I love this show. An idea for season 2: seating the guest in the middle of the party (because I want them to be in the middle of their roleplaying and I also want their reactions included in more shots). Now that we know the regulars by heart, there'll be no confusion as to who is who.
This is one of the best episodes yet! Although they are all good, personally my favorite episodes where the ones with Matthew Lillard, Janina, and now this one with Simone. I absolutely love it when they get into character. Please let there be a season 2! And put Matthew Lillard on the permanent roster, if at all possible.

Ok but that ress sequence was utterly amazing! Like so many lower level parties just panic because they don't have enough gold in gems yet but this idea that you could collect bits and bobs from the adventures, things you could tie to them and use to bring them back, use as a way to key into beyond the veil, is so cool??? Honestly such a cool roleplay experience over "I have a gem and I'm going to cast a spell". I know each DM tends to approach it differently - but this is the first time I've seen it done this way and it was so cool!
Hahaha Veros has fought monsters and been neck deep in intense situations but he was the most excited and enthusiastic about tossing his friends and climbing a wall. Definitely my favorite moment so far. Had me smiling the whole way through.

Really liked how ya'll handled the beginning of this episode (don't want to give any spoilers). I think it was exceptionally creative - a neat twist on the "normal" way of doing that (at least I think so, unless it was a different spell than what I thought. Regardless, awesome). Lastly, very much enjoyed the series as a whole. It was a memorable journey following the party and everyone, including all the nifty guests, did a great job. Really really hope ya'll can find a way around everyone's schedules in order to be able to film a second season. Best of luck to all and thank you again for such a great show.
I am definitely a huge fan of Deborah as DM (as well as player in Critical Role, come back Twiggy!) and her circle of friends has grown on me with each passing one shot! It would be great to see the character sheets for these folks. The production values for this show are amazing and I am left wanting more each time!
I hit like the second "fastball special" got referenced. The totally-subtle-and-not-at-all-obvious Daredevil mask was cute too. Relics and Rarities is such a gem; I actually like it more than Critical Role.
This series needs way more views. The legendary Matt Mercers Critical Role Campaigns are amazing and are like the 800lb pound gorilla in the room but other campaigns on youtube deserve people time as well. I think Geek and Sundry actually funded and produced Critical Role and gave them a chance until their contract or whatever was up and they eventually left G&S to thrive on their own. Without G&S Critical Role probably wouldnt exist. I feel since people are prone to stick with "one" team it makes other DnD style youtube content feeding for scraps and its a shame. More DnD is better for everyone.

I think this is the first time I've ever heard Jasmine out of character. I didn't realize she was such a California girl! That makes me appreciate her orc all that much more.
I wish my DM's were more lenient/creative and willing to let character deaths lead to a new branch in the story instead of just going "well, guess you'd better roll a new character"

