  • Doing things your own way can be both risky and rewarding, depending on the context and your approach. Here are some considerations for each:
    *Rewards:*
    1. *Innovation and Creativity:* When you do things your own way, you have the freedom to innovate and think creatively. This can lead to unique solutions, products, or ideas that stand out in the market.
    2. *Personal Satisfaction:* Following your own path can bring a deep sense of personal satisfaction and fulfillment. It allows you to align your actions with your values and interests, fostering a strong sense of purpose.
    3. *Learning and Growth:* Taking unconventional routes often involves learning through trial and error. This continuous learning and adaptation can lead to personal growth and development of new skills.
    4. *Differentiation:* In competitive fields, doing things differently can differentiate you from others. This uniqueness can attract attention and opportunities that might not be available through traditional methods.
    5. *Potential for Greater Rewards:* If your unconventional approach succeeds, the rewards can be significant. This might include financial gains, recognition, or the satisfaction of achieving something impactful.
    *Risks:*
    1. *Failure and Setbacks:* Deviating from established norms carries the risk of failure. Your approach may not work as expected, leading to setbacks, financial loss, or damage to your reputation.
    2. *Resistance and Criticism:* People may resist or criticize your unconventional methods, especially if they challenge established practices or beliefs. This can create barriers to acceptance or adoption of your ideas.
    3. *Isolation:* Going against the grain might lead to isolation from mainstream groups or communities. This could limit your access to resources, support networks, or collaborative opportunities.
    4. *Uncertainty:* Non-traditional approaches often involve greater uncertainty. You may encounter unexpected challenges, market changes, or regulatory issues that are harder to predict or manage.
    5. *Longer Path to Success:* It can take longer to gain traction and prove the effectiveness of your approach compared to established methods. This requires patience, perseverance, and a willingness to endure setbacks.
In summary, while doing things your own way can lead to innovation, personal satisfaction, and differentiation, it also involves risks such as failure, criticism, and uncertainty. Success often requires a balance of creativity, resilience, and strategic thinking to navigate these challenges effectively.

I hope so! Hahaha. My biggest fear is to live with the thought that I didn't enjoy my time on the kit!

Thanks for the vid. Any advice for a newer drummer trying to get my foot in the door of paid work? My skill level isn't great, but I'm learning and feel like I need experience performing to understand how and what to improve on.

Great stuff Phil. A lot of the stuff that you talk about here is highly applicable to any walk of life, i.e. Wisdom. I'm a bricklayer by trade and I stay outside the system, by choice. I'm tied down with a wife and kids but I endeavor to live by my responsibilities and embrace the choices that I have made, good or bad. All the while I try to be the best drummer that I can be because I love drumming and music. I get paid for it sometimes too. I'm glad I listened to you say these things this morning.
