Kaitlyn Delia Richard Sherman was once asked in an interview if Walt had a favorite song. He immediately said that "Feed the Birds" was it, without a doubt.
I live in New York. I feed the birds everyday. I am 60 years old. I remember the movie Mary Poppins very well and believe it was Disney's greatest movie ever made to this day! I am crying now after listening to this song after such a very long time. Probably many decades.

It's interesting because as a child this song scared me for some reason, but as an adult I listen to the song and it is so beautiful and powerful and it has now become one of my favorite songs. That's why I love re-watching things or re-listening to things from my childhood, because my experience and perspective allows me to see and hear them differently than I did before and often appreciate them in a way that I didn't and couldn't when I was a child.
I always loved this movie as a small child. But now as an adult, I see the true message of the film - family. Family isn't perfect, but they always love you, even if they can't find how to show it at times.
srayj I know right.. i used to skip this song every time till i got 27.. it’s now my favorite song of all the movie. I wish they have an extented version with julie andrews singing it
Me as well. I think it made me feel depressed and that scared me. I think it made me sad because it talks about people (birds) being poor and needy... and I didn't know what to do with that feeling so it made me uncomfortable.
I think of my Grandmother when I hear this song she died two years ago in 2013 and in 2014 around Valentines Day I was in a party store listening to this song when I spotted a card that was to a Granddaughter from Grandmother and there were nice words on the card and then the song went to the lyrics "Though her words are simple and true, listen, listen, she's calling to you." And then I started crying I like to think maybe my Grandmother was giving me a little Valentines card cause she knew how much I love hearts. She also gave me a card for my 16th birthday and wrote a little something on it. It wasn't much but it's her handwriting and I still have it to this day! RIP Laura Elizondo 1925-2013 and Merry Christmas everyone.
Mary Poppins was one of my Grandmother’s favourite Disney movies. And this was her favourite song from the movie. She died a few months ago. I miss her so much!
I remember in Grade 3 our teacher, Mrs. Mason, had us sing the song. She was so pleased at the sound she went and got our principle, Mr. Gordon, and we sung it for him. That was over 54 years ago but I remember it clearly.
Rest In Peace Mr Sherman, thank you for making my childhood full of beautiful music. I hope you, your bother and Mr Disney are playing this together again
Mary used to be Berts nanny, that's how he knows her and is familiar with her magic tricks, and also why he's so cheery and happy about life despite being homeless and having poor paying jobs. their "relationship" is more of him having a schoolboy crush on her, and just admiring her and loving her because she changed his world from a sad little boy to someone better. She even says here in one song "underneath your blood is blue but you never used it to your advantage" which means he was born rich but rejected it all - lots of theories saying the wealthy banker Mr Dawes is his father and hired Mary as his nanny, but since Dawes was already older and too consumed by his ways, Mary couldn't help him the way she helps Mr Banks. Probably why she sees Bert often, making sure he's doing alright since his family was never made better. Still she was able to help him.
My own theory is that Bert used to work in the banks maybe. He had a kid of his own, maybe two. He hired Mary Poppins. Scarlet fever, or typhoid took his family. He was down for a long time. Until he saw the silhouette that he saw once before. "Mary Poppins..." He'd say with a sad smile. She brought back good memories, memories of when he had a job, and family... But that led to what brought him here. She taught him to smile again, to find happiness in the darkest places. While he was certainly much older than her usual charges, he certainly needed her just as much as any child. Then she had to go again. But he'd continue on, happy, become a chimney sweep, to help the orphans stay healthy as possible while they were working in the chimneys, doing anything he can to provide for his ragtag band of misfits
Also addition, he talks to George as if he knows what it's like to have kids, he's so good with Jane and Michael. So yeah, Bert used to be a daddy, lost everything, and Mary helped him gain back what was important to soldier on in life
@@annerchisline9641 No, Julie was an exceptionally gifted and proficient singer right from young childhood. Sadly her voice was damaged during surgery in 1997, but she was not dubbed in Mary Poppins.
