Maybe one of Longlegs' goals was to transcend his physical body. He put a bit of his own soul in every metal ball that he put into the dolls. It's why he says, “ I won't only be in here - I'll be a little bit of everywhere. Waiting...in the wings...in the Father's wings!” He then kills himself, knowing his evil spirit and influence lives on. It's his soul on the telephone that tells Lee about Ruby's birthday party. A part of Longlegs' spirit is in Ruby's doll. And it's implied that the spirit of Longlegs possesses Lee at the end of the movie. It's why he blows a kiss to the audience at the very end, as if to say “We did it. The Man Downstairs and I won.” Of course, that's all just a metaphor to show that it doesn't matter if evil people like Longlegs physically die - their evil, and the consequences of their evil, live on long after them.

God, i want to love this movie so much. It was sitting at an 8 or 9 until the 3rd act. It felt so rushed and undercut the mystery by staight up saying, "Satan did it." I would've been happier with a final confrontation with longlegs leading to his death and a bunch of unanswered questions. Which would've made the audience debate if it was actually Satan or just a crazy guy(to me, that's a more interesting conversation). All in all 6/10

@@thehotel5758 Agree it was a mess plot wise. Soooo many holes. But great acting and cinematography and atmosphere.
It was a 6/10 - that's not bad, but it was an 8 or a 9 for me until the half baked conclusion that doesn't tie up any of the loose plot threads.
I think they threw a lot of spooky ideas in a basket (secret codes, killings in a date pattern, possessed dolls, Satan worship) and shook the basket real hard and wherever the ideas landed was the script.
None of it is -really- tied together. You could ask why any of what happens in the movie is happening (that was my question). And it turns out the motive was as simple as "Hail Satan" because... ooooh, spooky.

The film after I let it settle made sense. It's kinda a feature length shock visualization in a world shook by a possession. Sure cage is the vikian but the ai called villain gives himself ups, cooperates and lives as a law abiding citizen. He's. Clearly pisses, curse to carry out the devil work and like the mother have crafted a way to use possession as a means to get others to do the dirty work. I saw Kong legs as a tortured tournamented man's only driven crazy by his cursed purpose. Does that excuse his actions ? By no means I think the character is responsible for unleashing the evil. I think the film it self acts as a conduit of some sort or gateway for evil.

@@blackmanwithcomputer You know, - potential spoilers - the "surprise" villain was more interesting than Longlegs himself. I was never really scared or creeped out by Longlegs in the film as he never lived up to the way the trailers set him up. Just a somewhat effeminate serial killer about as well developed as a comic book villain. And the fact that he's a Satanist added little.
On the other hand, the entire "it's Satanic" reveal is a bit tired and honestly kinda laughable. At least movies like Hereditary or The Last Exorcism add a little bit to it, but considering we've had actual cult murders and other violence from Jonestown to Branch Davidians to all sorts of New Age cults and even Hare Krishnas, but horror movies like this one and the Conjuring series still use Satanists as the villains is just kinda eye-rolling. Like most possession films (except The Evil Dead) it never really lands for me. He might as well been a member of the Cult of Cthulhu - at least that would have been a little more interesting if not any more original.
However, "Mother Exposition" came off a lot more complex and insidious as far as her relation to the protagonist.

    ----SPOILERS---
My take on the ending is that we are witnessing the whole process begin again.
In the opening scene, Long legs chose/knew Lee (even as a child) to be his eventual successor and her mother to be his apprentice.
In the ending, Lee has taken Longlegs mantle, with the detectives daughter becoming her eventual successor.
As for her apprentice, we, the audience, just took the mother’s role. We witnessed the act and ensured it was done. And we now, in essence, discuss and “spread” it.
My other thought is that Lee has possibly been the living embodiment of satan the whole time.
As a child, Lee seemed to sense Longlegs arrival to her house.
And there are her mother’s numerous references of never having any friends or family come visit.
When Longlegs looks at Lee and says, “Hail, satan”, it might not have been just a vocal declaration of his loyalty to death, but a direct salute to Lee, his master, after she told him that his “work was done”.
And if I’m not mistaken, take a look at the barn doors (x marks the spot). The insignia on the barn doors (the one that is the actual design of the door; not the little x’s) is the same symbol pictured in the 9 levels of hell book that is shown a few scenes prior - (the symbol under the inverted triangle).

