What are triggers? (00:26) - Triggers are things you can look out for that can help you spot patterns quicker. These can include things like curved vs straight shapes, changing orientations or positions or size variations.
Worked Example 1 (01:24) - For arrows consider the direction or shape they point at.
Worked Example 2 (06:15) - Consider size when you see very big or small shapes
Worked Example 3 (07:53) - Count the number of intersections, regions or segments if you see overlapping shapes.
Summarising AR Triggers (11:31) - The key triggers for each letter of SPONCS
Shape (11:34) - Look for connecting themes when you find curved/straight sides and weird angles. If a pattern appears neat and orderly you should look for any lines of symmetry.
Position (12:40) - Consider position when you see a regimented pattern with lots of similar shapes. Look for any relationships between the position of shapes.
Orientation (13:57) - Consider the orientation of shapes, in particular, if you see arrows, triangles or clock hands incorporated in the question.
Number (14:30) - Look at the number in questions when there are many regular, easy to count shapes or sides. Pay attention to intersections whenever you have overlapping shapes or if they have been highlighted.
Colour (17:41) - Pay attention to colour when you see questions with multiple colours or shades. Considering the black, white, grey, spotted or dotted shapes may help you identify the pattern. Filtering out all the shapes of one colour will help. There may be more complex rules or extra shapes involved in the pattern.
Size (19:17) - Hone in on the size when the question involves very big or small shapes.
UCAT Top Tip (19:39) - Build your own patterns and triggers list from all the questions you answer. This will help you find the pattern faster when similar questions come up again.
Take Home Points (19:56) - To ace the Abstract Reasoning section it is vital that you are able to understand the key triggers, to narrow down patterns, and to build your own pattern/triggers list.