I got a blueray disc of Mary Poppins, and this song just made me cry like a baby. It's all about charity, and Julie Andrews knocks this difficult song OUT of the PARK! She was 19 when she sang this, and very few have ever possessed her ability to enunciate so clearly within a song. Her voice was a wonderful gift. Thank you Julie!
She was still 27 when the song was recorded in 1963 (her birthday is in October). The film was not released until August 1964 because of all the animation that had to be added.

To me, the song tugs at your heart. Compassion, sympathy, that uplifting emotion one gets when helping someone that is trying, struggling to help someone else. It brings tears of joy.
this song always makes me cry. The Sherman Brothers really outdid themselves with this movie, so many great songs, but this one, well it stands above the rest. There's a reason why this was Walt Disney's favorite song.
This is a magical song but so, so sad. Still it is one of the best musical compositions ever made. Mrs. Travers/Mrs. Goff also said this song when she heard it in the film and did become emotional during it's reprisal when Mr. George Banks is walking to the bank at night in the film when she saw it at the premiere. Such a sad, beautiful song. Julia Andrews certainly sung it perfectly, no one else could sing it that well.
I cry a river every time I hear this masterpiece, as Walt Disney did without fail. When I go to London and visit St. Paul's, my imagination runs wild - I get reflective, misty-eyed and envision Jane sitting there feeding those lovely birds.
This movie was on earlier and I cried a little during this song. Mary Poppins is one of my favorite all time movies. And Julie Andrews had such a unique voice; no one can duplicate it!
I'm so filled with emotion and so moved with this song. To me, it's right up there with The Hunchback of Notre Dame soundtrack in all around power. This song definitely made me feel such an incredibly strong emotion I don't know what to do with myself. I'm moved to tears every time 2:26 plays. Amazing.

I loved this movie when I was a kid; the scene where the father was walking to the bank and saw the empty spot where the elder woman once sat always brought tears to my eyes.
It gets me bawling like Wade Ripple from Elemental just like that every single time because it really makes me think of my late grandma. It was her favourite movie along with Sound of Music. I was very close with her growing up. I was very fortunate to go see the musical version of it in my hometown with her, one of my aunts and my mom before my grandma passed away years later. It’s now been almost 10 years since my beloved grandma passed away and I STILL missed her warm hugs and smiles. RIP Grand-mère! 😢😢😭😭😭💝💝💝
Art in its purest form. Evocative words, dressed in beautiful music. Everyone may come to a different conclusion as to the details of what this song really means, from a song about loving your children, to a song about being grateful for what you have, to a song lamenting the monetization of charity. There is no right or wrong answer. The only job this song has is to deliver a message, to make you think. It does so brilliantly.
This is more than a beautiful voice. And it is more than a first time memory. The diction is extraordinary, the long notes are extraordinary, the way she holds a note through a key change is magic, the depth of the beautiful low notes is extraordinary. It is uniquely perfect.
this song is so beautiful and soothing. Close your eyes and hear it, it gives a whole new meaning in a wonderful melamolic manner and it seems that she sits and sings you asleep. This is my favorite song
I remember when me and my mom would load up the VCR back when you had to rewind it.. i miss those days.. this song reminds ne of those sweet and blissful days. I’ll never be able to go back i’m 20. Scared to go to college. My mom is about to turn 65. I think i’ll watch this movie again with her. Just because it reminds me so much of the good days. Before the stress. When i was still ignorant.I long for those days , when she would carry my little body to my bed.I miss when she read goodnight moon to me. I miss being a kid..
rest in peace, Mr. Disney. i really wish he was still here, his studio that was once magical is now complete garbage. he won't be forgotten. je was a true hero.
This was my mom's favorite song, and when ever it plays on my Pandora station, I believe it's her way of telling me she's OK. When she was alive, every time I'd sit down at the organ in the living room, she'd make her request. "Play Feed the Birds."
Update on my grandmother this brings even more tears to my eyes because she did used to sing it and her funeral was 2 days ago I had a special link to her and I found myself carriering her casket into her funeral
What a piece of masterwork this song is. The arrangements are magical, the lyrics so moving and poignant. And then to top all that, the soothing, perfect, and unique voice of Julie Andrews. The result is simply mesmerizing.
