There's a laser in the machines (at least most of them) and as the punching bag swings up it blocks the connection point for the laser, so once it's blocked it starts measuring how long it takes for that connection to complete again, and calculates that into the score, then obviously the shorter amount of time it takes to complete (the harder you punch) equates to a higher score 🙃
