagues, said: "I will be neutral. I will be transparent.
"This House will change but it will change for the better."
He also paid tribute to his daughter Natalie Lewis-Hoyle, 28, who died in 2017 and whom he said his family misses a great deal.
Sir Lindsay was reluctantly dragged to his chair as part of a tradition dating back to the days when speakers could be sentenced to death if they displeased the monarch.

Lovely tribute to his daughter. Being a father who has lost a child myself it was very touching and moving on a personal level too. May she rest in peace.

Already seems like a likeable person and neutral, exactly what a speaker should be
Indeed!
He can't be any worse than Bercow.
“I’m now gonna call - the first time - THE PRIME MINISTER!” it’s so heartwarming how happy he is ☺️
I will forever miss watching him say “Order” and “Unlock” live. Here’s to a new decade, Mr Hoyle 👍

What a gentleman. He's one of the best speakers we've ever had.

Hoyle is dreadful.
So much respect for my local MP Sir Lindsay Hoyle, glad to see he is finally getting the recognition he deserves in the house
Does this mean that you won’t have a general election in your area because he reverts to being an independent MP and his seat is no longer contested?
JasonTheGreat18 He remains an MP I believe
TrXl he remains an MP but he is no longer a part of the Labour Party.
As the speaker he has to be an independent MP.
But it is the usual convention that all of the other parties do not field a candidate in the constituency.
So perhaps they will have an election with only Sir Lindsay on the ballot?
Seems like a huge waste of time and money.
So my question was asking if they actually will hold an election in that constituency
@@JasonTheGreat18 Out of respect for the role of speaker, generally speaking the other major party withdraws from running for his constituency, some more minor parties don't though: but it's a tradition which is always followed by Labour and the Conservatives.
Edit: So yes, they will. But it's not pointless because they can still vote otherwise.
Pottasium Dichromate ah ok thanks for the clarification there :)
If that woman had dragged him any more abruptly, he would have fallen over 😂
Well he should have expected it. It is a tradition to drag the newly selected speaker of the house to his seat and she was keen to keep up that tradition haha
It’s tradition. It reflects how undesirable the position was in the past.

Laura Walker this why he was elected. They already trust him
Is it very common for an experienced deputy speaker to be elected as speaker? Betty Boothroyd was also the deputy before being elected.
The utter jubilation of the whole house when he does all his “firsts” is palpable. Just shows how widely respected he is.
if there was jubilation from the whole house, how did the other bloke get 213 votes?
I'd say it mostly happened after he was formally elected. A sort of "I didn't vote for you but I respect you" thing.
@@lampcrow5453 i think those who voted for him clapped for him making a big noise, as they would, being the majority and all.

We will look back, Bercow is a character, and in all likelehood brought a lot of people to watch the goings on in Parlaiment, people that would not otherwise have been interested. Hoyle: grit, integrity, compassion and from The North. He will more than fill the house with his honesty. His speeches might need subtitles for southerners, but I am sure that can be provided. Well done that man
I think after the character of Bercow, who went imo from fairly entertaining to liking the sound of his own voice, having someone like Hoyle (presuming he keeps his style) would be a nice change.
@@MrDioXIII bercow is a complicated man, in a complicated time.

I liked him as deputy speaker. Bercow was great as a strong, eloquent, forceful speaker, but Lyndsey Hoyle shows similar qualities but also with distinct humility, compassion and fairness.
Good that we've got a level head to steady the ship during coronavirus and Brexit.

I have had some respect for Harriet Harman in the past for her various roles and actions. I think the moment she lost me with the speakership election was when she made it all about identity politics and how she should be elected because she is a woman. When will these people learn..........it's not about your identity, your gender, your skin colour or any other factor over which you had no choice at birth. It's about character, ability and record of action. As soon as she played the 'I am a woman so elect me card' I knew from the expressions on members' faces that she had lost the race. So so sad...........when will they learn. Equality means equality........not special privilege based on your identity
Exactly! They have forgotten about the words of Martin Luther King jr.
Saigon Brit absolutely agree, she nailed the beginning of her speech, talking about how she has relevant experience of being in ministerial and shadow ministerial positions as well as a back bencher.
She started off with ‘judge me on merit’ but then suddenly pulled out the gender card.
@@JasonTheGreat18 Absolutely. I think she simply doesn't get it. The era of identity politics is coming to a halting close. People are sick to death of it. Even Obama has recently condemned it and comedians are now openly ridiculing PC/identity politics/outrage culture for what it is. If only Harriet had stuck to merit..........'judge me on the content of my character'. As soon as she pulled the 'I'm a woman' nonsense she probably lost 200 votes in this secret ballot.
Plus, Lindsay is highly sexy.
I thought Harriet quit parliament ages ago?
Good job to Bercow and congratulations to Hoyle! They are both defenders of democracy although some bias was involved. If you still do not like Bercow or Hoyle I respect your opinion.
he was my MP for a while. Excellent choice. Top man.
Found the 'No clapping' tradition for impartiality :
...."But the committee backed the applause ban in a 1998 report: "While we agree that spontaneous clapping at the end of a speech could in no way be interpreted as disturbance of the speaker, there is a danger that such a practice might be open to abuse and could lead in certain circumstances to orchestration of what would amount to standing ovations with the success or failure of a speech being judged not by its content but by the relative length of the ovation at the end.
"This might not disrupt an individual speech, but would disrupt the tenor of the debate, as indeed would slow handclapping."
well done |Mr Hoyle heres hoping you bring a great change to the house :)
Gotta like when the opposition remains silent when they know they've been beat. Kudos to the Parliament!
We live in wonderfully weird country. 😂🤣
Richly deserved I’m sure he will be fantastic in the role and do his late daughter proud.

No one can replace the great John 'Oooh-daaa' Bercow.
And replaced by Sir Lindsay 'Ordeeeur' Hoyle
John Bercow was not great. And now he is little more than the jester for the European Union. He was a sad, corrupt child that abused his position as much as he could.
A plank of wood would be an improvement on Bercow. He abused his position and was not neutral at all. A disgrace to his position.
@rob 998 He strongly tried to push the House into the direction of Remain/Soft Brexit
How dare you stand where he stood
I’m from Scotland. As always our vote is pointless. We need independent. I vote SNP. I’m 28. I’m tempted to go for labour to just get tories out. I knew this shambles all along. I vote for Scotland to leave the EU Becuase my vote is void. London out vote my country alone!
Best man for the job. I can’t vote for this Labour Government in the General Election even though I have always voted for them in the past. I will be voting for the Brexit Party in the General Election. However, Lyndsey Hoyle is the Chorley MP and the man I vote for in the local elections. He is fantastic, honest, helpful and loyal to the people no matter who they support. Congratulations to a proper champion of our country. Unfortunately this Labour Government is not fit for purpose.
Why not voting Labour?

This is worse than a school assembly. There’s more professionalism there.
Its called tradition, we are the country of Churchill, of William Shakespear, Steven Hawking and many other great contributors to making the world better and our parliament has remained the same for hundreds of years for a reason. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean its bad.
This is the legislative body of our government, where the current government and their opposition hash out some of the most important questions of our time. They aren't there to perpetuate an image of professionalism and pretend that everything is okay, they're there to grill each other and keep each other in check. The whole point of the speaker is to make sure that this style of debate doesn't get too out of hand. It's steeped in tradition and it's how it's always been done.
