    I know that in 1971, when Peter Cushing's wife died, he buried himself in work to forget the pain, but he's better than this.

    Believe it or not, Brandon, this film is based on a Jules Verne novel, albeit not a very well known one. Entitled Godfrey Morgan, it tells basically the same story that this film does, with the absence of monsters (I guess they figured adding monsters would work as well as Mysterious Island). Another funny thing: in the novel, Artelett is just as annoying, often being called Tartlet xD

      Good note, and thanks, but when even the Wiki on the novel describes this "film adaptation" as being done "very loosely", I think "based on" starts to lose meaning.

  • @SuperDevilDoctor
    @SuperDevilDoctor 9 ปีที่แล้ว +36

    Great episode as always! BTW: "Spanish John Belushi" is actually Paul Naschy, Spain's answer to Lon Chaney Jr. & Christopher Lee. He starred in a whole series of groovy '70s werewolf movies featuring the character of Waldemar Daninsky (WEREWOLF VS. THE VAMPIRE WOMAN, NIGHT OF THE HOWLING BEAST, etc.).

  • @georgeowain
    @georgeowain 9 ปีที่แล้ว +52

    Umm Brandon, I might be wrong but I believe this is based on another novel by Jules Verne called Godfrey Morgan; A Californian Mystery. Which from what I've read on Wiki the film does sort of follow the plot; minus the monsters.

    • @timeliebe
      @timeliebe 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Less stupid than really cheap-you can get Peter Cushing for under two days on one or two sets, then advertise he's in your movie, which costs a lot less than Peter Cushing being in your entire movie and actually doing stuff.

    Y'know, Ardilect is pretty annoying, but I still find him more sympathetic than Jeff. Uncle Tarkin (from what I can tell) forced him to go with his nephew. Why? He's a dance instructor. He's completely out of his element, untrained and with someone that he hates and who hates him back. I'd say he has a lot to justifiably complain about and be terrified of.

    I'm a bit late here - 5 years! - but in case anyone hasn't pointed this out elsewhere in the comments - this film IS based on a Jules Verne novel. It's called 'L'École des Robinsons’ known in English as ‘The Family of Robinsons’ and sometimes as ‘Godfrey Morgan.’ The film is actually pretty faithful to the book but it’s definitely one of Verne’s minor works and not really worth your time. And yes, Professor Artelett is annoying in the book…but not this annoying! Sadly, the ‘wacky comic foreigner’ was a standard Verne trope.

  • @richardsweeney678

    According to the commentary on the DVD of SHOCK WAVES, Peter Cushing's price was $3000.00 for a couple days work. Believe it or not, there was a time when just having his or Christopher Lee's name in a film brought people into the theater.
    He earned his $3000.00 for this film

    It's really a good thing the shipwrecked bunglers were inept. Guns can be made to shoot blanks, but if the 'survivors' made spears, punji pit traps, and other edged weapons and knew how to use them, there could have been some serious injury or death. Also explosions.. the pressure wave would have killed them and if not, the shrapnel would have.

    Honestly, with that set, that level of monster effects, and Tarkin and Vallorum, they could STILL have made a good movie! But noooooope.

    Brandon his uncle sending the professor was a great idea an amazing idea. In the top ten ideas of all time it is one of them. At least as far as the uncle is concerned. I mean he no longer has to see the professor.

    The best parts of Mysterious Island, by Jules Verne, are……the parts that have nothing to do with Jules Verne.
    This film would be greatly improved by having a Kenny.
