@@lucythereader Excellent. Advanced novels for advanced readers would probably have to be chopped up into specialized sections: Classical Period; Medieval Period; Golden Age of English Lit. 1575-1660; 19thC novel to 1920; the Modern novel; Post & Post-Post Modern novel; novels of the non-Western World, etc. Whether you'd wanna do specialized recs for what would be perhaps/probably a smaller audience I'll leave in your more than quite capable hands.

Some good recommendations here Lucy! Du Maurier is... phenomenal. I love her writing style. Pace. Grace. Gorgeous attention to detail. And a sprinkling of Gothic. Jamaica Inn is my go to and must read for everyone. I'll order My Cousin Rachel. I have CC Farm on my Kindle coming up.
I'd add some Dickens. Love Dickens. Oliver Twist or Great Expectations for some of the finest characters and Victorian coincidence. Nicholas Nickelby if someone were going more ambitious for length.
Persuasion's fantastic. Challenging. But so rewarding. I love Emma.
    Great video!

I love (LOVE) "North and South"; the book and the BBC adaptation. I find both endings very sweet and tender, but... I mean... Richard Armitage. Come on.

I just cannot imagine my life as a reader without classics! I think there’s a classic out there for everyone you just have to look out for it and leave al the apprehension against classics. I’d add to the list, The Woman im White by Wilkie Collins and The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton, such great books!

Wonderful encouragement and a great list of starters! And although not everyone will agree with this, I utilize Wikipedia and other on-line resources for literary analysis and character lists, if a story seems confusing and I am having trouble following the story line. I am currently reading Hard Times by Charles Dickens, and without some outside help I would have given up on it, since the novel is particularly challenging.

Ohhh so good! I've read all of these except for Du Maurier (I know, I know, terrible!! but I have Rebecca and I'm so excited to finally get to it!) and I agree, I think they'd be really good "introductory" classics.

I *really* don't buy the length argument. I mean, yes, 19th century novels often tended to be serialised and extended to considerable length, but it's not like authors don't write long books these days. Most of Stephen King's books are 500 pages plus, and a few weigh in over a thousand. And length is a complicated issue anyway. My most recent read was Goethe's Elective Affinities, which is about 300 pages but felt twice as long. I've read much longer books that didn't drag nearly as much.

  • @Imaginetheday1967
    @Imaginetheday1967 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I got into classics by watching the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, then reading the book. I always recommend that for people who are intimidated by the book. You have some great recommendations here. I've had My Cousin Rachel on my shelf for awhile, but haven't read it. I'll definitely move it up on my TBR.
I read The Three Musketeers last year, and while I didn't love it, it was so incredibly easy to read. I was quite surprised. It's very long, so probably not for beginners, but it's not one to be afraid of. I'm really looking forward to reading The Count of Monte Cristo eventually.

so i read My Cousin Rachel at the start of the month and even though i'v read lots of books since its still so present in my mind/ what an incredible book! and agreed about the ending i had such a book hangover after it , i'm reading around the world in 80 days atm and finding that a quicker book than expected, also love cold comfort farm, not sure if you've read anything by Nancy Mitfords but her books have a similar sense of humour, also if people are sci fi fans than something by H G wells or John Wyndham might be a good road into classics as their books are generally pretty short/ page turning,

Great video. I dabbled in classics over ten years ago. On this list I’ve read Persuasion and Sherlock Holmes, both I would definitely consider rereading at some point and time. Have you ever read “The Blue Castle” by L. M. Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green Gables? It’s my favorite book that no one seems to have heard of.

I loved North and South when I read it! Will definetly check the movie!

Pretty good recommendations both for beginners and non beginners! (A Study in Scarlet was actually one of my first classic reads back when I was about eleven and it got me hooked into Victorian literature forever) as for Elizabeth Gaskell, I'm just curious, have you read Wives and Daughters? If not you really really must! I, for my part, will run to read North and South and A Room with a View (before the summer is over, following your advice) so thank you for both recommendations!

    • @MLawrence1941

Also, another question!! I have an unpopular opinion about Jane Austen (as in, I admire her first quality writing but I can't stand her plots! So naïve and cheery! Lacking all fire, passion and warm blood I appreciate) Would Persuasion be a good way to change my mind? I'd really like to!

Lucy, I endeavor to read Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice, my first Jane Austen novel. I hope to soon read Persuasion as well. I adore that you share my love of reading classic literature. You are the one that actuated me to start reading the Bronte sisters. My Cousin Rachel seems like a gothic novel. I love you 💕❤️😘

I would recommend starting out with The Diary of A Young Girl by Anne Frank, On The Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. These classics are extremely easy to read and contain the literary value they deserve.

Hi, If you’re looking for something different you could read classical adventure novels like White Fang or Moby Dick but I don’t know how much you would enjoy then.
All I can say ist that a book that really took me by surprise and thought me a lot about the time is “nothing new on the western front” by Remarque, it mesmerized me in a strange way but the best way nonetheless.

You should've gone to university a writer needs interaction. You don't need to go to loads of parties if you don't want to or drink. I am certainly no drinker. By the way I have read north and south and I am glad that I share my opinion with you that it is like pride and prejudice. One thing Elizabeth gaskill has which makes me unhappy is innocent people die both in Mary Barton and north and south in particular someone who is trying to do good

  • @stevecharters8965

'My Cousin Rachel' has an emasculated and psychologically unbelievable protagonist - 'Rebecca ' is a better choice; 'Cranford' rather than 'North and South' for beginners, and 'Northanger Abbey' rather than 'Persuasion.'

Classics. 😂😂😂 This is some big word for books two hundred years old and only in English. For easy classics try some Aristophanes' comedies. So much racy humor.
