When British Railways Made The Human Centipede With Locomotives: BR Class 13- Enthralling Engines #1

  • In my own time I've been looking into some interesting locomotive types; and it just so happened that at the time Twitter was talking about the strange BR Class 13. After doing some looking into the locomotive, I thought it'd be fun to make a video going in depth on it!

    Those locomotives are very similar to the EMD TR1 and TR2 "Cow-Calf" units that were basically NW1 and NW2 switchers that were semi-permanently coupled together (A Unit and cabless B Unit) and were essentially used for transfer service at interchange points between railroads.

    Since building new locos of old designs has become a thing, perhaps the class 13 can see the light again. All you'd need is two spare class 08s and some tools....

      It’s becoming a bit more active of late - road freight transport company Newell and Wright have invested quite a bit into building an intermodal terminal on the site and I think DB Schenker use another bit.

    In italy we once had e321 and e323 classes
    These were the first (and only) electric shunters to operated in italy and were permanently coupled with one or even two slave units (known as e322 and e324) that were capable to erogate 780hp (more even than class 13)
    there is another detail that made these shunters even more unique: their chassis was recycled from 1904 gr835 steam locos and, as they operated until 2002, they are also the last remains of italian steam traction in regular service

    Add to the mix,both Alco and Baldwin made Cow and Calf sets! One especially interesting one,was the units on the Southern Pacific,as they were C-C road units! And there were also the Train Masters converted into Hump Slugs! The Southern Pacific and the Santa Fe,were noted for producing home made units for their own use,and that started in steam days,as they were so far from the East Coast,where the manufacturers,were located! So when diesels came in,the shops can and did the same!! A notable rebuild done by the ATSF was the CF7,which took,F7 cab units,and made them into road switchers,and the railroad got at least another 20 years of use out of them! More than a few short lines have them in operation!! Thanks 😊!

    It would definitely be out of the ordinary, but given how much Mario/Nintendo music you use, you should make a Mario related video!

    Here’s an idea - was there any serious proposals or talks of an articulated, mallet-type locomotive in Britain?

    • @Alex-cw3rz
      @Alex-cw3rz 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there was one on paper design by Beyer, Peacock & Co. Which was a "mallett-garrett" so combo design, an 8 cylinder quadruplex 2-6-6-2+2-6-6-2 behemoth.
      There were some normal mallett's actually produced but just for export.

      @barnabyjoy oh I didn't know about that one I'll look it up edit : just did it would have been made at the closest loco works to me if they had made it! Such a shame they didn't

    This is when i bring up the point of the EMD FT and TR units. Permanently coupled Cow Calf units from the factory from the 1930s into the 40s. A good while before BR did this

    • @ErickC
      @ErickC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bear in mind that experience quickly taught both EMD and the railroads that using drawbars instead of couplers just leads to an inflexible locomotive... hence why semi-permanent coupling didn't last long on the FT and was not implemented on the F2. In fact ATSF ordered all of their FTs as single units with couplers on both ends, including the booster units.

    • @tencents49
      @tencents49 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ErickC then again if it was “inflexible” why did EMD make like, 4 arguably marketable TR units, hell even a 3 unit TR3 existed

    • @ErickC
      @ErickC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tencents49 : Notice they didn't make very many of them... against a balance of 1145 NW2s there were 3 TRs, 36 TR2s, and 2 TR3s. For 489 SW7s there were 15 TR4s. 309 SW8s v. 12 TR6s. For 786 SW9s there were 10 TR5s. And they didn't even bother making cow-calf pairs after that.
      And you know what happened to those locomotives? They were all either traded in for single units and scrapped at a relatively young age or rebuilt as standalone units.
      Ask yourself this: why did so many FTs get retrofitted with couplers and why hasn't EMD produced drawbar-connected pairs since the dark ages? It's because now you have two locomotives that could potentially do separate duty when they don't need to be connected, but they're stuck together permanently. Utilization is money. Utilization is why nobody makes booster units anymore, either.
      The total number of models available is pretty much irrelevant. Between 1946 and 1955, Baldwin offered many more roadswitcher models than EMD did. But nobody bought them. Your argument is akin to saying that Baldwin was more successful than EMD during this period because they had more models available despite selling a tiny fraction of what EMD sold and ultimately going out of business while EMD was still churning out locomotives day after day.
      Also - have you considered that most of those TR models were offered concurrently because EMD was producing several different versions of the same switcher with different engines in them at the same time? You did know the only difference between an SW7, SW8, and SW9 is the number of cylinders in the engine, right? They weren't successive models. We're talking about a very narrow time range here. Half of the available models were based on the NW2 while the other half were based on the SW7/8/9. That effectively creates the illusion of a wider production range than there actually was...

    When I was a kid I was "enthralled" with the Big Boy & challenger (both built by Union Pacific) since they both had two sets of wheels and, as far as I know, they're the biggest steam engines ever built. I've heard the Big Boy alone could pull a mile (1.6 km) length worth of train with hardly any trouble.

    • @ErickC
      @ErickC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the train was light enough and the terrain was level enough, sure. The Big Boy might have been powerful for a steam locomotive of its time, but a single ES44 will outpull the Big Boy by a considerable margin. You don't see single ES44s handling mile-long coal trains in mountainous terrain... so a Big Boy definitely wouldn't be managing it. Power doesn't pull trains, tractive effort does. Power just determines the speed at which that tractive effort will occur.

    @ 0:07 Not all of the steam engines on this picture were not scapped: most or at least many are preserved.
    The Class 08 shunters were also used extensively by the Dutch Railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) after WW2 as NS 500, NS600 and NS 700 series from 1946 and 1998. 🙂

      I believe the Slave units were all withdrawn and scrapped with the Master ones being either put back into service or repurposed elsewhere? I wasn’t able to find as much on them sadly but it wouldn’t make much sense to have scrapped the masters IMO so here’s to hoping
