As Nureyev commented during another scene where he was in the sauna with Miss Piggy (the real Miss Piggy): "Last week, I was dancing with Natalia Makarova and now I'm [dancing] with the lady pig". Such a brilliant dancer and great comedian: he also shows his comedic skills in his Don Quixote.
Finally!!!! That cast of course can never be supreceeded. I know that Dame Margot Fonteyn was the understudy, but luckily Miss Piggy was able to perform this iconic part herself , which became her signature role. She also made plans of performing this pas de deux partnered with Erik Bruhn, but cancelled it for ethical reasons because Bruhn was Danish and the Danish bacon export collided with her principles. Of cource many have tried to continue the tradition , but this performance has set the standards for this iconic and exquisite pinnacle piece of ballet art. The impossibility of reaching or exceeding the quality of this performance is most likely the reason for this pas de deux never being performed wether in The International Competition for The Erik Bruhn Prize, Prix de Lausanne or at YGAP. Miss Piggy later went on to triumph as La Sylphide in Bournonviliies coreography, and who do not remember her showing off her vesatility both as dancer and singer in the Westend production of FATS. We are lucky today to have this historical recording, because the ballerinas of today, although not bad in their own little way, do not possess the combination of elegance, stamina, and physical appearance of Miss Piggy. We can only watch this video in awe and admire the glory of the past. To be fair to Nureyev I must mention, that he did not do so bad hinself later in his cariere.
Hi girls, I actually watched this on the Muppet Show. (It was hilarious.). I didn’t have to go to the ‘history vault’ like you youngsters! Thank you 🩰🩰🩰🩰👵🇦🇺
This is absolutely amazing 😂 I am honestly surprised there isn't a Muppet movie called Swine Lake where they have muppets play the characters like their adaptations of Christmas Carol and Treasure Island.
When I first watched it I didn’t fully appreciate the skill of the dancer playing Miss Piggy, Graham Fletcher nor the cleverness of the comedy. Such a bulky costume! I’ll have to show this to my granddaughter. Hurrah for Nureyev in coming up with this wonderful parody.
Undeniable... you could not take your eyes off him. On stage, in class. Not new, but he had the "it" thing for sure. Saw his opening night, first ever time on Broadway called Nureyev and Friends. Four works. Many in the audience were seeing him for the first time. You could feel the collective awe.
I got to see him dance towards the end of his life. You could tell he was unwell, he wasn't really able to perform the big leaps of his younger days, but he walked out onto the stage, stood in position, and it was like lightning had hit the theatre.
I showed this to my brother who hates ballet, and even he loved it 😂 The ending KILLED us, but also the transitions at the first throw were so realistic!!!
Do you think you could do a video explaining the awakening of flora ballet? I always see so many variations from it at yagp and have looked for explanation videos but haven’t found any. I think it would be really cool to learn more about the story of the ballet!
I hope this goes viral! They did such an amazing job of adapting Swan Lake. I would never have known all those details if you hadn’t explained it! Thank you so much!! 🙏🤣🐽🩰👑🎶✨
@@balletreign I love comedy, and watching ballet - I love to see such a serious art form have fun once in a while! Thank you! I was going to say this! Not being British I doubt they would know of it, so I wanted to point it out as a comedy parody they should watch. (For anyone who doesn't know it's from a comedy show called The Vicar of Dibley.)
Funnier when you know what they are spoofing! I did not expect them to put so much thought into something for a kid's show. But did they ever credit who the dancer was in the costume? She did a fabulous job
The Muppet Show (thank you Jim Henson) is enjoyable by kids, but not just FOR kids. The creative team was (is) crazy intelligent and do not insult the audience intellect. Children and adults were introduced to many artists of all talents. I love The Muppets! 😊
Ladies Thank you, a true gem this week! Never bettered on television as a comic take on the traditional, even by the various pastiche versions of the Four Little Swans.,,,,,but forty six years ago and Nureyev now passed for thirty years so sad. Bless you both.
