Well all right! Great picks all around. Obviously there were many gems....Stevie released two, Reg's Honky Chateau hinted about the magic that was coming up.....Bowie, Todd.....great year. But.....my AOTY is my second favorite album of all time (Revolver is number one)........Exile on Main Street. Great job once again! Enjoyed the video!!

So, once again, I forgot to include an album on my list. This one being, believe it or not, Some Time In New York City by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. I'll place it in my runners-up between Clockwork Orange and Foxtrot. I promise I'll remember everything for 1973. ;)

'Something/Anything?' is one of my very favorite albums of all time and is perfect as is, no trimming required. There's no such thing as a perfect double album without the imperfections of something like 'I Went To The Mirror' to bring the entire picture into sharp relief. As any real double album aficionado will tell you there must be imperfections to achieve true perfection, such is the nature of the beast.

I will definitely check out Arthur Verocai-I definitely love me some Brazilian jazz (spoiler alert: Tom Jobim and Elis Regina are poised to swoop onto a top ten here in the very near future). I’ll also defend Mac Davis. Yes, Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me is garbage (and we don’t even need to mention the shitheap that is In the Ghetto), but he did write some good stuff. (Spoiler alert: yes, Mac will make my top ten in the not too distant future.) And I’m always amazed at how many copies of Harvest were sold. Who knew that so many people enjoyed listening to a dentist’s drill? Oh well…
    Here’s my top ten:
    10. 360 Degrees of Billy Paul, Billy Paul
    9. School’s Out, Alice Cooper
    8. Carl & the Passions-So Tough, The Beach Boys
    7. Let’s Make Up and Be Friendly, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
    6. Gabby, Gabby Pahinui
    5. Raspberries / Fresh, Raspberries
    4. To Whom It May Concern, Bee Gees
    3. Can’t Buy a Thrill, Steely Dan
    2. And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’, Michael Nesmith
    1. Sail Away, Randy Newman
The only album I’ve got that I was surprised no one mentioned was Billy Paul. I understand that I am an outlier when it comes to Carl and the Passions, and I know that Hawaiian slack key guitar is an acquired taste, so I didn’t expect anyone to mention Gabby Pahinui, but I did think Billy Paul would make someone’s list.

I recall loving the Tower of Power's 'You're Still A Young Man' single so much that in 1972 I walked the 2 miles down Eastern Ave. to spend my hard-earned steakhouse cash on a copy of 'Bump City'. It was from the local appliance store in the Baltimore area Luskin's ("The cheapest guy in town") which is where one went in 1972 to buy an LP for only 3.99 instead of the 4.99 that everybody else charged. Can you imagine the tears of sadness that followed when, after the 2 mile walk back home and tearing the shrink wrap from my carefully considered purchase, I discovered a copy of Arlo Guthrie's 'Hobo's Lullaby' inside? The corporate behemoth known as Warner Brothers had indeed let me down in a way so callous and uncaring that my mind still bears the psychic scars of that 15 year old lad's crushing disappointment. Never having considered for even one second in my 15 years that Arlo Guthrie was to be considered proper listening material, I returned the very next day to Jack Luskin's trusty television emporium to make the exchange for an untainted copy of 'Bump City'. Alas it was not to be, as the sales clerk and I came to the unhappy realization that their other two copies of Tower of Power's ' Bump City also contained copies of the aforementioned unpleasantness titled 'Hobo's Lullaby'. My music lover's heart was broken in two, crushed by the wheels of industry and a record packaging facility run amok. I can't tell you what bargain priced LP it was that I returned home with that infamous day but that doesn't matter. The only thing that matters about this cautionary tale is that- well, I guess nothing about this story really matters come to think of it. Except that, back in 1972, the cheapest place to get your LPs was the local appliance store and maybe, just maybe, that's enough.

