- Welcome to our HOTEL HELL series! This time we visit Pontins Sand Bay! Also known as Sand Bay Holiday Village!
The Room:
- The room was beside a green algae ridden stagnant 'river', so a lot of mosquitos and all sorts said a long hello in the night!
- There was no A/C, so the window was the only way to cool down, except...
- The problem with Pontins is that the ONLY thing to do is drink! and when the bar closed, people used the seats outside the rooms to shout and talk loudly, so you aren't getting any sleep (They group people's rooms by age!). So we couldn't keep the window open. No fans either. So we were sweating buckets all night. I think I got 2 hours in at least!
- The bed had bed bugs. I was bitten I think around 8 times on my hand and wrist. Luckily I didn't unpack my suitcase or clothing!
- There was no shower but there was a non-slip shower mat. Maybe it's so you don't slip while having a bath? But there was a floor mat.... I'm still confused about this one!
- All electrical appliances had the date left blank on the PAT test sticker (Electrical safety check sticker). I guess it looks better missing rather than out of date lol
- The TV remote didnt work
- The window didnt close properly (Found this out in the middle of the night lol)
- The hot water tap in the room was scalding hot.
- For some reason, when they change out the bedding, they put the bedding on the floor outside with all the cigarette butts and whatnot. I guess it's technically easier I suppose.
The Guests
- The average age of the guests was around 75. I think the oldies get mega rates plus some of the oldies pretty much live there (retirement). Some of them looked like they were literally waiting to die at Pontins.
The Entertainment
- There was Bingo and Bingo and more Bingo with appearances from 'Tony England'. Wow, Tony England!, better hold on to your britches!
Food
- All of the vending machines (apart from 1) were all empty. The one that wasn't empty had 4 types of crisps inside but was otherwise empty.
- There was a HUGE vat of liver and bacon at dinnertime. The bacon was turkey bacon... I think. It was way too pink to be back bacon.... Unless maybe it wasn't? 😆
- I think I overturned 10 'clean' plates before I found a clean one when getting dinner
- The canteen was like eating in high school. Endless rectangle tables. Drab decor; very spartan. Lots of eyes looking at you as you walk in. The old person stare is hard to break to say the least lol... I lost many impromptu staring battles.
- The Drinks, well, they had tea, coffee or juice. The juice machine had 3 flavours: Orange, Lime and Pink. The orange dispenses water at dinner time (But not at breakfast). The lemon and lime also dispensed water, so I had the other one. Pink flavor I think the label said. Except when it dispensed, it was cordial, not juice. 1 part cordial, 10 parts water. I regret not giving up and having a tea in the end.
- Breakfast was alright actually. Nice fry up breakfast. The large vat of scrambled egg was more wobbly than a jelly mould (I thought it was rice pudding until I was corrected), but other than that, no complaints (Other than the dirty clean plates)
Amenities
- The pool and Sauna - I think a lot of the problem is that they still advertise things like swimming pool and sauna as features of your stay, but the pool and sauna have both been closed for around 5 years. The whole pool area was just used to store mattresses and furniture. Why is it still on their website and also on Booking.com!? The sign on the door of the abandoned pool stated: 'No Pictures!' lol what?
- There was a mini golf setup outside which I definitely saw in the early 90s in Skegness, some 30-odd years ago. The same holes and the same features. I would never forget that cartoon octopus statue lol...
- Next to the golf was a bowling green except there were stones where the bowling was supposed to happen. I didnt think a bowling green would be hard to maintain, its just grass. I have no idea what the stones were even for! Maybe where they paid the bowling green to rest when they gave up on it.
- There was an 18 hole golf course, expect all of the holes were 10ft away from each other. I have no idea how that works lol. I guess you take it out of one hole and chip it into then next. To take the ball right back to the start and aim for the other hole 10 feet away from where you tried last time. Who knows!
- An outdoor gym. It was as rusty as hell. Even the sign for the gym was rusty.
- Next to the gym was a swing set. 2 swings were missing. The only thing left was a kids double swing. Bare in mind, this is an 'adults only' Pontins where the average age is 75 lol