I’m going to be singing this song for my grade 3 exam. The first time i heard it, i didn’t know it was mary poppins but it sounded absolutely amazing since it’s my kind of tune.
I don't care how old I am I love this so much and I don't care if my friends hate me for likening this ever since I was 3!! I STILL love this and I just LOVE the early 1900s with all my heart!!....and I'm 13!! This song is a classic that gives me comfort when I have a bad day or just trying to go to sleep.
When I listen to this, I'm like an iceberg in the Mediterranean - I melt. In other words, I find it difficult to listen to this without shedding a tear.
One time I was watching the movie and my grandpa came in while this song was playing. He sat down on the couch and said “my favorite song” and then started singing along.
I cry when I hear this masterpiece. It's so moving, and Julie Andrews brings her unique voice to this in a way no individual can top, even if they try their hardest. The instrumentation and choral arrangements contribute to that even more.😢❤️
This was always the song I skipped as a kid, now as an adult I could give or take most songs on the sound track but this one just does something to me. I don't know if it's Julie Andrews singing it or the organs and violins or the lyrics but this song has a piece of my heart forever
When I was little I used to hate this song because it was slow and I didn't understand what it was about, but now that I'm an adult I can fully appreciate this masterpiece.
I've just been singing this to my 3 young pigeons who in a few weeks will be old enough and strong enough to be released (I'm still syringe feeding 2 of them) I can't wait to see them fly free.
My school was doing Mary Poppins for a play and I was the bird woman and they switched the singing around so I had to sing Feed the Birds and this is probably one of my favorite songs from the entire soundtrack
I'v heard this song sung in French, Italian and Spanish, all by top native singers and beautifully sung. But the English version is the most poignant, stirring and haunting of them all.
This song is one that always speaks to the soul. You can listen and hear a different emotion depending on how you listen but it will always speak to the soul.
Mary Poppins wasn’t a favorite of mine growing up, but after I saw Saving Mr. Banks, it opened my eyes, and I had a new appreciation for it and never saw this film the same way ever again
It's about compassion . Just two pence feeds birds and a beggar lady. Just the smallest act of kindness makes angels want to bless you.

And each day to the steps of St. Paul’s
The little old bird woman comes
In her own special way to the people she calls
Come buy my bags full of crumbs
Come feed the little birds
Show them you care
And you’ll be glad if you do
Their young ones are hungry
Their nests are so bare
All it takes is tuppence from you
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence
Tuppence a bag
Feed the birds
That’s what she cries
While overhead her birds fill the skies
All around the cathedral
The saints and apostles
Look down as she sells her wares
All though you can’t see it you know they are smiling
Each time someone shows that he cares
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen
She’s calling to you
Feed the birds
Tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence
Tuppence a bag
Though her words are simple and few
Listen, listen
She’s calling to you
Feed the birds
Tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence
Tuppence a bag

I remember when me and my mom would load up the VCR back when you had to rewind it.. i miss those days.. this song reminds ne of those sweet and blissful days. I’ll never be able to go back i’m 20. Scared to go to college. My mom is about to turn 65. I think i’ll watch this movie again with her. Just because it reminds me so much of the good days. Before the stress. When i was still ignorant.I long for those days , when she would carry my little body to my bed.I miss when she read goodnight moon to me. I miss being a kid..
Absolutely beyond beautiful. Sublime is the word. Sad and magical. Good memories. My parents bought the soundtrack on LP in 1966. I was 8.
rest in peace, Mr. Disney. i really wish he was still here, his studio that was once magical is now complete garbage. he won't be forgotten. je was a true hero.
At least Disney still does awesome things in my book
This was my mom's favorite song, and when ever it plays on my Pandora station, I believe it's her way of telling me she's OK. When she was alive, every time I'd sit down at the organ in the living room, she'd make her request. "Play Feed the Birds."
Haunting and beautiful, I forgot about this song as a kid but rewatched the movie and it hit me so hard, all the nostalgia flooding back
Though her words are simple and few,
Listen, listen, she's calling to you:
Feed the birds, tuppence a bag
Tuppence, tuppence, tuppence a bag~
Exactly!!!! I'm crying!! Such a wonderful song!!!😭😭😭💕💖💓💞
One of Julie Andrews's finest vocals. May the Sherman Brothers rest in peace.