There is an interview with Graham Flechter. Nureyev requested a short male dancer for this and Graham Fletcher already had experience dancing in costume from… the Beatrix Potter ballet. I tried to include the link, but the comment got deleted. You can google “Nureyev muppets and swine lake” to find it.
Hello. Thank you for the time and hard work you put into creating these videos for us ❤️ Your outfits are very inspiring to me and I was wondering if you could recommend a few brands where you shop from, please 🌻
The ending music piece you are referring to is the original ending of the Pas d'action (13.5) aka White Swan lake pas de deux, but it was cut in Petipa's/Ivanov's revival. Nurejev indeed used it in his version as Siegfried's variation, but some versions restore it, too. Just to say: See it as a big compliment that I did watch this here as I actually did never consider Swine Lake as funny and I had no intentions to rewatch it. Yes, Nurejev is a great dancer and now rewatching it, I also wonder why I quit it. There are so many other parodies and references of Swan Lake, which is on the one hand as epic, famous, story, on the other hand, it has the elements right in it (such like the dance of the four little swans, I guess Peter Tchaikovsky had definitely fun with it (; ). Somehow the reason is that watching Nurejev's movie version with Fonteyn was my first (and very extreme) introduction to the tragic ending of Swan Lake, and so probably I didn't consider the parody particularly as something funny...it would take a lot of time to make my peace (well, Nurejev didn't invent it, so I can't blame him (; )
@@firstlast6109 I wonder now how I should understand your comment, as it's quite bold to conclude from only one example my whole approach to humor. This is here a personal story I shared, and this is here a reflection video of art, opening space for discussion. This is a strong personal thing here from my experience, and I do take Swan Lake always very seriously (;
ONE OF?! I'm sorry but the upper case exclamation was necessary ~ Nureyev is, without doubt (in my humble opinion) THE best male ballet dancer EVER.... And when he partners Margot Fonteyn 😶~ I am speechless... swooning with admiration! Anyhoo , like you say, everything is subjective. Have a super day 😺
I would like to make a request. Could you ladies do a video on the Lady of the Camillias. It has many deep themes and the music, whilst not actually written for ballet, must be amongst the finest of any ballets. I should very much like to hear you ladies speak about it.
Maybe it is a good idea to make a discord server so all the ballet nerds on this channel can chat with each other so we have a more connected community. Please consider that.
Hey! Sorry to be a Muppet Pedant, but the show only had a total of 120 episodes (24 for each of its 5 seasons). Nureyev was on S02E13, episode #37. Each episode had a guest star (Rita Moreno, who had already been awarded her Oscar, was on the first season and got an Emmy for her appearance in The Muppet Show), but Nureyev's presence did really make it easier for them to book famous guests.
I want to know the logistics of this. Is someone inside the costume, when aren't they, because there are definitely moments of how is that possible with a person inside?
Am I the only one who thinks this old muppet spoof is actually really fat shaming? Miss Piggy is a classy Lady an Nureye fantastic, but looking this just makes me sad 😢
It may be necessery for nerds not so proficient in the techniques of the art, to provide a runnig comment.for them to catch and understand the intricacies. The scope of this video and the Ballet Reign series in general is primarily educational!
The Ballerina Pig is played by Graham Fletcher, a former dancer with the Royal Ballet. I remember watching this back in 1978.
Thank you for that info. I remember Graham Fletcher, but hadn’t made the Piggy connection!
yes, and apparently the "ballerina pig" is miss piggy's cousin "Mathilda" according to some Muppet fans.
Thank you! I was hoping somebody would know who played her!
Thank you for letting us know! 🙏💖🐷
I watched it too…mostly to see Nureyev but it was a treat!
Props to Graham Fletcher for his performance. It couldn’t have been easy to dance in that costume. And iconic moment of the Muppet show for sure.
