    The studio originally wanted the parents to get back together at the end of the movie. Both Robin Williams and Sally Field pushed back saying it would give false hope to actual kids of divorced parents. They stood their ground and the movie is much better for it

      Yes, a parent who tries to be their kids friend is shortchanging them in the long run. As they get older they will have no discipline to study and probably never proceed past basic jobs.
      Also impersonating another person to gain access to their home would be a big red flag - one step away from kidnapping the kids, or worse so they will never be "apart". He couldn't even wait 3 months!
      Obviously the film is set up to be sympathetic to Robin's character but IRL the judge was probably quite fair about it.
      Some other great X-dressing movies would be Tootsie and Victor/Victoria.

    The reason why he was constantly calling Miranda as different people was to cover up the fact that he changed the phone numbers, make her think other women are trying to apply for the job and purposely being awful applicants so that she will choose Mrs Doubtfire and no one else.
    Daniel most likely phoned his brother before hand and asked him to make another mask so that when he went to pick it up he had it made and ready.

When their mother and I separated and got divorced it was the hardest and darkest part of my life. Luckily even though we're not together as parents we never have fought and have maintained a good relationship. As far as custody goes it never was an issue because we both agreed to joined custody and I can see my kids which are basically grow now whenever I want and it's always been that way. It's really sad when two people can't put their kids first.

Apparently the make-up for Mrs Doubtfire took SO many hours to apply that Robin Williams would just keep it on anyway - and even go into shops as Mrs Doubtfire during breaks in filming! And the main musical score is an early piece by Howard Shore, the genius behind the music for The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

In the movie he says “It’s not enough. It seems like a lot but it’s not enough”… and I’d wonder what was so bad about us that our dad didn’t feel that way. The mornings waiting on the sidewalk and him never showing up. He never changed either. He’s 66 now, divorced 7 times, and squandered every chance we gave him. I finally cut him off when I was 34… gave up that stupid dream…

And for you a sweet moment you see always turns into questions….I’m glad your mom didn’t listen to him. You may have even spared her something awful by being the catalyst of him leaving. That sounds like a horrible thing to know… that he wanted your mom to get rid of you. That’s beyond what I can imagine 😢 And then never knowing him at all. As a professional makeup artist, I have a love/hate relationship with the makeup in this film. As a makeup, it's great. Robin Williams can shine as Mrs. Doubtfire, but it hides him enough that it's not immediately obviously Daniel in a wig. The montage of Daniel going to his brother and his partner "Uncle Frank and Aunt Jack" (side note: a depiction of a gay couple, treated as completely normal; the kids know about it and completely understand. It's a minor point in the film, but for the time was unusual and progressive.) and this pair of makeup artists trying on different looks: such fun. Going from a wig and makeup on the skin, to small prosthetic pieces, to a whole life-cast and custom full-face prosthetic. A fun peek into what is possible with film makeup. Of course, each of those look would have taken several hours to accomplish (especially the full-face process); filming probably took weeks on that single montage. Which brings me to the part that gets me: how they make makeup look so easy. Obviously, it's a plot device. It's a means to an end, story-telling wise. But there is no way that a foam latex prosthetic in 1993 could be applied and re-used (by an amateur, no less) so many times over weeks, and still look realistic. And of course the restaurant scene when he takes it on and off multiple times: could never happen. That was movie making magic make-believe.
    These days, there are some high-quality silicone masks that are *almost* to this level of put on / take off / look realistic. But even these are not perfect, and are easily recognizable up close, especially around the eyes and mouth, and are not nearly as mobile for talking and emoting. So: still not a thing.
    But it's still such a fun movie. The makeup is a means to an end, telling the story of this guy who loves his children so much to go to such great lengths.

    Robin Williams was known primarily as a comedic actor, but, having gone to the prestigious Julliard School, he also excelled in drama.
    You should check out his other work, like in Jumanji, Aladdin, Dead Poets Society, Good Will Hunting, Hook, Awakenings, and One Hour Photo.
    His best friend and roommate at Julliard was *Christopher Reeve* who was best known for playing *Superman* from 1978-87. You should watch the first two, along with Somewhere In Time, Deathtrap, and Remains Of The Day.
    I was lucky enough to have met Robin Williams a few times at my old job, selling him some backpacks, and working his son’s birthday party. He was the total opposite of his persona - quiet and reserved.

    The three child actors (who are now all adults) got together recently to reminisce about their experience on this film. They all had wonderful memories of working with Robin Williams. Working as a child actor can be fraught with difficulties much of the time, but it seems that Robin was very protective of "his kids" on and off set.

