Review, cruising around, and modifications to my 2021 Sun Tracker Bass Buggy 16XL

  • I am documenting the boat and mods done to it, because there is not a lot of info out there on this great little boat. This video covers a few of the problems I had, some of the mods I have done so far, and just some cruising and fishing. This is the first video I have actually taken a little time to plan out and edit. If anyone bothers to watch it, and it generates some interest, I’ll be happy to make some more videos, explaining things in more detail. I am a mechanic by trade, I’ve worked on cars, boats, RVs, and the occasional aircraft. Feel free to leave comments, criticism (especially about my fishing, just took that up last year, I’m a complete n00b). Boats I know, fishing I don’t, lol.

    Great video I am thinking of purchasing a pontoon boat and I like the 16 footer because it would be a nice size to handle myself at the dock etc. I also like the 18 footer as well but it’s a lot more money.
    I like the modifications you did also.

      Get the 18. For me, I wanted the 75 hp also to pull a tube. That 16 has like a 6 gallon tank.. just spend the money.

    This is great! I have the same boat, it’s awesome. Can you do a video on the install of the gas tank with the brackets and do you have a depth finder on the chart plotter, I was also looking for a detailed video to set that up. Happy Boating!

    Bought mine in August 2020, did not receive it until May 2021................but worth the wait. Rigged out with Electric downriggers, Lowrance electronics, larger fuel tank, dual batteries, radio, windshield came with the XL Select package. Can troll all day on 5 gallons of fuel.

    Great boat man. I know Tracker has the rep for being cheap blah blah blah but I like to notice the positives of a boat company. When it comes to the affordable line of boats Tracker has a lot of innovations such as their clever rod-holders, backrest-storage and several other things you just don’t see on more expensive boats.
    I wanted a Tracker Pontoon so bad I couldn’t stand it but my local BassPro Shop in Concord Mills (Charlotte) NC but they simply wouldn’t get off their lazy butts long enough to sell me one. I spent two summers messing with them until my brain finally exploded causing me to go find a Marina. I actually went to MarineMax Marine and bought my new 2021 Harris w/ Merc 150hp in about 45 mins. Yes I had to wait two weeks for the boat to come in and I spent quite a bit more than I originally wanted to but I ended up with a pretty good boat.
    I just added (for my birthday) a 10ft Talon shallow water anchor and I’ll be testing it for the first time tomorrow. 😂 yayyyyy.

    How difficult was it to move the gas tank? I’d like to free that area on my bass buggy but I didn’t know you could set the tank there. Would you recommend buying a bigger gas tank before removal or can the same tank be used? Also, did you make or buy the metal brackets supporting the gas tank..

    As for your fishing line, it wasnt spooled tight enough, and the base knot isnt hugging the spool. If the spool isnt "braid ready" then just add a thin piece of tape to the initial line wrapped on the spool. Worked for me always

    • @emkayusa
      @emkayusa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I just unspooled it, and tightened the base knot, made sure it was tight against the spool. Has been fine since, caught some nice bass in the 1000 islands with that rod. It’s my favorite rod.

    I have a 2020 16. What’s the factory pitch on the prop? And which prop did you switch to? I am thinking about going ss. I added a 12 gallon and kept my 6 gallon fuel tank. I have the 50hp also.

    • @emkayusa
      @emkayusa  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The factory prop is a 12.25x9, and I switched to a 12x10.5. But I ended up switching back because while the prop was fine with just me and flat water, loaded up with my family and in Lake Erie wind and waves, and since I had to put the restrictor back in, it was pretty bogged down. I’m hanging on to the prop until I decide what to do about the ECU. I’ll probably just leave it stock for the time being. I’m pretty happy with the performance, I just would have liked to have had that extra 10hp.

      Well since I couldn’t get the 60hp out of it, I put the old prop back on. The new prop was only better performing when I was alone on the boat in calm water. With my family on it, in rough water it would bog down at 4800. It would have been fine if the ECU didn’t shut the motor down

    Does it fit in a standard size garage?

    • @emkayusa
      @emkayusa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a chance. My garage is 20’ deep and not only will it not fit depth wise, but it’s too tall to fit under the door. The trailer alone is over 20’ long and with the boat on it, the motor extends another 4’ or so further aft. For a 16’ boat it is very large.

    Seems RV's and boat's use the same QC motto... We can't control quality if there is none! Those lose wire connections getting through a QC inspection is reprehensible, also the welds on the pontoons are machine welds and the other ones look like they were done by a blind person. Seriously how can they let that work go out the door???

So now I either need a new ECM from a 60 $$$$$$, or a used ecm from a 60 $$$$$, or a reflash which nobody seems to be doing right now, or if they are I haven’t been able to find them on Google.

    • @emkayusa
      @emkayusa  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I removed the restrictor in the intake plenum. The engine was designed for the changes I made, as mechanically the 40, 50, and 60hp engines are identical. The only difference is a restrictor in the intake and ECU programming. I changed the prop to take advantage of the increase in power. As for the warranty, I am a marine mechanic. I am the warranty.
