All bases are covered with this overview of issues one can experience with a Neo Geo CD malfunctioning. Loved this thorough look at the issues and solutions man. I'm sure at some point my old Neo CD will fail on me, and I know exactly which video to turn to for help. Great explanation as always Luke!

Thanks Luke, My 20 year old Sony PLC-107 is having problems playing CD's and after watching your video I suspect it just needs the rails lubricated and a thorough cleaning. A lot of good useful info in a short, to the point presentation. Just the way we like it!

I have an old JVC system that could not read discs.

Just received my "broken" NGCD today and it turns out it was a super simple fix. I looked into all the issues you pointed out but it didn't address an issue I was having with the spindle not spinning when the laser head assembly was in the home position. I thought it was some sort of a brake but it wasn't. It turns out the spindle plate was pushed in too far and was hitting the head assembly, plus the CD wasn't actually sitting on the plate. Just popped the cover off, pushed the plate back up and voila, fully working system again. I appreciate your video as I did the regrease and cleaning and gave me more places to check. Just glad I didn't fully take it apart to replace the laser.

Thank you. I dropped mine and was skeptical I could revive it. I tried the q-tip+alcohol, and tried to remove the back panel. One screw wouldn't come out, so I gave up, and now it works. :D Not sure which part got Humpty Dumpty back together but I am glad not to landfill more electronics.

Good video lukemorse! Only one thing I could think to add, which had happened to me and took a while to figure out.
Over time, the spindle in the middle of the console will sink due to the weight on it, or shipping may mess it up, like in my case. But what you do, is take the whole CD reading assembly out and take off the black plastic cover. Then holding and pushing the motor shaft down, pull up pretty hard on the spindle. It will come off. Make sure the motor still spins freely, and here is the tricky part. Put the black plastic piece back on it and *VERY CAREFULLY BUT FORCEFULLY* as it does not go on back easily, put the spindle back on. You want the gap between the big flat bottom part of the spindle and the surface of the black plastic piece to be about 1-2MM above the plastic piece. Then reinstall and go play you some King of Fighters!

that one latch is a interlock switch a safety feature, it shuts off the power to the laser. This is to prevent someone from looking directly down at the lens and hurting their eyes.

Hey! Thanks so much for your videos that have been helping me diagnose and repair a Neo GEO CD that I picked up recently. When I got it it would not turn on and had no video and sound. I replaced the capacitors on the controller board and the power / video board as well as a couple inductors based on one of your videos which seems to have fixed the video problems. With one small exception. For some reason the RGB out seems to be missing green. Composite looks great.
Also, I have a problem where the Neo Geo is "always on" you plug it in and the LED light turns on immediately. pressing the power button seems to just turn the "video off and on" if that makes any sense. Like the system is not turning off...just the video is no longer displayed...very strange. You ever run into that?
Once if figure that out, the next step will be to get the CD drive working...
Anyway, thanks for the great videos, they have been very helpful!

  • @MichaelAllard

There is another trick that might not make a whole lot of sense but can sometimes work. If a disc refuses to spin the solution might be a simple cleaning job. My Original PlayStation and Dreamcast I have now had the issue I am about to share. And I fixed many disc-based consoles before during the 1990's with similar issues using this method. Saturn consoles are especially prone to this issue. I can't remember how many of those I have had to work on where the disc wouldn't spin.
Overtime, repeated use, or lack of use, can cause a build up on the motor's brushes and actuator. This build up will keep electricity from flowing from the brushes to the actuator contacts, thus keeping the motor from spinning properly or at all.
If you can find brush cleaners, commonly found in hobby stores that sell the high-end radio controlled vehicles, you can use that but avoid spraying it on anything plastic as it might eat it away. Otherwise put some rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle and spray the back side of the motor. The idea is to get the alcohol/cleaner inside the motor. Then give it a spin manually. Tap the bottom of the motor on some kind of cloth or paper towel and repeat the process one more time. Reconnect everything and give it a test run with a disc on the spindle.
That tip has helped me in saving a few game consoles from the trash or needing replacement drives. It doesn't work on brushless motor systems, though, only on motors with brushes. I hope this helps. If it does I would like to hear about it.

      @DavideNastri 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting take.
My neo geo cd refuses to spin but in my case I tried feeding voltage directly to the motor and it spins...
Then I guess this cleaning procedure shouldn't apply, right?

Thanks..my boom box lid had a pin that no longer reached the switch..gluing on a short extension did the trick..who knew?? and, as you mentioned , especially Denon uses ribbons with aluminum contacts. These compress and corrode over time. I lightly scrape the contacts and apply WD40. Good for another 10 years.

    Hello there!
I have two neo geo cds, one of the two is perfectly working an the other one won't spin its cd.
I tried many of the solutions you suggested (the mechanical issue, flat cable, oxidation etc) and after lubing the rails the cd head finally started moving.
If I put it on the top it rans in the opposite direction and stops there but sadly the cd keeps not spinning.
So I provided to the spinning motor 3v, only to check if it was alive or not and...
It started spinning without any issue!
I also tried mixing and matching parts from the good unit and it seems that both motherboard of the neo geo and the little motherboard of the cdrom are fine.
The culprit seems to be in the laser / motors area.
What can I try before buying a "new" laser?
Thanks for your help and great video!

great video Luke, I just purchased my neo geo cd top loader, and the issue i am having is the disc motor will continuously spin once i power the system on and will not stop unless it is powered off. I am assuming this is abnormal, but have not found anything online about this issue. Have you come across this issue before, or do you have any insight on how to remedy the problem. I can see the lens emitting a red laser when its powered on.

That's basically all i found out over the years, too. If your'e taking care of your systems before they don't do anything anymore, you might be lucky like me and never need a new diskdrive again.
On Pc/Xbox drives i found one more problem. Over the disc tray is a small magnetic disc located, you can see the locked version without a magnet in lukes neo geo cd.
Its holding down on the cd to prevent it to vibrate or get loose.
In normal PCish drives its just sticking on the top of the drive by its own magnetic force, it will come down to the tray when the tray gets lifted up a bit or so.
If this does not happen, the disc won't rotate correctly and the laser can't read properly. The drive will spin up and down and the laser will go nuts, that you can hear it adjust all the time.
Get a magnet and magnetize this supportdisc and get some grase and put it on the lifting mechanism, that should fix it.
If it does not help at all and you want to finish your game that night, you can leave your Xbox open or your Pc drive loose in the tray, so you can press gently into the middle of the drive after you closed it. You don't need to do that again untill you change the disc.