I went there as a little kid in the 1970s. I must have been around seven years old. We drove down from London and enjoyed every minute of it. I remember going to the beach with Mum and Dad to watch the sun set every evening. For the price, it's not bad!!!
Yes it used to be amazing! I miss those days.
I never understand the "For the price" logic though. It's a weird take. Life isn't all about money and price. There's pride and a whole host of other feelings which people tend sweep under the rug for the sake of worrying about their wallet.
I have stayed at this camp many times on Tribute theme holidays. And have always enjoyed my stay. Many people come back many times. I think value for money its hard to beat

@@s34nTravels Go somewhere else dudes, cannot beat value for money , only a camping site will give you more value for your dollars/ sterling/ eros . Love Sand bay, dont rubbish our Go To Sea side haven, beautiful sun sets, Sand point, and surrounding areas, so sorry you "young uns" are so hard to please, Western Super Mare, Sand Bay, Burnham the most beautiful places in the UK, so sorry you cannot see this, never mind,

When you book the room you have a choice of Bath only, Shower only or Shower over bath. I can't see why you blame Pontins for the lack of a shower if you booked the wrong kind of room. You seem to have put in quite a bit of research into Pontins history but spent very little effort on your own holiday. It's almost like you were planning it so you could 'find' faults with your holiday.

We have just come come back from a long weekend this from the 16th August 2024. Couldn't get a seat by the dance floor everyone left coats there for hours on end. We had a car park pass but they have taken over £50.00 out of my account. NEVER NEVER NEVER AGAIN.

Those rooms by the gazebo are nice rooms we had one shower only no kitchette
I think they put us all together at the very very far end, away from the: families, permanent residents and anybody else! I'm not sure why! Maybe they thought we would drink a lot and make noise lol... But that was only our neighbors 😬

Yeah, that pool has been storing mattresses for over 5 years now! I managed to speak with some of the long stay residents about it!

I really loved cramming into the childrens swing and looking out into the distance; dreaming of whether I would be eating liver and onions or cottage pie later
I did a vlog in fact 2 at this site, the first time was good, 2nd time we had mice in our room and a mess in the dining room. it was freezing cold too... a shame. I had no issues vlogging but you have to question a holiday park that don't wish it's guests to film their experiences!
I have to agree with you there! It's very strange to go on holiday and you're being asked to not take any pictures of videos of your holiday lol

@@s34nTravels I don't think they minded you videoing your holiday. I think they objected more to you videoing other peoples holidays when they were eating etc.
Typical, books a value break cheaper than a night in a hotel and expects a 5 star resort. There is an option to book a room with a shower and not go somewhere aimed at retired people. The ice cream freezer obviously does not get tidied and restocked for breakfast. You did not see the live bands or tribute acts which is why people go there.
Yes, the age with no internet and no video editing skills. The perfect crime!
@@s34nTravels Stop liking your own comments. You are clearly eating ice cream with your breakfast and it would be weird to edit it in there. You both ate like dustbins piling everything on your plates. If you want a nicer resort with more things, there are plenty in the area but they charge the going rate.

The adults only weekend wasn’t something I expected. Seems we dropped in on a swinger get together or something like that. Sat out front and left the chair outside. We had several people knock on our door looking for something. We ended up going to dinner with someone and they let us know what was going on with the swinger weekend. We had no idea and didn’t want anything to do with the goings on. Anyone else get surprised with this? LOL

Ouch bed bugs-not worth a damn thing if you have to endure that! Tell the staff! They have to throw the matress out and steam the hell out of the carpet! For a nightmare like that, you deserve a full refund and profuse apology! This can give you an outbreak at home too! Everywhere even a 5 star hotel, check the mattress thouroughly! Steam the hell out of all your clothes and luggage! Shambolic!
With bloody bedbugs you would have been better off sleeping in your car or camping in a field! battling bedbugs-that's just hotel 101-absolutely unacceptable!

Stayed at Sand Baby for years, no issues, apart from , we bring our own bedding and mattress toppers. What do you expect for the money???? Cheap for what you get.. 3 course breakfast and evening meal! a warm room in winterr time. , I am not old at 65, thank you very much, And I would bring my family here x
