Well, Bachmann has been getting their quality control up for a while now. I’ve bought a bunch of newer Bachmann products and compared them to some older Bachmanns from the 1980s and there’s a clear difference in quality. The newer Bachmanns have far better quality and performance than the older ones; drawbars that actually work, can-motors instead of the cheap pancake motors they used to use, better mechanisms, and far more detail. They also have upgraded their quality on freight and passenger cars too. They now all have metal wheels, and don’t look like they’re cheaper than Tyco.
Early bachmann train set Improvements include: 1. Replace all plastic wheels w/ metal ones. 2. swap out the motor with a coreless motor (where possible) . 3. replace locomotives or diesels Axle gears with some from Northwest Shortline (they make re-powering kits and good gear sets) or another good gear maker. 4. If draw bar is straight and doesn't connect well....Bend it upwards slightly with pliers or a table vise ,to improve connection. As an example ,I have repowered ALL of my early bachmann diesels with a self powered truck set called the "Stanton Drive" , by Northwest Shortline. They are sadly not cheap, but the quality is excellent and you get your monies worth. And they are easy as heck to install, as they only require one screw and nut to mount to a floor. If your diesels don't have a floor, you can make one simply out of cut styrene sheets, glued into the shells.
I have two 90s Bachmann 4 8 4s, cbq 5601 and ataf 3781. They look identical to yours other than the livery and the tender. I wonder of the three which one is actually prototypical.
The axles on the locomotive will break just a warning as it's a first generation locomotive, there are three generations of the overland limited set the first two are crap but the latest version is better.
Should be an easy enough fix: just make a couple of shallow bends in the drawbar with some needlenose pliers. It might have a bit of trouble with negotiating 18" radius curves after that, but the industry's been moving beyond those for quite a few years, now, anyway 🙄
@@spdaylight1 agreed. Of course, I work at Dollar Tree, and some of our store-brand stuff requires a few tweaks to work as intended. I think that it's mostly just an indication of the state of economy products :-/
I had one however is a easy fix just grab an extra bit of like a pipe cleaner, bend the bottom section of it, and make sure it’s the right length then when you put the tender on it, it should work fine just make sure to strip the pipe cleaner in the area where the rod connects
what are your thoughts on Lionel's HO sets? because from what i've seen online, their quality has been a mixed bag at best, and inconsistent at worst. Just ask Sam's Trains across the pond.
At least 3 the one this guy has is from the 80's and 90's witch are the bad ones with split axles and split chassis, the newer versions are much better as I have the newer one and its a good runner, also i think the canada version might be super rare cause i find nothing on it when I Google anything about it
Me, I'd be altering the drawbar or putting a little cotter pin on the bottom to keep everything hooked up. Nothing that can't be put right with a little work, eh?
I had the overland limited as a kid back when it first came out in the early 2000s but i dont remember it being able to smoke and i dont remember ever having any as a kid that did. Is my old age (lol im 35) getting the better or me or did later releases get that feature added to the locomotive?
The only bachmann product I still buy these days is EZ track because I live with a roommate and my layout has to be disassemble-able for when I move out. I would be using kato unitrack but some of my old rivarossi locomotives like my big boy and challenger have large flanges that needs code 100 track to run properly
A steam loco hauling cars from the modern era ? Yikes. I have two versions of the CN reefer car and the older one, from the 80's looks better than the one in this set. The newer one in the same livery also looks better and not as shiny as the one in the vid. Bachmann has improved somewhat with some pretty decent models out now compared to the 80s. My first set was a Bachmann that featured a CN f-unit, the cn reefer car, a CN gondola and a CN caboose. The paint jobs featured a matt finish with a slight shine compared to the set above. The loco though ran like crap after a few years but it was decent enough untill i could get better locos.
I have two bachmann sets from the mid/early 2010's, and the cars aren't that bad. But the cars here, I can see how terrible they are. Bachmann must really be letting go of quality lately.
@@gamerfan8445 That new bachmann hudson is Peak bachmann, one of the best locos i have, and best steam puller in my fleet, with an older bachmann atsf 4-8-4 northern on par with it, (it was a rare find), since i havent been able to pierce the $350.00 mark of model trains, these Bachmann engines have come in clutch!

There were a few Bachmanns from the 80s that had can motors, such as when they reproduced AHM's GP18 high hoods
@@Benthetrainkid I’m well aware of those. I used to have one.
I loved how they used an ATSF 3751 class engine for the locomotive and gave it a random tender.
*ATSF 2900 class
Iirc it's just a better and repainted version of the original Bachmann Overland from the 80s
@@Jeisr4207-bc5ui2900 class has the raising stack, this doesn’t.
@@eliyahtherailfanner131 That’s because it uses a different mold

Small problem, they gave it the number of a U-1-A, not even the same wheel arrangement!
Hey look! it's a Tyco set........ wait it's not?
I hate Bachmann crap, I won't even try fixing it if it breaks I'll just toss it out, I'll fix an Athearn any day
You sounded like my uncle in the first bit

Great presentation of the Bachmann Train set🚂🚂
Many thanks!

While it is a simple fix for a consumer. Its still sad to see that bachmann did not fix it from factory.

I just bend the drawbar. Most Bachmann steamers, even newer ones, have this issue
@@MikesAutoWorld that works too lol
To be honest that is a simple fix but a fix I would rather not have to make. I’d just make a longer pin.
Waiting on a company to make an affordable accurately tooled u2g (its never going to happen)
I under stand it should run perfect out the box but hear me out, bend the metal draw bar up a little

How many different versions of the overland limited did Bachmann release?

from what I know. the 1980s-1990s ones had smoke. when they switched to the Niagara model it lost it. but now its back.

I keep wantimg to switch to kato but that would cost an awful lot. Plus i dont like to run my trains on the floor.
if the drawbar is metal I would bend it to a better hight and to me the tender is to far apart from the loco.

Maybe bend the drawbar so it’s higher
I have tyco Bachman atlas and I enjoy running all of them

Is this even a real train set from Bachmann cause I can’t find it anywhere
Bachmann discontinued and the redid this set
@@trainboy7812 oh cause this looks honestly better then original overland limited
Buy Broadway Limited and be free from Bachman's curse.
That “u2g” is just an ATSF 2900 class?
The Union Pacific version is a Niagara
*fraud* 😳
Correct. Repainted and retendered
That’s the only reason I want that “U2G” just cuz it’s a 2900
The Canadian version of the overland limited train set might be worth something cause it rare, will this comment get auto deleted who knows.
rare does not mean valuable. nice display engine though
It's Bachmann, It's junk.
The train sets yeah. Mainly because they use older models. Meanwhile they make amazing new models. And my evidence, look at their new Hudson.