You reminded me for when I took someone from the Ukraine to see Babylon. She said she liked it but didn’t understand a word :). The Harder They Come is a great gangsta film. First saw it on holiday in Jamaica when I was 8. They stopped the film during the cutting scene and forwarded it. I thought it was the film break down at the time! They stopped it a bit too late for kids not to see it. Hehehe. Arthur Verocai would be in my top 10 too. Picked it up early 00’s with that Madlib quote on it. Looking Though The Windows would by my fav J5 lp. Best version of Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing on it. MJ kills it! I do check out stuff you all mention that I don’t know, which reminds me to tell Paul to check the Roger Nichols and Paul Williams Promo LP We've Only Just Begun from 1970…. if he hasn’t already. Better than his debut I think.

"Ah, Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am!!" It's 1972 time and what a great year that we had in music. So with this year, I have 15 Honorable Mentions, My Top 10s and 4 Worst/WTF Albums (basically 3 worst and one WTF). So let's begin with 1972 along with "Rockin' Robin" before we "Walk On The Wild Side" with "All The Young Dudes" while feeling "Happy". (Gotta love doing these song/lyric references).

    1. (Tie) Stevie Wonder - Music Of My Mind/Talking Book
    My Worst/WTF Albums:
Gary Glitter - Glitter (I mean...)
Creedence Clearwater Revival - Mardi Gras (Shout out to Todd In The Shadows for doing the whole album on his channel...definitely check out the Trainwreckers section of his channel)
Anything by Jimmy Osmond (sorry but at least Donny doesn't sound annoying)
    1. John Lennon & Yoko Ono - Some Time In New York City (sigh...where do I begin? I mean the song "New York City" isn't a bad song but not only the live section of the album was a mess but the first song on the first side of the album that became a single...NO!! John...why? What were you thinking on making the song or even released it as a single? This is a second John and Yoko album that's on my worst/WTF album list.)
Happy "Rock Steady" Thursday my musical buddies Crystal, Paul and Tommy

Thank you Crystal for mentioning “Close to the Edge.” Definitely a classic. And Stevie’s masterpieces.
It hurt to see Exile on your hate list but I get it. It took me years to appreciate. But Rocks Off, Happy and Lovin Cup are classics. However, Jagger didn’t really like the album either.

    In o particular order:
    America - "America" & "Homecoming"
Carpenters - "A Song For You"
    Dr. Hook - "Sloppy Seconds"
Neil Diamond - "Hot August Night" (live recordings but fresh)
    Todd Rundgren - "Something/Anything?"
Frankly, the actual "best" albums during the early 70s were the K-Tel various artists comps with all of those great singles.
Guilty Pleasures: Perhaps the Johnny Mathis releases covering then contemporary songs.

Hey Gang, agree with y'all that there is a lot of ridiculousness on Exile on Main Street. The good tracks on that album all go to 11, the bad are definitely all 1, there's no in between, Loving Cup-11 All Down the Line-11 Turd on the Run-1, Shake your Hips-1. Feel the same way about Neil Young's Harvest, Out on the Weekend-11, a Man needs a Maid-1.
Some favorite albums of mine from 72, think weren't mentioned, Live Full House-The J. Geils Band, Stories we Could Tell-The Everly Brothers, Slayed-Slade, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band-Will the Circle be Unbroken.
    ❤️ Crystal's Stevie Wonder tee.

I agree School's Out is Cooper's last great album for a very long time. And when I got it back then, it was a one-side album for me for a very long time, not that side 2 was bad, it just didn't rock like side 1. But I have since embraced the entire album. Agree with Tommy, Ziggy is a natural choice for No. 1. Crystal wins for the most surprising but absolutely spot on No. 1 picks.

I do love Billion Dollar Babies but feel it's overrated. The highs on that album are very high but it has more subpar tracks than the previous albums, in my opinion. School's Out is rock solid until you get to the final track, Grand Finale.