    Blimey that was a quick emotional breakdown from Ellie... must admit I had to get up and take a walk to calm my emotions when she started (and im a guy lol). That start of the movie kinda does the same thing to me, when I was young my parents had similar type fights... they didn't end in divorce (they are still married 50 years latter) but as a kid they scared me into thinking it was coming.
    One of those comedic movies that also has some serious punches to the feels, and with a realistic ending you dont see all that often in movies, and definitely didnt in movies at the time of its release... the main issue i have with this movie is my adopted twin sisters used to play the VHS recording of this movie over and over and over and over (along with the movie Andre) it drove me nuts as a teenager lol, so i tend to avoid reactions to it from PTSD... first one ive watched.
    One Robin Williams movie id suggest, is 'One Hour Photo'... its not his usual type of movie, far from it and its not in any way what so ever a comedy and far from most of his roles, but its a really good one and no ones really ever reacted to it.

    • @SurvivorBri
      @SurvivorBri ปีที่แล้ว

      Robin's performance in One Hour Photo was so unsettling but excellent. His descent into madness was something to behold. And he reminded me so much of a guy from when I was in my early 20's, who I used to work with at this pharmacy / grocery store called Pharmhouse (eventually bought by Wal-Mart). This guy, named Stan, ran the video rental department. Seemed nice on the outside but apparently he was a mess on the inside. He was obsessed with one of the female workers and was caught following her home one night. They fired him for that. Seeing this movie made me think of that guy lol. Just crazy how One Hour Photo reflects that situation.

    • @NZBigfoot
      @NZBigfoot ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SurvivorBri Yeah, for me One Hour Photo hits hard since I can sympathize with Sy to a good degree as someone thats been ignored, and treated like a non entity by the world in real life and work (and not without me trying to fix that) and Williams plays that so damn good, even if alot of us hold that more on the inside... while id never EVER do what he did, nor did i have a childhood like his (more the opposite), and while people would look and simply see 'creepy weirdo' in his character, I know the same feeling of loneliness, obsession (more like insurmountable longing) and the thoughts his character must have following him around every day, and that sort of thing can literally physically hurt you from my own experience... its sobering but also extremely sad to realize 'that could be me if things had been different'.
      Although thankfully alot of people who watch that movie 'get it' and Williams portrail really helps put that across... Dont have to befriend em, but being at least nice to a 'Sy' or noticing their loneliness might just stop them from breaking... although its a pitty about the guy at your work, im sure the firing didnt help him much but he was by the sounds of it getting into the big-time 'no go' area of fixation. Hopefully he managed to sort himself out and got some help.

I still have pain from it but time has healed the would some and I have a very close relationship with my mother and a standard relationship with my father. My favorite thing about this movie is its truth. It's not a happy ending in the sense that the mom and dad get back together and live happily ever after. They are divorced. This is the reality of to many lives in todays world but it is what it is. The reason I love this movie is it speaks to the children and lets them know that it is NOT their fault and even though things have changed THEY are still loved. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

    It's worth noting the judge's harsh opinion, having learned of David's "lifestyle." The judge treated Daniel as though he were a habitual "cross-dresser," a "transvestite," a sexual deviant. Though that was not the case here; the disguise was a means for him to see his kids, not a way of life or a sexual or gender preference. But it was treated as though it was- and treated as a very serious harmful psychological condition. Much of society has come a long way on that front; actual gender-nonconforming people are, in many cases, much more free and open to express themselves. But in many cases the attitude of "dangerous sexual deviant" continues to persist; laws continue to be made against such things. Hopefully we will continue to move forward in that respect, as a society, and these laws will be taken off the books. Perhaps at some time in the future, the judge's decision will be baffling to most people who are unaware of the history of discrimination.

    Awesome review of one of my favorite movies, I'm so happy you enjoyed it! I saw this in the theater when it came out, and it was the first time I'd ever been to the movies where there wasn't an empty seat. The whole room laughed and gasped and cried together, it was surreal. Robin Williams was one of my favorite actors growing up, his death hit me hard...like I'd lost a family member. May he rest. Right now, in the USA, they are trying to put a ban on drag in entertainment. Many citizens believe that drag in mainstream media will corrupt young minds, which is ridiculous. If they do end up putting a ban on drag for entertainment, that would mean this incredible movie and many others like it would be illegal to watch/sell/download/stream. Without even knowing, your timing couldn't be more perfect. Thank you 💜
