After I quit drinking, I cut most off duty contact with other C/Os almost entirely. I have a group that I still hang out with occasionally when I'm in CA even though I live in Michigan now.

Good topic Hector! I made a decision to separate my career from my personal life early on in my career. I rarely hung out with staff. It was just bad juju bro from my experience. It just seemed like officers that hung out together were always bringing their outside drama to work and at times getting fired. I hung out with primos, fellow Marines, and friends I made through coaching. Coaching travel ball kept us busy and outside of the CDCR realm. Plus, socializing with people in different careers was way more interesting bro. Partying with doctors, teachers and city workers was cool bro.
Facts JMG! You hit the nail on the head! The outside drama carried into the inside and vice versa. Plus if you’re always hanging out with co-workers you never get a break or separation between home/work life 💯

Officers go out, get drunk, words get exchanged, come to find out his partner buttering up Olive Oils pan and he only got a 30 second conversation with her, dude feels disrespected, shit gets out of hand, cops show up, dude with 5 years in the CDCR thinks he has respect coming by the cops because he worked the sapato in Pelican Bay on a order over. Man it's just all retarded bro lol.
Hey LT, I have advice for new CO’s and LEO’s, don’t hangout with your fellow young coworkers. New officers think they are John Wayne and will get in trouble. Young officers need to hang out with family and non work friends. As the officers get older, the officers no longer have the John Wayne syndrome and it’s safe to hangout. Trust me, I learned the hard way. Don’t lose your career because you think you are a bad a*ss.

I wanted to tap on putting feelings into words can actually reduce the force of unpleasant emotions. Dr Dan Siegal, Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, coined this concept as "name it to tame it". By naming what we are feeling, we reduce the intensity of the emotion, and feel less overwhelmed. I would guess it is challenging to go from the darkness of prison to the light of an extracurricular, then back again. Maybe practicing being in the moment on both counts could be beneficial in the work and in one's home life...❤ 🔥 Psychologist David Rock states, “when you experience significant internal tension and anxiety, you can reduce stress by up to 50% by simply noticing and naming your state.” INCREDIBLE!