I might be absolutely completely misinterpreting the ending…BUT. I’m choosing to look deeper into that running out of bullets, there’s no way it’s a coincidence, it’s emphasized too much to be just nothing.
What I interpret it is, throughout the film the killers of the families murder and suicide while being confused and not in control. What I think happened is Lee is in a trance and the devils making her see what they want her to see. That Carter is trying to murder his family. Long story short, she shoots carter 2 times and he mom once, that’s what we see. 3 bullets left… I believe in reality Lee actually killed carters wife, daughter, and then herself.
I left the theater with this interpretation and it absolutely had me satisfied and excited, even if it comes out to be a stretch or “wrong” I’m gonna continue to believe it😭

I think Harker in that moment was presented with a gift, ultimately a decision, the same decision the villain told harker she would have during the interrogation scene. I think its either she kills the girl, or she keeps the doll around and continues the work to keep the girl alive.

I agree with the idea that it wasn’t scary but unsettling. They made the movie off in a way. The dialogue was purposefully awkward and had lots of long pauses. Any time it introduces a concept it always makes something of it. The girl talked about her dad not wanting her to grow up, the mother also says that. The dolls all had a black veil and in the beginning scene they also had a black silhouette. That could be inferred to be the doll. The man the basement is always mentioned. And he was in the basement. The birthday party was mentioned and at the end it culminated at it. There were scenes that showed that long legs was not necessary evil or supernatural but simply corrupted and insane. Everything about it was specifically designed to be unsettling.

My biggest issue is i went in with the wrong idea of what this movie was even gonna be. After watching trailers i got the feeling that it was gonna be like long legs is some demon, not literally just some guy that yes has a supernatural aspect with being a satanist but at the end of the day is still just a guy. And with his bizarre appearance and behavior that we only got small glimpses of in those trailers the dude almost doesnt look human which drove this idea so deep in me that this is a catch the demon thing. I did not expect it to just be chasing this weird guy that worships satan. I thought this was gonna be a very different movie and was disappointed because i was drawn in so hard from the expectations the trailers gave me and got a different thing. Even with it ending up this way im not very impressed by the execution and think overall on practically every level whats here could have been done so much better. I think we got way too much of this extremely isolated "lets solve the puzzle and find the killer" and not nearly enough of the killings, impact of the killings on families/communities, the worlds general reaction to this killer being out there, etc. i think long legs should have been like an overbearing boogeyman to the world or atleast the area this takes place i think his killings were isolated to an area or something. But we didnt get any of that. It was extremely isolated to the main character and the fbi just solving the case like any other case out there. I think long legs needed to be bigger than that it feels underwhelming that he wasnt built up like this end all be all top priority of the FBI that puts an atmosphere of terror around anyone that knows he exists. I was mislead, underwhelmed, and overall just unimpressed by what i ended up getting. And its like the more i talk about it and the more i think about what it could have been and what i wanted it to be the more i hate it.

I see it more as a psychological thriller , in the vein of Silence of The Lambs or The Shining with Hitchcock like accents.

I think she only had “mind ability’s” lol I believe it was because she was infected by the doll. I mean she was under the trance of the doll the whole time movie right? Until
    her mom shoots it?

Great movie overall. Compared to other horrors of this decade its a 9/10 or a 10/10. Maybe even past 2 decades. Though it draws many techniques from earlier what film doesn't. It has an original premise that goes against the typical horror doll archetypes as the dolls are scary without having to actually be alive.

It started strong with the crime/thriller approach but went downhill when the supernatural was introduced.

I’m so conflicted on this movie. It’s no doubt good. I have no idea if it’s great or not

I thought her being psychic was actually part of the doll because it said it made her look where it wanted her to look