God this song makes me cry, every time.
+Bob Blah Blah A TODOS, POR LO MENOS SE LES HACE UN NUDO EN LA GARGANTA, PERO DEFINITIVAMENTE DAN GANAS DE LLORAR.
Me too
I thought I was the only one😭
There is something of the Divine in this song.
A Heavenly choir.
This song gives me chills every time I listen to it. Truly a masterpiece
I'm so glad this song is here ! I grew up listening to this and other Poppins songs. Thanks.
One time I was watching the movie and my grandpa came in while this song was playing. He sat down on the couch and said “my favorite song” and then started singing along.
I get so sad that she lost her voice.:(
IKR
I agree
Me too
I think the doctor that botched her voice should be tried in court for crimes against humanity.
How did she lose her voice? I didn't know this happened
When this music plays during the walk; God man I get chills
I cry when I hear this masterpiece. It's so moving, and Julie Andrews brings her unique voice to this in a way no individual can top, even if they try their hardest. The instrumentation and choral arrangements contribute to that even more.😢❤️
This was always the song I skipped as a kid, now as an adult I could give or take most songs on the sound track but this one just does something to me. I don't know if it's Julie Andrews singing it or the organs and violins or the lyrics but this song has a piece of my heart forever
I was in a junior production of Mary Poppins, and this song was my favorite to sing!!!
I didn't quite cry, but it made humbled me and made me think of things other than myself. Amazing song for a child to hear.
Glad the company keep it for the 100th anniversary special!
The voice of a beautiful angel.
I love how there is an echo of this melody in Mary Poppins Returns.
When I was little I used to hate this song because it was slow and I didn't understand what it was about, but now that I'm an adult I can fully appreciate this masterpiece.
I'm sobbing listening to this beautiful song it reminds me of my childhood in the best way 😭😭
RIP Richard Sherman (1928-2024)
And to Robert Sherman too (1925-2012)
I've just been singing this to my 3 young pigeons who in a few weeks will be old enough and strong enough to be released (I'm still syringe feeding 2 of them) I can't wait to see them fly free.
I know this is seven years old, but how did it all go?:)
🥰
Rip Richard and Robert Sherman.
So well sung that it makes me cry every time.
without any doubt the most beautiful song in the entire movie!
This was Uncle Walt's most favorite song of all-time
My school was doing Mary Poppins for a play and I was the bird woman and they switched the singing around so I had to sing Feed the Birds and this is probably one of my favorite songs from the entire soundtrack
Now, why "Chim Chim Cheeree" won best song when this should have been the one is beyond me.
I wish I had understood the meaning of this song when I heard it as a kid. Now it just hits really hard 😢
I can't listen to this song without tearing up...
This song has always got to me. IMO, it's the best song of the movie. It has a kind of...mysteriousness to it, especially towards the end.
If I ever have kids this will be on my list of songs to sing to them.
Julie Andrews did so beautifuly with this role & this song is so stunning. It truly takes my breath away to hear it.
Walt Disney said this was his favorite song, not just out of the movie but all songs! So every time I hear it, I take a time of silence for him
this song always makes me cry so much and so emotional love Mary Poppins
Beautiful song, beautifully sung , the lyrics made so endearing & enchanting by that ONE voice! Love Julie!
"I... gotta... go. But thanks. On with the show."
-Mickey Mouse, 2023
I wish this song would be played as one of the best songs in Disney history.
I'v heard this song sung in French, Italian and Spanish, all by top native singers and beautifully sung.
But the English version is the most poignant, stirring and haunting of them all.
I like this song, her voice really stands out in this one
This song is one that always speaks to the soul. You can listen and hear a different emotion depending on how you listen but it will always speak to the soul.
Rest in Peace Richard Sherman, fly high. 🕊️
Mary Poppins wasn’t a favorite of mine growing up, but after I saw Saving Mr. Banks, it opened my eyes, and I had a new appreciation for it and never saw this film the same way ever again
