Captain - "Space Debris" expanded to 12 channels (Amiga MOD) [Oscilloscope Visualization]

  • I love the song but the 4-channel limitation of the original Amiga module is quite annoying when you notice it. For one, the Roland R-8's iconic reverb snare sample is quite long, but is always getting cut off by the other samples playing on the same channel. So I decided to edit the module file, and add in an additional 8 channels.
    The difference is extremely subtle, and it should be because that is the goal. However, if you listen carefully, there should be some noticeable differences:
    - the snare drum is no longer cut off by the kick and the hat samples (most noticeable on 2:31 )
    - Before, snare and kick samples are given priority compared to the hat samples when both need to play. Now they play without interrupting each other.
    - echoes are longer because there are more free channels to continue the echo
    - some notes were able to continue playing since nothing can interrupt them from playing

      That's the goal :) "Ever so slightly"
      The original is already perfect as it is. Just kinda unfortunate that the Amiga only had 4 channels, so I thought I'd try giving it as much channels as it needed :)

      I think that is actually how it's supposed to sound (kick drum and orchestra hit on left channel instead of right)
      Here's the original 4-channel MOD for reference :) th-cam.com/video/g341fXWPFgI/w-d-xo.html

      Wtf? I can't hear the "glitch" anymore! And it wasn't my TH-cam player as I saw it on ch5 oscilloscope and now it is gone. Have to listen again later.

      It's still there at 4:28 (I tend to mention timestamps that are 1 or 2 seconds earlier because that way one can get used to the audio playback before it happens. It is very short and sounds more like uninitialized data than an actual sample. I'll check the 4 channel version that you mention to see if I can hear it there as well.

    • @nkronert
      @nkronert 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ok, it is in the original as well. Consider my ramblings as a way to tell The Algorithm that this is an interesting video that more people should listen to 😊

      Thanks for the comments! Even if there really was some kind of glitch, I appreciate it (I would fix it and share the audio of the fixed version)
      There could indeed be a mistake, since this was done manually after all, but I did try to be careful and recreate things as close to the original as possible.
      If you find more weird things, don't hesitate to let me know. Thanks! 😊

      @@ltva8781 It's not like I'm hiding it somewhere, though :D It's always been available here: gitlab.com/kylxbn/nsfplay Thing is, I'm a Linux user, I have no clue how to distribute Windows executables, and I didn't make my modifications customizable (programmers call it "hard-coded" if you know what that means) plus, it is highly unoptimized (meaning you'll need good specs to run it without getting choppy audio) Either way, a kind person who is definitely more knowledgeable than me when it comes to Windows stuff made their own build so I think you can try that :D github.com/s0m3sushi/nsfplay-release

    The neat thing is that this could be done (along with other .xm modules) on real hardware with software mixing or TD multiplexing ^^

  • @MrDamian1530
    @MrDamian1530 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    @KYLXBN I have some idea. You said a long time ago
    th-cam.com/users/shorts2tQRlJH2urI
    that "replacing the samples in the original MOD does not help much because the iconic reverb-y snare drum sound will be constantly interrupted by the shaker and the bass drum, so if you want some authentic-sounding Roland R-8 cover, we will have to remake the song using more channels than the original MOD (which has 4)."
    Do you think it's worth to replace them now?

    • @KYLXBN
      @KYLXBN  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's actually my main goal, to replace the samples, but to be honest, the gritty quality of the R-8 samples as recorded by Captain (they said that they sampled it using a cassette tape, and then digitized the cassette tape into the Amiga) just get lost when we use high quality R-8 samples. I tried equalization, volume matching, and even some bitcrushing, but it just doesn't sound right. Maybe I'm just too used to how the original song sounds that any audible difference makes it sound wrong ^_^

      Amiga MOD music (and other tracker music) is closer to how SNES hardware works. SNES allows eight channels of arbitrary sound samples, as opposed to the NES's built-in waveforms.

      The SNES can also pan channels to hard left, center, hard right, or anywhere in between so you get extremely flexible stereo panning. Plus Dolby ProLogic surround 🙂
      The Amiga's 4 channels are fixed to hard left, hard right, hard right, and hard left, in order. Not much flexibility there, unfortunately.