Rules nerd notes: 36:20 - Ulu can only fireball once per day? Ok, that makes the encounter last episode a bit less surprising as a DM choice. Deborah rolled a bit high on damage, like 34 vs. an average of 28 for 8d6, and IDK what the followup was. If Ulu had been able to do anything else major after that, that would have been serious TPK territory. Maybe she wasn't anticipating it being as deadly as it was with most of the party getting hit in one fireball last episode, as well as rolling high? I'm still curious what Deborah's thought process was in throwing that at the party, whether the way it played out was one of the possibilities she was anticipating. (That's not a criticism, I thought it was exciting, and totally realistic for some threats to be out of the party's league. But something you very rarely see in D&D at least in actual-play shows, as encounters are usually tuned to be winnable if the PCs choose to fight, or they get even stronger hints sooner that they need to run.) 54:50 - A paladin with a Str modifier of only +1 is unusual! Perhaps a dexterity build, using melee finesse weapons? Also, I thought they'd already attuned the weapons before even setting out on the trip. They said they were going to decide who was taking what. It would be crazy to have put that off for the multiple days of travel, since they could have done it during any short rest during that time. (I don't think they each have 3 other good items that they'd want to delay un-attuning.) I'm also not clear on sending Zora without any other party members. For table dynamics, giving Simone some spotlight time makes sense; she was pretty quiet the whole first half. But Rikki is also Small so could fit through a tight squeeze, and could wild shape into a fast shark or dolphin to pull people through the underwater section if necessary. If the overlook doesn't have an easy path up to it, attacking from range might be a good way to get some damage in without the sister(s) being able to close the gap. Unless one can teleport or climb walls. So it wouldn't make sense to attack without the whole party there. And once they attack, they need to be ready to pursue before their quarry can sound the alarm and get all 3 sisters together to handle the trouble. So taking a few potshots and letting them escape doesn't work. If the whole party had elected to go through the tight squeeze, they could have passed the shoes back and forth. (Or the DM might not have made it as tight? Some DMs might adjust the obstacles to be a surmountable but non-trivial challenge for whoever ends up facing them. If Zora hadn't had the shoes, would she have had to get her armor through separately, pulled by rope or something, or would it have just been an acrobatics check?) Anyway, I'm curious if the overlook was intended as a viable attack strategy if the whole party had gotten there stealthily. (e.g. via Pass Without Trace (2nd) from Rikki. I hope he prepared that for an infiltration mission, but the details of what they'd face wasn't clear until the day they arrived, and the DM is strongly hinting via NPCs that there isn't time to take a long rest. So no chance to adjust spells based on info gained on arrival, unfortunately. Information and time can make prepared casters like druids, clerics, paladins, and wizards significantly more useful than they are by default with a generic spell selection. Rikki also could have ritual-cast Water Breathing on 10 creatures, 24 hour duration. Even doing it the night before, then changing his spell list the next day to have a different spell prepared, if they'd had 2 days of prep time.) 55:00 - Breath holding is normally based on Con. (Fun fact: Paladins are proficient in Wis and Cha saves, not Str or Con.) RAW, a character can hold their breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + Con modifier (minimum 30 seconds). That rule assumes they got a full breath at the start of that time, not being choked or something. It doesn't specify what activity level, though; taking dash actions vs. staying still is a vast difference in oxygen consumption in real life. RAW, a human with no rope can swim 15 ft per round without dashing, and with a Con mod of +0 can hold their breath for 10 rounds. So RAW this 150 ft swim is an automatic success for the average human even without a rope. (150 feet = 50 yards is fairly far to swim underwater, just under one length of an olympic-sized swimming pool = 50 meters. But with a rope to pull yourself along efficiently, it's not that far.) But that 15 ft per 6 seconds is probably pretty energy intensive so you wouldn't get the full 1 minute of breath; pulling yourself along a rope can be done a lot more efficiently. (With a Dash you can make it in 5 rounds, 30 seconds, if the DM lets you dash for 5 rounds straight; the chase rules cover sustained dashing and Con saves to maintain the pace.) But RAW is not dramatic or exciting for this. Still, I wonder what the downside would be if she'd rolled low any of those times? You still have some brief time of consciousness if you inhale water, but you could easily end up dead. Maybe Caroline could come up for a breath at the far end and come back to get you if you don't make it all the way. But having to pass 3 checks (of unknown DC) even with advantage seems like a high chance of failure. Zora beat 15 each time so we don't know if the DC was that or something lower. I'm curious how exactly the dice informed Deborah's dramatic narration, and what her homebrew breath-hold system was. Or if this was more of a winging it + story-telling moment. The standard RAW system is really really bad if you run out of breath; after those 1+Con minutes, you can survive for another number of rounds equal to your Con modifier, then your HP drops to 0 (so you start making death saves) and you can't stabilize until you can breathe again, even if you have 3 or more successes. 1:00:35 - Seems like they're giving advantage and a +5 for double-advantage? Normally advantage doesn't stack, but their baseline normal activity of taking some deep breaths before a free-dive is already rolling with advantage. So you do want to be able to give some kind of a bonus beyond that after doing it once successfully. That streak of luck is likely not to hold even with advantage. For stuff like passive perception, permanent advantage does translate to a +5, because it's worth about that much then the number you need for success is around 10. (It's worth less towards the ends.)
All these guests that Deb convinces to join on are so interesting! I really hope she can somehow convince even more Marvel Netflix alumni to pop on! We already got Charlie in on the fun, and I feel like *the only person* who could convince Jon Bernthal to do a recorded session of D&D would be Deb! So I hope hope hope they do it.

I think Margosa might be some kind of creature or something from the way she's described. I wouldn't make much sense if it was her though, why would she help them?
It would be a cool twist, but it would be difficult to maintain the interactions between the party and the storyteller. The dynamic would be lost. Not a good long term plan.

I like the group, but I do feel kind of put off on the fact there is no real danger to party wipe as they all have plot armor. I'm not trolling or being a jerk, just honestly throws me off as I feel zero tense moments like I did in critical role.
I can't explain why, but watching this I feel like I am watching actors playing DnD players. maybe the camera angle? the general model looking players... idk... deb is lovely though
Spoiler.. What just like that she is back? I dont like it when death is so easily reversed in D&D. When someone dies especially in the early levels it should be irreversible.
Spoiler response . . . . If this was a regular campaign, I'd agree with you, but this is a game on an entertainment channel, and it's the last chapter of the season. Plus they have access to a powerful patron. I forgive all the other house ruling, so personally I'm fine with this.