I was thinking of what my best albums list would be while watching this, and I hadn’t considered “Elvis Now” (kind of for the reasons Tommy gave), until Paul mentioned it as among his worst - it almost made my best 😮 - I don’t hate “Exile On Main St”, but it’s always been one of my least favorite records by the Stones.. I actually like the film “The Harder They Come”-the soundtrack introduced me to reggae music and is a classic imo..
    My top ten:
    10. Curtis Mayfield “Superfly”
    9. “Chicago V”
    8. Seals & Crofts “Summer Breeze”
    7. Nick Drake. “Pink Moon”
    6. Paul Simon. (Self titled debut solo LP)
    5. Lou Reed. “Transformer”
    4. Jimmy Cliff & Various Artists. “The Harder They Come (soundtrack)”
    3. Stevie Wonder. “Music Of My Mind”
    2. Elton John. “Honky Chateau”
    1. Stevie Wonder “Talking Book”
Runners Up: Neil Young “Harvest”. David Bowie. “Ziggy Stardust”. Elvis Presley “Elvis Now”. The Chi Lites. “A Lonely Man”. The Stylistics “Round 2”. Al Green. “I’m Still In Love With You”. Nice video guys 👍

I'm certainly aware of Dominick The Donkey, but when I think of "it's-a me", I think of Super Mario Brothers. Ha. Funny about Nick Drake, I don't recall ever seeing that TV commercial, but I remember seeing a thing on VH1 where they talked about him, his music, that commercial, his life etc and that's where I first became aware of him. And yeah, Gary Glitter certainly had potential talent-wise. And yeah, I'd rather hear Joan Jett asking me if I wanna touch her.... but nevermind. Ha. And I know the Green Day song Tommy is referring to and while I am a Green Day fan, I friggin' hate that song and never got the album it was released on and I think if you talk to most other Green Day fans, they'll pretty much agree with me that the song and the album is pretty much shit. Kudos to Green Day though for doing what they did with the residuals from that song.
    Anyway, 1972 list time. ;)
    Runners-up:
    - Clockwork Orange by Walter (now Wendy) Carlos
    - Foxtrot by Genesis
    - Close To The Edge by Yes (If you'd told me years ago that I'd have a Yes album on a favorites list of mine, I would've thought you were insane. The track And You And I is especially killer to me.)
    - Exile On Main St. by the Rolling Stones (While I don't altogether agree with Crystal, I'm happy to hear her or anyone say it. It does get overrated at times even though I dig it fine myself.)
    - Who Came First by Pete Townshend (And Friends since he isn't the only one who sings their own songs on that album.)
    - The Slider by T Rex
    - Harvest by Neil Young
    - Dr. John's Gumbo by Dr. John
    Top 10:
    10. Paul Simon - Paul Simon
    9. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
    8. Clear Spot - Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band (I commented about this in the 1969 albums video. Yes, I rank it this highly for this year.)
    7. Talking Book - Stevie Wonder (Don't think I've heard Music Of My Mind yet. You're right, I should. Ha)
    6. Superfly - Curtis Mayfield
    5. Fanny Hill - Fanny (Might be a "hipster" choice, but I don't care. Then again, my no. 1 isn't exactly a "hipster" choice, is it? It's possible if this was by a "male band" instead, it'd be considered an all time classic rock staple, or just one that would be talked about a lot more than it does, but I could be wrong. Either way, it's simply great and criminally unsung all around.)
    4. #1 Record - Big Star
    3. Transformer - Lou Reed (Seems some Lou Reed fans are sort of turning away from this album, but it's still my favorite of his. Yeah, Walk On The Wild Side is overplayed and seems to be the only song anyone knows by him, but I can tolerate it on an album that also has songs like Satellite Of Love, Perfect Day, Vicious, Make Up etc. Possibly the best album David Bowie never made although he did produce it with Mick Ronson. Ha)
    2. The Harder They Come soundtrack (I actually like the movie, and yes, I did watch it with subtitles. Ha)
    1. Rocky Mountain High - John Denver (Yep. I do what I want too. Ha! If any one of his albums can be labeled a "masterpiece", I think it's this one. One of my most played albums. For Baby (For Bobbie) might be a little cheesy, but I don't mind it. His versions of Mother Nature's Son and Darcy Farrow are amazing. His song Prisoners is incredible. The acoustic instrumental Late Winter Early Spring is beautiful. And there's that title track you may have heard of. Ha. Yeah, it's my no. 1 for '72. :) )

the greatest year in music… way too loaded in terms of 5 star albums
