Girl....... I have to say this. Ive watched scores of gardening you tubers and you BY FAR are the funniest and most personable one I have come across. A pure joy to watch. Cheers to you!
❤So happy I've found you ❤ I'm in 10A and was in terrible need 😫 thank you so much 🌸 I've started a few sweet potatoes. We'll see 👀 but I'm gonna do your way for sure asap!
I have been trying to get my sweet potato to grow slips for 2 weeks now (it's store bought, non organic) by placing it in water. Definitely going to throw it in my bin on my next day off. And I'm going to do what you say and mix my compost w/ mulch. Can't wait to see the results! I think my timing might be off but I'm hoping to get multiple bins going.
I was at the Lowes checkout buying a beautiful ornamental sweet potato vine and the checkout person cautioned us that these were not edible, so I snapped off a leaf and ate it right there, LOL. We do like them to make fries sometimes.
We have clay in our sand. Last year my sweet potatoes turned out skinny and not many of them. And hard to dig. I figured out how to get slips. Lay some in a greenhouse tray w/o holes. Put potting mix about halfway up the sides of the potatoes and water them. If it's still really cold out, stick them on top of the fridge for a week, them put them in a window and they should sprout like crazy. I've got vines 2 foot long I have to cut and root again. 2nd cutting. My last frost date is March 15. So, I'll be right on time for zone 8b. I am going to try your mulch method this year, because our soil is so heavy, I think the tubers are fighting the soil. I'll find out, and if so, you saved my bacon...er, sweet potatoes.
I've learned so much from your videos, we are about to start our first vegetable garden. Thank you so much for putting in all the work and effort into making these.
Here’s what stopping me from growing sweet potatoes: curing them From what I’ve seen, it requires such specific temperatures of heat and humidity for a long period of time; therefore, it seems so complicated - - especially, if you get a nice big harvest. How do YOU cure them? 🤔 Thank you for your funny video - - these days a sense of humor goes a long way!
I love your videos! I've recently started adding sweet potatoes to my diet due to health issues. Not being a huge fan of the potato alone. I have discovered a lot of great recipes. Sweet potato with pineapple 🍍 cranberries 🍎 apples, even one with bourbon. I will be making that one for Thanksgiving. Thanks for the laughs & info!
I'm really enjoying your videos! We used to grow sweet potatoes as a ground cover for our school garden over the summer. We had tons of potatoes with very little care. Come the fall planting season we had very few weeds. Win-win
Omg, thanks for making it so simple! I've watched other vids, & it's jars & slips...blah, blah! When you say mix dirt with mulch, does it matter if it's hard wood mulch or pine? I think pine is more alkaline.
I like your personality. It made this video better. Lol. Have you grown Okinawa purple, Molokai purple, or Stokes purple? Or not a purple sweet potato fan?
Did you use any special fertilizers, dirt or magic powers to grow so many? I just recently harvested mine and I only got 2lbs. So sad, I had tons of beautiful foliage and flowers. So much foliage I had to trim it every few weeks: what can I do to improve my yield?
Oh my gosh just came across this older video. I was cracking up! LOL. I love your personality n enjoy your videos. Thank you for making it so fun. You inspired men have you thought of trying GreenStalk Vertical tower. It gave me the opportunity to finally start growing edibles.
Are sweet potatoes safe in the ground if I have a water well??? Should I put them in my raised garden bed? Or would a potato container be safer with my water well???
I love the fun you had in this video!! One question for you...after the vine starts spreading on top of the mulch, do you put more mulch on it, or does it root it's self and grow more potatoes?
Oh, I don't know. My guess is yes, you should be able to plant them the same way. On growing them year round, based that they originate out of mountainous areas, and what little I have read about liking cooler weather; I don't think they will do well here year round. Looks like it may be good to start them in fall and grow through winter. And south Florida may still be too warm. Google says they like weather cooler than 70 degrees F. It is always fun to experiment... so maybe try but don't be surprised if they don't grow
Just found your site. Great videos. You're funny! How far apart and how deep do you plant them if you plant in holes instead of covering with mulch? I've never heard of this before and love this idea. If you had one produce 47 lbs I guess maybe there is no real spacing method? Just want to make sure I get this right. Thank you! This is so neat! I'm in south central IN.
Hi Georg! 😄 I want to... but I have limited space. So priorities... pineapples just take too long and we just don't eat them ever. My neighbor grows them... so I constantly think about it... maybe some day. On to figs.... it was questionable how well they would do where I live... I think Turkey Figs can grow here. But the whole wasp thing was a 'no go' for my husband. But those are both great plants Floridians should consider! 😄👍
My dad ate sweet potatoes like candy bars …just threw the ends in yard when he was done. He passed away 3 years ago…. Still volunteer sweet potatoes randomly appearing shouldering in backyard!
This is possibly one of the most entertaining gardening videos I’ve ever watched. Definitely felt I could related to my level of gardening experience as a millennial who has only sprouted seeds in a science class in elementary school. Seriously, we should push to have all middle and high schools have gardens that kids can learn how to grow food in. Seems wildly more valuable then learning to code a toy robot.
That is such a beautiful story. I’m so glad gardening was able to help your son! I absolutely love watching your channel. It’s so helpful and inspiring. Now, if only can just get my garden to produce lots and lots of veggies!

