John Petrucci JP-2c New Settings vs My Settings

  • Grammy winning John Petrucci just updated his amp settings on his JP-2C by Mesa Boogie. I want to see how they compare to the settings I've been using for the last year or so. By the way, my settings are very close to the settings JP was using before he made these new changes.

I see what John did. He cranked the mids up to make the amp sound like a real C+

I like the way your settings sat in the mix. I have used the same amp for years and still have presets I made through the years and it’s amazing how much it changed.

The presence pulled makes the sound so much more up front. I dig yours and JP's settings but his definitely cuts the mix so much more agressively... Awesome amp

Thanks for commenting. I agree, with the volume knob set exactly the same, his settings were much more forward. That said, you can always just turn up the amp with the other settings and it would sit in the mix just right. I think I'm going to try to blend the 2 settings together and get the best of both worlds. Always good hearing from you

Great timing Jarrod on putting this video out...will watch it tonight.😊. As I picked up a mint JP2C 3 weeks ago and they can be a challenge to dial in. I love your aggressive settings best...but curious to hear the difference.

Way cool! There is a subjective element to JP's tone that comes from the pedals on his "secret" pedal shelf he runs in front of the amp. His settings definitely cut through anything though! Great video!!

I guess its a luxury to be able to pull your guitar tone forward and into the upper mids when you have John Myung as a bassist :D

I could never get into this amp. Never sounds as mean and heavy as the Extreme or Mark IV mode on the Mark V in my play time experience, but you make this sound so good, Jarrod! You da man. :)

Wow, great timing with this video! My JP2C should be arriving at any point soon. I’ll definitely go back to this video and try out both settings on the amp once I get mine.
Both sound good to me but JP’s settings make the guitar stand out a lot more in the mix. It also reminds me of Lamb of God’s guitar tone, which JP actually mentioned himself in that video that it sounds like that.

As you said much more clarity with JP settings. Much more cut , definition and aggression. I can also hear the bass on the backing track much more clearly with the JP settings. Sounds a lot louder as you said so you could also turn down in a band setting.

I’m not as metal as most of you guys 🙂. So I asked John for less heavy approach and he provided this info. I though I’d pass it on:
“On the JP-2C try really backing off the gain and treble on channel 2: somewhere around noon or even lower. This will allow the bass and mid controls to be more powerful.
I’d try something like gain at 1:00, treble at 12:00, mids at 9:00, and bass at 10:00.
Also try not being too extreme with the graphic EQ curve. Start flat and pull the 750hz fader down just a little bit and push the 80hz and 6600hz faders up slightly.
You can adjust the gain up or down from there. This will definitely be less of a metal tone. Give it a whirl!”
    Excellent video!

Both settings sound good. John's settings cut through the mix better and would be similar to what i would dial in for recording(especially with a seven string you wanna eliminate as much bass frequency as possible in the guitar tone without it becoming thin or conflicting with bass drums and the bass. Thats what the bass guitar is for. Adding low end to the mix and gluing together the guitars in a mix/recording), but for jamming in the room I'd setup my tone similar to what you have with your settings or @ band practices. I like that low end from palm mutes moving my internal organs and slamming my chest lol. Thanks for the vid Jarrod

    • @TONEWARSgearshow
      @TONEWARSgearshow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for commenting. That's exactly why I set my amplifiers up the way I do, it's for playing live or personal jamming. If I was to do a recording I would definitely cut some low end out. Great minds think alike!

The moral of the story is, even if you are playing the same amp as your guitar hero, in this case a signature amp, just do you. Don’t worry so much about the settings your hero uses. Use the settings and tone you have spent time on carving out for yourself. Use what works for your playing. But, also don’t be afraid to experiment! 👍🏻 Cool video, man!

@@TONEWARSgearshow Yeah. I LOVE the tone you’re getting. It’s thick and fat yet has that really aggressive top end transient attack. Really good sustain too. Petrucci’s settings are killer as well and have that next level clarity that only he can get away with. We all know clarity will expose and mistakes. And I don’t think it!s humanly possible for JP to make a mistake. 😂 Just unreal technique! And that tone does stick right out front of the mix. Somewhere between your settings and his would sound killer! Thanks for the vids, man. P.S. I asked you a while back if you ever tried a Ceriatone Chupacabra because mine was on it!s way.