Also, I thought they'd already attuned the weapons before even setting out on the trip. They said they were going to decide who was taking what. It would be crazy to have put that off for the multiple days of travel, since they could have done it during any short rest during that time. (I don't think they each have 3 other good items that they'd want to delay un-attuning.)
I'm also not clear on sending Zora without any other party members. For table dynamics, giving Simone some spotlight time makes sense; she was pretty quiet the whole first half. But Rikki is also Small so could fit through a tight squeeze, and could wild shape into a fast shark or dolphin to pull people through the underwater section if necessary.
If the overlook doesn't have an easy path up to it, attacking from range might be a good way to get some damage in without the sister(s) being able to close the gap. Unless one can teleport or climb walls. So it wouldn't make sense to attack without the whole party there.
And once they attack, they need to be ready to pursue before their quarry can sound the alarm and get all 3 sisters together to handle the trouble. So taking a few potshots and letting them escape doesn't work.
If the whole party had elected to go through the tight squeeze, they could have passed the shoes back and forth. (Or the DM might not have made it as tight? Some DMs might adjust the obstacles to be a surmountable but non-trivial challenge for whoever ends up facing them. If Zora hadn't had the shoes, would she have had to get her armor through separately, pulled by rope or something, or would it have just been an acrobatics check?)
Anyway, I'm curious if the overlook was intended as a viable attack strategy if the whole party had gotten there stealthily. (e.g. via Pass Without Trace (2nd) from Rikki. I hope he prepared that for an infiltration mission, but the details of what they'd face wasn't clear until the day they arrived, and the DM is strongly hinting via NPCs that there isn't time to take a long rest. So no chance to adjust spells based on info gained on arrival, unfortunately. Information and time can make prepared casters like druids, clerics, paladins, and wizards significantly more useful than they are by default with a generic spell selection. Rikki also could have ritual-cast Water Breathing on 10 creatures, 24 hour duration. Even doing it the night before, then changing his spell list the next day to have a different spell prepared, if they'd had 2 days of prep time.)
55:00 - Breath holding is normally based on Con. (Fun fact: Paladins are proficient in Wis and Cha saves, not Str or Con.) RAW, a character can hold their breath for a number of minutes equal to 1 + Con modifier (minimum 30 seconds). That rule assumes they got a full breath at the start of that time, not being choked or something. It doesn't specify what activity level, though; taking dash actions vs. staying still is a vast difference in oxygen consumption in real life.
RAW, a human with no rope can swim 15 ft per round without dashing, and with a Con mod of +0 can hold their breath for 10 rounds. So RAW this 150 ft swim is an automatic success for the average human even without a rope. (150 feet = 50 yards is fairly far to swim underwater, just under one length of an olympic-sized swimming pool = 50 meters. But with a rope to pull yourself along efficiently, it's not that far.) But that 15 ft per 6 seconds is probably pretty energy intensive so you wouldn't get the full 1 minute of breath; pulling yourself along a rope can be done a lot more efficiently.
(With a Dash you can make it in 5 rounds, 30 seconds, if the DM lets you dash for 5 rounds straight; the chase rules cover sustained dashing and Con saves to maintain the pace.)
But RAW is not dramatic or exciting for this. Still, I wonder what the downside would be if she'd rolled low any of those times? You still have some brief time of consciousness if you inhale water, but you could easily end up dead. Maybe Caroline could come up for a breath at the far end and come back to get you if you don't make it all the way. But having to pass 3 checks (of unknown DC) even with advantage seems like a high chance of failure. Zora beat 15 each time so we don't know if the DC was that or something lower.
I'm curious how exactly the dice informed Deborah's dramatic narration, and what her homebrew breath-hold system was. Or if this was more of a winging it + story-telling moment.
The standard RAW system is really really bad if you run out of breath; after those 1+Con minutes, you can survive for another number of rounds equal to your Con modifier, then your HP drops to 0 (so you start making death saves) and you can't stabilize until you can breathe again, even if you have 3 or more successes.
1:00:35 - Seems like they're giving advantage and a +5 for double-advantage? Normally advantage doesn't stack, but their baseline normal activity of taking some deep breaths before a free-dive is already rolling with advantage. So you do want to be able to give some kind of a bonus beyond that after doing it once successfully. That streak of luck is likely not to hold even with advantage.
For stuff like passive perception, permanent advantage does translate to a +5, because it's worth about that much then the number you need for success is around 10. (It's worth less towards the ends.)

I like the group, but I do feel kind of put off on the fact there is no real danger to party wipe as they all have plot armor. I'm not trolling or being a jerk, just honestly throws me off as I feel zero tense moments like I did in critical role.

If this was a regular campaign, I'd agree with you, but this is a game on an entertainment channel, and it's the last chapter of the season. Plus they have access to a powerful patron. I forgive all the other house ruling, so personally I'm fine with this.