sweet potato duck!!
Entertainment value 💯 Information valve…… “dig a hole and plant them” 🤔 Not sure I would have figured that out on my own
I’m glad to find your channel because i live in central Florida. Your channel will help me on my garden. Keep up the good work😊
I’m so glad I can help! Best wishes on your fall crops!
Awesome video entertaining. I am about to go and throw some sweet potatoes on the ground 😂

That is awesome! 👏👏👏 I love how easy they are to grow! Very cool that you did a school garden

When you say mix dirt with mulch, does it matter if it's hard wood mulch or pine? I think pine is more alkaline.
Nope. I've had oak, sycamore, pine, and palm. It just needs to break down.
Chick I dig you so much lol! Thank you for another video your awesome keep at it
You are hilarious. I'm so happy that I discovered your videos!
Yay! Thank you!

Too funny 😂
“You can grow sweet potatoes shaped like a duck”😂

What a fun video! I love how simple it is to grow your own sweet potatoes. And so many from just one! The duck shaped one was my favorite:).
Thank you!
You're too funny and you've convinced me to try my hand at growing sweet potatoes 😊
Thank you 😄 Best of luck on your sweet potato 🍠 journey!

Too funny!! Throw it in the ground! 🤣
Confused by the comment “once they’re cured, they can last a year in your house “. How do you cure and store them?
😂 “aaahhh just talking to birds...”
Don't we all!?! 😂
I love the fun you had in this video!! One question for you...after the vine starts spreading on top of the mulch, do you put more mulch on it, or does it root it's self and grow more potatoes?
Can we do the same thing with Russet potatoes? Can we grow them all year round too, here in South Florida? Thanks. Awesome vid!

@@WildFloridian Thanks. And yes, I'll experiment. That makes gardening even more fun!
When is the best time to plant sweet potatoes?
If you are in zone 9 or higher, you can plant most of the year but spring and summer would be most ideal.
If grown in a bin, after they show leaves, do you cover the leaves completely with mulch?
Leave a few leaves uncovered but otherwise yes. Best wishes growing!
Also I would love if you had a Gab account too. There is a huge community there that’s all about home gardening.

Thank you 😂 I would put them 3 to 5 feet apart just to help cover space quickly... but you could put them as close as a foot.
How do you cure them?
why don't you grow figs or pineapples?
Hi Georg! 😄 I want to... but I have limited space. So priorities... pineapples just take too long and we just don't eat them ever. The fig brown Turkey is self pollinating and does not require fig wasps
🤙🏻😂
how deep should my soil be in a raised bed for them?
My dad ate sweet potatoes like candy bars …just threw the ends in yard when he was done. He passed away 3 years ago…. Still volunteer sweet potatoes randomly appearing shouldering in backyard!
How much space do I need if I plant just one potato?
