Thanks for posting. I am rebuilding an '83 GR650 Tempter. Discovered 2 vavlves are tight, and I need the tappet depressor tool. Your video waa very helpful
Is the RT mark the two lines after the letters “RT”? When I put it in between those two lines the valve notches are facing each other as demonstrated in your video. If I were to go on the dot between the R and T it would be slightly misaligned.
+BaltimoreGS's channel you say at 9:475 to not rotate the crankshaft when the shms are out of the valve buckets... is there any objective reason behind that? what harm would it do to the bike? the only unrealistic reason i can think off for you to give such an adivice is thinking that a couple of contcts directly with the valva buckets from the cams is going to damage the valves...when its not
allnamesarepicked this response is way way way over due but just to answer said question, what it does is get the cam lobe stuck in the bucket itself because it is a recessed area for the shims to sit in.
Hey, did you ever figure out what your high idle problem was? I'm having the same problem but I haven't replaced my shims yet, although I don't know if that's going to solve my issue.
After giving gas my bike will idle at about 4 thousand for about 30 seconds befor slowly dropping to two thousand. From there it runs perfect. Also when I give it full throttle it runs perfect. But for some reason it takes a while for the idle to drop from 4000.
skiwheeler I’m having that same idle problem on my GS500f. I start it let it warm up and then it just begins to idle at around 4000 rpm. Did you ever find the problem.
Balt I found out that the clunk sound on my gs500 could be the cam chain or cam tensioner do you have a video on how to check or replace that txs in advance...
Hey I’m having vacuum issues. The little hose coming from pair system isn’t plugged in anywhere. The nipple on valve cover where I’m assuming a PCv valve would go is not connected to anything. And I can’t understand the vacuum diagrams
I noticed that at about 4:30 to 4:50, I saw what looked like some oil that leaked from the top of the cylinder head. My bike has that too; would that be a bad gasket or is that just normal for this bike?
So the valve check & adjust as needed is at 4,000 miles, and every 4K there after ? Seems excessive checking to me, if this is right. I say this because most shim type bikes go 15K, some longer. Going to look at one tomorrow, would someone please let me know if my info is right. Thanks, yl
Thank you! You're like a human Haynes manual, this was perfect
Without you I would never have been able to do so much maintenance on my GS500. Thanks so much!
The Carolina Wren singing in the background is a nice touch. OH! and thanks for the explanation of doing the adjustment.
All of your videos are professional and great thanks. I am just getting ready to do my 2005 model.
That was a very informative video thank you for the explanation of the timing process good job guys
Thanks for the great videos m8,that's me going to be doing a carb overhaul, re jet and sync,Thanks.

Thanks mate, no doubt come in handy when I'm up to the stage of checking the valves.
the calculation for the new shims is great! im so bad at math, but witht this, it should be doable!
Great! thought I had to pull out the camshafts to change the shims like with my old CB 500 (shims under bucket). Gonna buy the tool now. thx
Great guide, I will be using it very soon since my bike just hit the 4k miles..
Great video man, Thanks for the hard work and knowledge
Nevermind you stated in video. Did you have to adjust the carbs after putting on that airfilter?
Props for making this video, it's perfect. Great job on the bike too!

Thanks for these explanations.
Amazing work guys. Thank you.

Does this help with the uncontrollably high idle problem?
Hey, did you ever figure out what your high idle problem was? I'm having the same problem but I haven't replaced my shims yet, although I don't know if that's going to solve my issue.
high idle could be an issue with not having a full seal for the vacuum. check your orings and the carb seals

Christopher Donahue Did you ever solve your problem? I have the same problem as well.
Nice video, clear & easy to understand.....but do you measure the clearance hot or cold?
Cold per the service manual
Balt I found out that the clunk sound on my gs500 could be the cam chain or cam tensioner do you have a video on how to check or replace that txs in advance...

What kind of air filter do you have? Do you not have a airbox?

Are you using metric or imperial shims
It sounds like it's imperial but your saying mm
Where do I find these feelers and tools to find the specs on my gs500f. I have been looking and can only find a valve tool and shim kit.
Got mines from autozone
Deeplydreaded yeah, I searched eBay found a nice metric set of feeler gauges.
si pudieras compartir el manual de de servicio de esa moto muchas gracias,.
Need some advise when I rev the engine I hear a clanking sound?
Very easy to follow, thanks.
i have a tapping noise upto 5000 rpm would this be due to large shim gaps
what do you do with the LE??
