@The S Word - Absolutely agree. That would be Sterling Holloway, originally, who had one of those easily recognizable voices. Another one right up there is the fellow who narrated the Fractured Fairy Tales on the Rocky and Bullwinkle show -- Edward Everett Horton, who also played Roaring Chicken, medicine man for the Hekawi tribe, on F Troop. I remember first seeing him on F Troop and saying to myself, "I know that voice from somewhere." It finally came to me.
Holloway's voice was better suited for cartoon character's, though, as he did many other than Pooh, and was even honored by Disney for his voice work.

I have been going back and watching old cowboy shows I grew up with in the 60s. Pat was always a fixture in my youth. Though out of style the old cowboy shows are still fabulous entertainment. Pat Buttrum could occupy a screen just as well as Roy Rogers or Eddie Albert. It takes major talent to be able to do that. RIP Pat, my friend.

I didn't come to appreciate Pat Buttram until he became a regular in late 80s SoCal morning radio, KMPC, a station owned by Gene Autry. His stories and wit made me laugh and made the morning drive a lot easier. With that I found a new appreciation for his work on Green Acres and other shows.

Very well done Mr. Skinner. I always liked Pat Buttram. Although there's no telling how many times I thought someone oughta take him out behind the barn and "clean his clock", while playing Mr. Haney. He was a good actor and, after watching your video tonight , a good man. He most assuredly had the most distinctive voice in Hollywood. If you could hear the t.v. while not seeing the screen and heard his voice there was no doubt who it was.
Thank you sir for telling the Pat Buttram story. I surely enjoyed it.

What I never hear about in documentaries like this one is an interesting fact: BEFORE Pat Buttram was hired to be Mr. Haney on Green Acres in 1965, the Number 1 morning radio show in Los Angeles belonged to Bob Crane - none other than Col. Hogan on the CBS show “Hogan’s Heroes”, also starting in 1965. That radio show was on the CBS-owned, 50,000 watt AM radio station, KNX Los Angeles. Buttram was a regular on Crane’s radio show, Monday through Friday, and was always funny. Many Hollywood stars would show up as guests on Crane’s show. Along with Crane and Buttram, the stars would also do funny bits and conversation between the records. Bob Crane kept his KNX radio job for the first year of “Hogan’s Heroes” (just in case “Hogan” was cancelled, Crane would still have his lucrative radio job) and although Pat Buttram was busy himself with Green Acres, he still showed up several days of a week with Crane on KNX. When neither “Hogan” nor “Green Acres” were cancelled the following year, Crane left the KNX morning show, and Buttram left with him.

Mr. Skinner, I read where you stated that you "were by no means a professional". I believe this is why so many people enjoy and look forward to each one of your videos. Your laid-back, smooth southern voice has a unique calmness to it, making your narrations a sheer pleasure to listen to. Somehow, the listener ends up feeling they have known you their whole life. Don't ever change that. In 1982 I had the pleasure to meet Pat Buttram when he was visiting the Colorado Belle in Laughlin, NV. He was just a nice down home person to talk to. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into all your videos. We love them!

Pat was from the county and bought a large glass jar from the fair, filled with water and things floating around in the jar.at the Country store men sat around and guessed what was inside the Jar at night. a local girl teased Pat and laugh at him said he was a fool to buy the jar. Final scene Pat takes cover off of the jar and inside is the girls head. It was a very spooky episode and Pat played an excellent part. There is a small chance of episode on TH-cam! Thank You again.

theology or drama? aren't they the same thing? you gotta be a good actor to be successful in both.
i've just been reviewing some of my favorite old tv shows and "green acres" ranks up there at the top. its surreal situations and absurdist comedy just can't be beat. and part of that wonderful show's success is due to mr pat buttram's marvelous portarayol of mr haney. the writing and the whole cast of "green acres" was just superb.
always wondered about the lives of some of my favorite character actors. (and mr. haney was a "character" for sure) thanks for this tribute. i enjoyed it.

From "Green Acres" to the "Possum Park" of that Goofy Summer vacation, it's awesome to reminisce and find out so much more about our unique and down home performer. Stay safe everyone!

I met Pat in Asheville, NC when I was a kid, in a cafe near the auditorium where Gene Autry was performing. "Howdy, young feller," he said to me. I was about 6 years old. Thanks, Jerry!

Loved his voice like the voice changes as you get older. His voice was a part of that and a grow up.
